When Is the Best Time to Visit the Great Wall of China?

While you can visit the Great Wall of China any time, some times are definitely better than others. In general, the best times to visit the Great Wall of ChinaĀ are spring or autumn, and more specifically the months of April, May, September, and October.

Not only do those months offer the best scenery, with beautiful budding flowers in the spring and colourful leaves in autumn, they also offer the most comfortable experience for hikers. Summer in Beijing tends to be quite hot and humid, not to mention that many domestic tourists visit the Great Wall during their summer break, which can make hiking rather taxing. Winter, on the other hand, is not just uncomfortably cold, snow can also make the Great Wall slippery and dangerous for hikers. That’s why it’s best to plan your trip during spring or autumn if at all possible.

Spring (March–May): Gentle Weather and Beautiful Spring Flowers

Weather

As a transition season, spring can be a bit unpredictable. The weather on the Great Wall fluctuates a lot during this scene, with average lows of 31°F at night in March and average highs of almost 80°F during the day in May. Still, the weather is fairly pleasant for hiking, and even if it weren’t the views are absolutely worth it.

Scenery

On different parts of the Wall, you might see cherry blossoms, peach blossoms, wild flowers, and more, making for a beautiful view of the budding life of spring.

What to Pack

If you plan to travel during this time, it’s a good idea to bring clothes you can layer, like light t-shirts, jackets, and sweaters. Don’t forget your camera either, so you can take pictures of all the beautiful views. Those with allergies might also consider bringing antihistamines. It’s best to check the pollen and weather forecast before you go, and we also recommend avoiding public holidays like Tomb Sweeping Day and Labour Day for a more peaceful experience.

In general, spring on the Great Wall suits people who love flowers and fresh spring weather.

Summer (June–August): Punishing Heat and Verdant Forests

Weather

Summer on the Great Wall of China can be uncomfortably hot for some travellers, with the highest average high being almost 90°F in July, though the average lows are more comfortable, getting down to 65°F in June. Additionally, this season sees the most rain, typically in the form of storms or heavy downpours, and even when it isn’t raining, it can be quite humid.

What to Pack

If you plan to travel during this time, light clothes are a must, though you should still wear appropriate hiking boots rather than sandals. Additionally, it’s important to bring lots of water and sunscreen. Having a hat to shield you from the sun and a raincoat in case of any sudden storms is also a good idea, as is insect repellant as this season has more mosquitos than the others.

Scenery

Summer on the Great Wall sees more tourists than the others due to the summer holidays, so be prepared for large crowds. It’s best to avoid holidays like the Dragon Boat Festival for a bit more of a peaceful visit. Visiting in the early morning is also a good idea to avoid the heat.

Summer is a good time to visit the Great Wall of China for visitors who don’t mind the heat, humidity, and crowds and who are looking for a chance to see the Wall’s lush greenery at its peak.

Autumn (September–November): Pleasant Weather and Stunning Colours

Weather

Most would say that autumn is the best time to visit the Great Wall of China. The weather at this time of year is similar to that of spring, with average highs between 50°F and 80°F and broadly comfortable average lows, though by November the temperature can start to drip below freezing.

What to Pack

If you’re travelling during this season, we’d recommend bringing clothes that are easy to layer. If you’re travelling in September, a short-sleeved t-shirt with a light jacket might suffice, but by the time November rolls around, it’s better to pack long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, and thicker jackets. It’s also another great time to snap photos, so be sure to bring your camera with you.

Scenery

This time of year offers a view of brilliant, multicoloured fall leaves, giving the Great Wall a serene, slightly magical appearance. Some sections are covered with red leaves and some sections are dressed in various colors from the mountain top to foot. All the sections are full of vitality.

The only downside to this season is the large number of holidays it has. While the Great Wall of China is generally quieter in autumn and doesn’t see too many tourists, it’s important to avoid late September and early October as the Mid-Autumn Festival and Golden Week cause an increase in travellers.

All in all, autumn is the perfect time to visit the Great Wall thanks to its pleasant weather and spectacular autumn colours, making it perfect for hikers and photographers alike.

Winter (December–February): Chilly Weather and Stark Beauty

Weather

Winter is a complicated season on the Great Wall. On the one hand, you get to see the winter landscape, as desolate as it is beautiful. On the other hand, the weather at this time of year can be extremely cold. During these three months, the average high doesn’t break 40°F and is often accompanied by dry winds. Additionally, while the occasional snowstorms lend a dreamy air to the scenery, they also make the Wall slippery and more dangerous for hikers.

What to Pack

If you’re visiting the Great Wall during winter, it’s extremely important that you bring warm clothes like sweaters, down jackets, scarves, and hats. It’s also important to make sure your hiking boots have good grip, especially if there’s likely to be snow. Additionally, those with dry and sensitive skin should be sure to pack face and hand cream as well as lip balm in order to prevent chapping.

Scenery

As the off-season of the year, winter is the time with the least tourists. A stark and solemn beauty is presented on the Great Wall. The most beautiful time is after a snow, when the Great Wall is covered with heavy white snow, like a silver dragon lying among the continuous mountains.

There are two major holidays you’ll want to avoid in winter, New Year and the Spring Festival, as there tend to be more tourists hiking the Great Wall during those times.

As much as it might sound like winter is a less-than-ideal time to visit the Great Wall, the chilly beauty of the landscape makes it worth it – not to mention that there are skiing opportunities nearby, making it a surprisingly good choice for adventure seekers and experienced hikers.

Worst Times to Visit the Great Wall

Okay, so now you know the bestĀ times to visit the Great Wall of China, but what about the worst? Well, broadly speaking, it’s like we said above: it’s best to avoid major holidays, and weekends are also less than ideal times to visit. While each season has something nice to offer, it’s much harder to enjoy the Great Wall of China when it’s swamped with tourists. In general, the absolute worst times to visit are Golden Week and during the Chinese summer holidays, since these are longer holidays during which people are less likely to go to their hometowns and more likely to go on a trip for fun, leading to some crowding on the Great Wall.
