History about Songzanlin Monastery

In the early Qing Dynasty, to govern the southwestern frontier, the emperor Kangxi ordered the building of the monastery. The 5th Dalai LamaĀ conducted a divination, determined the site and started to construct in 1679. Since its completion in 1681, it became the political and religious center of the junction area of Yunnan, Sichuan and Xizang.

In the 1950s, the feudal privileges of the monastery were abolished and the democratic management was implemented. In the 1970s, the scriptures were burned, the Buddha statues were destroyed and the buildings were severely damaged due to the Great Cultural Revolution. In the 1980s, it was reconstructed with the support of the country and believers.
