History of Harbin

In 1115 AD, the leader of the Jurchen people established the Jin Dynasty and set the capital in Huining Prefecture, Shangjing. Its ruins are in today’s Acheng District in Harbin. Since late 2024, Harbin Taiping International Airport has launched a 240-hour transit visa-free policy for visitors, which allows visitors to stay in Harbin no more than 240 hours(10 days). Visas are not required for people who come from the 54 countries, hold valid international travel documents and international flight tickets with confirmed dates and seats to a third country (region).

Another policy is the bilateral visa-free policy for Russia. For Russian tourists who come to China for business, tourism, visiting relatives and friends, exchange visits or transits and stay in China less than 30 days, they can enter China with their passport. The validity period for this policy is from Sep. 15, 2025 to Sep. 14, 2026.

Getting to Harbin

By air: Harbin Taiping International Airport operates both domestic and international air routes to most major cities. Airport bus (CNY 20), taxi and online-hailing car (CNY 120) are all equipped. And the airport bus will operate until the last flight of the day. Bus line 3 can take you to Central Street directly.

By train: There are two major train stations in Harbin. Harbin Train Station is in city center and can be reached by metro line 2. West Train Station mainly runs high-speed trains. Metro line 3 has set a station there. East Train Station and North Train Station are not frequented by travelers, but if you arrive there, metro line 1 and 3 can take you to city center, respectively.

Getting Around Harbin

Getting around the city is also easy. The metro system is highly developed, and it’s always clean and heated/cooled. Most major attractions and business circles are all covered.   • Usually, the queuing time in Ice and Snow World is relatively long. We remembered that the hot projects even need to wait in line for about 2 hours, so arrive there as early as possible.
  • If you are interested in the night views of Ice and Snow World, entering between 15:00 – 16:00 is an ideal time. Illuminated by the lights, the ice sculptures are more charming.
  • When travelling to Harbin in winter, keeping warm is the main principle, especially for your hands and feet. But the indoor area is equipped with heating, so it is very warm.
  • About the places to live, we recommend the area near Central Street to every tourist for its convenience.
  • Central Street, St. Sophia Cathedral, Zhaolin Park and Chinese Baroque Historical and Cultural District are all very close to each other, it is recommended to include them in one day.
