When talking about the greatest wonders made in the modern world, the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge’s name (HZMB) has never been off the spot. It is the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world, spanning the beautiful Lingdingyang waters of the Pearl River Estuary. It consists of three navigable bridges, one undersea tunnel, two artificial islands, and the land roads. Together, the bridge made Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macao ever closer to each other.
The bridge was opened on October 24, 2018. Since that day, people’s journey between Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Macau has become even more efficient. In the past, if you wanted to travel from Hong Kong to Zhuhai, then it would take probably three hours. Now it only needs 30–40 minutes to complete this ride.

Three Prominent Engineering Marvels & Innovations of HKZM
The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge is widely recognized as a modern engineering wonder. It earns such a title for for its massive scale, advanced technologies, and groundbreaking construction methods. And it can be said that the whole project has made major breakthroughs in all these sectors.
- The bridgehas a designed service life of 120 years. Furthermore, it has been given a capacity to withstand magnitude-8 earthquakes and level-16 typhoons. For example, during Typhoon Mangkhut, wind speeds on the bridge once reached about 55 m/s, yet the structure remained stable.
- One of the most important innovations of the HZM bridge is the seismic isolation system. Engineers installed flexible isolation bearings between the bridge piers and the deck. This designallows the structure to absorb and reduce earthquake forces to roughly one-quarter of those experienced by conventional bridges.
- Another highlight is the 6.7-km immersed tube tunnel, and it’s stillthe longest of its kind in the world. It is built from 33 giant prefabricated concrete sections. There are six lanes of traffic and it allows vehicles to travel beneath the sea at speeds of up to 90 km/h. The underwater journey can be quite an interesting and new experience, which can be completed in about seven minutes.

How to Travel across the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge
After knowing how to get to the ports, now we’ll be looking at how to travel across the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB) to reach another city.
Travel between Hong Kong and Macau via HZMB

For most travelers, you can choose either private cross-border cars or public buses to travel between Hong Kong Port and Macau Port/Zhuhai Port.
There are three kinds of buses that travel between Hong Kong and Macau:
- the HZMB shuttle bus
- the ONE Bus (Hong Kong-Macau No.1)
- the HK-Macau Express
All of them will travel along the Hong Kong-Macau Bridge.
HZMB Shuttle Bus (穿梭巴士)
This is the most convenient and cost-effective choice. Buses operate directly between HZMB Hong Kong Port and HZMB Macau Port. No stops are included in the journey.
One good thing about this option is that it runs 24 hours, and it’s really reliable for those who need to go to Hong Kong International Airport late at nights.
Once you buy a ticket, you’ll have to use it within one hour. But don’t worry too much about timing, buses depart very frequently. Once a bus is full, it leaves immediately. And if you miss that bus, the staff will guide you to the next available bus if needed.

Travel Between Macau and Zhuahai
There’s no shuttle bus that goes between Macau and Zhuhai via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, since the two cities’ ports are so close to each other that you only need a 15-30 minute walk to cross the border.
If you are traveling from Zhuhai, you’ll still need to arrive at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge port first. Then you need to go to the ZhuhaI-Macau Departure Hall, and after a short walk, you’ll be arriving at Macau. This hall only opens from 8:00 to 22:00.
Private Cross-border Car Service (Charter)
If convenience and comfort are your priority, then the public transportation listed above may not suit you the most. So consider a more private door-to-door service, and this is also the most friendly choice for those traveling with children or a lot of luggage. Charter service will get you picked up from your stay in Zhuhai or Macau and directly dropped off at your next destination, which could be a hotel, airport, or other travel destinations.
Passengers usually need to get off at the mainland port to complete immigration procedures, then continue the trip after re-boarding the vehicle. Most services operate 24 hours a day and use comfortable MPVs, making ideal and flexible travel schedules.
Prices may vary a lot, and it depends on the vehicle and number of passengers you have. Shared rides typically cost around HKD 200–300 per person. If you want a chartered 7-seat private car by yourself, it usually costs about HKD 1,600–2,000 per trip. Popular routes include Zhuhai to Hong Kong Airport, Hong Kong Disneyland, and downtown areas like Tsim Sha Tsui, with travel time usually around 1.5 hours.
Remember to only book such services with formal companies with qualification certificates. You can see the names of such companies on the Hong Kong Transportation Department’s website.
Private & Cross-Border Cars Tips
If you want to do a self-drive visit, there are a lot of things to prepare, and the whole process can take a really long time. Thus, this option is not the most friendly to foreign travelers.
- Private cars (non-cross-border): Most private cars may only access the port’s parking lots for drop-off/pick-up. If you want to drive across the HZMB, both you and your car will need special licenses.
- Cross-border cars: Only vehicles with valid cross-border license plates (FV, Hong Kong, Macau,粤Z plates) and registered cross-border drivers are permitted to travel across the bridge. Additional requirements include a valid cross-border driving license, a vehicle clearance card, and dual-region insurance coverage. Please see the official website for a detailed requirement list.
- Toll & capacity: A one-way crossing toll costsCNY 150. Each vehicle has a maximum capacity of 6 passengers (including infants). And before your trip, you have to make an advance booking (7–14 days) via authorized agencies due to strict daily quotas.
- Parking at Hong Kong Port: On-site parking is available at P1 (HKD 100/day) and P2 (HKD 60/day) lots.Permit holders can have 24-hour access.
Travel Tips and Warm Reminders
- Luggage allowance(shuttle bus): Each passenger can take only one piece of luggage (max 20 kg, size ≤76×51×32 cm).
- Nighttime travel: If you’re traveling late at night and don’t want a private car transfer, then it’s better to take the official Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge shuttle bus. It’s more reliable in most respects. It has multiple schedules and your safety is guaranteed.
- Language Support: Usually, staff at ports and on buses speak Cantonese, Mandarin, and basic English, so don’t worry too much about language barriers. Use translation apps if needed.
- Weather Impact:If your journey meets bad or even extreme weather (typhoon, heavy rain), the shuttle bus service may be delayed or suspended. There will be real-time updates on the official WeChat Mini Program.
- Visa Requirements: Hong Kong, Macau, and the mainland of China each have different visa requirements. It’s better to check the details before making your plan. Please see: China Travel Entry Requirements 2026: The Complete Guide and Latest Updates.
- Process to cross the border:
If you’re traveling from Hong Kong, just follow the visitor passage to the Passenger Clearance Building (Departure Hall). Complete the border check there by simply presenting your passport and visas to both sides if needed.
If you’re traveling from Macau or Zhuhai, the process is basically the same. Your border check will be finished just after you enter the building, and it won’t cost you too much time.

Best Ways to View & Take Photos of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge
- From the Water
If you just want to visit the bridge without crossing the border to reach another city, then you can simply take a bridge tour from Zhuhai. This tour offers a close-up view of the bridge and its sea-level curves. There will also be a guide explaining the construction highlights to you along the way.
- Operating hours: 09:00–16:30(last departure 16:30)
- Price: Adult ¥188, Student/Senior ¥128, Child/Disabled ¥99
- Tip: Sit on the right side of the boat for the best photos.
