Essential Travel Information

  • Location: No. 200-1, Taikang Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, nestled within the charming streets of the Former French Concession.
  • Chinese Name: ē”°ååŠ
  • Opening Hours: Tianzifang is open daily, with shops and restaurants typically open from 10 AM to 10 PM. However, individual establishments may have slightly different operating hours.
  • Recommended Visit Time: The best time to visit Tianzifang is in the afternoon through evening when the area comes alive with locals and tourists bringing laughter and warmth. The area is especially charming at night when the street lights create an atmosphere reminiscent of that in Spirited Away, and you can enjoy shopping, dining, and live music.
  • Time Needed: Expect for 2 hours to discover every corner of it. And we suggest visiting twice to fully explore its day and night versions.

The Origin of Tianzifang

Tianzifang’sĀ (ē”°ååŠ) history began in 1930s. This block was originally built under the Former French Concession as a shikumen (ēŸ³åŗ“é—Ø) residential-lane neighborhood. Over time, small factories also came operated here,Ā as theĀ alleyways and the district’s proximity to transportĀ can really benefit their business.

In the late 1990s, as industrial use declined,Ā its role had gradually changed.Ā ArtistsĀ recognized the hidden potential of manufacturing andĀ they began convertingĀ the disused workshops into art studios. By 2001, the area was officially rebranded as ā€œTianzifang,ā€ and thisĀ name was inspired by an artist’s name, Tian ZifangĀ (田子方). And this is designed to connectĀ the modern creative quarter with China’s artistic heritage.

Why Visit Tianzifang?

Tianzifang is much more than just a shopping district. Stepping onto the stone-paved paths, you walk into a street of Shanghai’s shikumen (stone-gate) architectureĀ and alleyway(弄堂)Ā culture: tangled electrical poles and stylish art walls, laundry hanging on balconies and exquisite cafĆ©s, childhood snack shops and elegant qipao boutiques — everywhere, you find the collision of Eastern and Western cultures, the interweaving of old and new times, such a striking contrast.

When night falls, the neon lights and lanterns weave a warm aura that quietly invite you in. Through those winding lanes and Ā sparkling window glass, reflected colors and lights flow like river of stars. Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a food lover, or simply want to enjoy the laidback yet lively atmosphere, Tianzifang offers something for everyone.

What to See & Do in Tianzifang

  1. Ā Art Galleries and Workshops: Tianzifang is home to many small galleries and museums, like Shanghai Museum of Glass Art. These spaces often host exhibitions of contemporary art. You still can visit Chen Yifei’s Former Studiofor free, where the spirit of Tianzifang can be found untouched. Many independent artists have chosen to site their workshop here. If you’re an art lover, don’t miss the chance to join these free minds!
  2. Shopping: Tianzifang’s narrow lanes are filled with boutique shops offering handmade crafts, vintage items, and unique souvenirs. We particularly recommend you to visit Deng’s Paper-Cut Store, where you can discover exquisite paper cuts that showcase true craftsmanship. You can find everything from traditional Chinese ceramics to trendy fashion items and quirky, locally designed accessories. But always mind to distinguish their authenticity!
  3. Ā Food and Drink: Tianzifang is also famous for its diverse food offerings. From local Shanghainese dishes, cocktail bars to international cuisines, you have so many options to explore. Don’t miss out on some delicious dim sum, dumplings, or a local noodle dish at one of the many eateries. We will come back to this in detail shortly.
  4. Ā Join the Vibe: Tianzifang is soaked in a nostalgic atmosphere. Here, time slows down. You hear the echos from different cultures and the place calls for Dejavu. From nowhere, a gramophone plays softly. Behind the shop window, an old leather suitcase sits by the wall, and inside a tin box overflowing with postcards, a single rose petal lies hidden. You are allowed to build your personal memory here. Take some photos and celebrate a past that never truly fades.

Discovering the Real Tianzifang with our local guides

Most tourists regard Tianzifang as a bustling commercial district, while we’d like to say they may have only wandered along the main street and neglected its real essence, the side lanes. In fact, Tianzifang is like a maze and consists of both the main street and several main lanes: Lane 210, Lane 248 and Lane 274. These lanes are of great differences from the main street and each lane has its own features. Follow us to discover the real Tianzifang.

  • Lane 210: we highly recommend this lane to art lovers and foodies. The Painter’s Building, Maolong Restaurant and Blan Bunny Teahouse are all here. Inside the Painter’s Building, there are often niche art exhibitions that are open to the public for free. Sometimes, we also encounter painters creating on the spot.
  • Lane 248:Ā if you are interested in the authentic local life, we think this lane is your best choice. After entering this lane, we feel a strong life atmosphere. More locals pass us by and we hear them chatting with each other in the local dialect. More affordable delicacies also gather here. Above our heads, there are even clothes hanging out by the residents living here.
  • Lane 274:Ā this lane is perfect for tourists who want to try exotic cuisine. Indian, Thai and Italian restaurants are clustered here. We also find some handmade workshops hidden in this lane. How about spending just CNY 50 making a special ceramic cup for yourself?

Delicacies Within & Near Tianzifang

We have selected some of the most popular and highly reputable spots to indulge in local delicacies. Whether you’re looking for a cozy bar or a taste of tradition, Tianzifang offers countless options. If you’d like to visit them, simply search for their names on your map.

Antique Garden CafƩ

For 13 years, Antique GardenĀ has stood as a nostalgic retreat on Sinan Road, just 15-minute walk from Tianzifang.Ā This is the place to spend high-quality time alone, also a good choice for unforgettable dates. It is frequently used as a filming location for dramas like Blossoms ShanghaiĀ and My Best Friend’s Story. Even celebrities have been drawn to its vintage allure.

It opens 11:00-02:00. By day, it serves artisanal coffee and light bites; by night, it transforms into a stylish bar with occasional magic performances. Whether sipping coffee under stained glass lamps or unwinding with a cocktail at Antique Bar, one feels enveloped in the timeless romance of old Shanghai.

Weixiangzhai 味香斋

The WeixiangzhaiĀ near Tianzifang has been awarded Michelin recognition for four consecutive years. Sesame Sauce NoodlesĀ isĀ their signature dish! Absolutely delicious. But make sure to mix the sauce well—this is a five-minute mixing job and a one-minute eating experience! The sauce has the perfect consistency—not too thick or watery, just enough to coat every strand of noodle. (PS: If you struggle to mix it well, try adding a spoonful of their beef soup—it makes the blending much easier!)

Bai Yulan BakeryĀ ē™½ēŽ‰å…°ē”œē‚¹

ThisĀ is a time-honored brand, well-known between Shanghai grandparents’ generations. It has now gained its reputation between younger generations for its giant meat buns and nostalgic pastries—a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic local taste.

Where the Locals Eat: Authentic & Affordable Dining Guides

Also, the unmissable delicious food in Tianzifang is hidden in the lanes instead of the popular snacks on the main street. The following restaurants we recommend are frequented by the locals with an authentic flavor and an affordable price.

Shanghai Traditional Tofu Soup: this store offers both sweet tofu with brown sugar and crushed peanuts and salty tofu with pickle, dried shrimp and soy sauce. We advise ordering both of them to experience a completely different taste.

Maolong Restaurant: we’d like to say this restaurant is the pinnacle of Shanghai cuisine. Here, you can fill your stomach for only CNY 60 per person. Braised pork in brown sauce and fried shrimp are the must-try signature dishes.

Lotus Land Restaurant: a paradise for Indian cuisine lovers. The chicken skewers are baked Tandoor and taste crispy outside and tender within. Pairing it with mint sauce will make you feel like in New Delhi. Another combination we recommend is to order the white curry crab and dip the naan in the curry sauce.

What to Buy and Avoid at Tianzifang

For foreign tourists, how to purchase the local souvenirs is always a problem. Don’t worry. We will recommend you some special gifts we discovered in Tianzifang, rather than those on the main street. Also, we will include the souvenirs that should be avoided.

What to Buy

  • Nostalgic localĀ products: Shanghai vanishing cream, Shanghai watch, paper pan, available in the Old Shanghai Store in Lane 248.
  • Creative handmade gifts: in the pottery studio and pen repair shop in Lane 210, you can customize an engraved ceramic cup or vintage pen.
  • Food: buy some pastries in the time-honored pastry store in Lane 248, such as butterfly cookies, which are fresh and delicious. They also provide vacuum packages, very convenient for tourists.

What to Avoid

  • Expensive ā€œspecialtiesā€: the pear-syrup candy and spiced beans sold on the main street are mostly produced by other places. If you want to try it, there are time-honored brands in the nearby Sun Moon Light Center.
  • Cultural and creative ornaments:Ā the key chains and fridge magnets printed with Tianzifang. We find that the price there is as high as CNY 30, but it is CNY 10 for three on an online shopping platform. It is really not worth the price.
  • Bulk tea/spices: without the place of origin and shelf life, they are likely old stocks. Blan Bunny Teahouse offers packaged tea and the quality can be guaranteed.
