Why is Wudang Mountain Famous?

A Holy Taoist Land Honored by the Emperors:

Wudang Mountain is the source of Chinese Taoist beliefs. It has been known as the ā€œImperial Ancestral Templeā€. The main shrine of the Emperor Zhenwu, in particular, was revered by emperors of the Ming and Qing dynastiesĀ and held supreme religious status.

An Architectural Miracle Representing the Harmony between Heaven and Humanity

The large-scale building complex preserved from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644 AD) is listed among the World Cultural Heritage. It followed and accommodated the terrain and embodied the Taoist idea of the harmony between heaven and humanity. It serves as a good example of blending architectural artsĀ into nature.

A Fountain of Traditional Chinese Kung Fu (Internal Martial Arts)

Wudang Mountain is the origin of Chinese internal martial arts, like Tai Chi Chuan and Xing Yi Quan. The legend of Zhang San Feng (the founder of Tai Chi Chuan)’s enlightenment has been so widespread that global Kung Fu enthusiasts are drawn to Wudang.

A Fairy Land with Picturesque Scenery

Wudang Mountain’s unique landscapes consist of mystic forests, a wide sea of clouds, and rare ancient plants. Such ethereal and poetic scenes turn even more breathtaking during the sunrise and sunset.

Wudang Mountain History

As early as 627-49 AD, Wudang Mountain had become one of the ā€œseventy-two blessed Taoist landsā€. Ā And in the Song dynasty (960-1279 AD), the imperial family revered the god of Taoism, Emperor of Zhenwu, who took Wudang Mountain as his shrine, as the Guardian God. And then Wudang Mountain saw its peak time in the Ming dynasty: in 1412 AD, Emperor Chengzu sent 300,000 civilians and artisans to build a building complex, including 9 palaces, 8 observatories, 36 monasteries, 72 cave temples, 39 bridges, and 12 pavilions in 12 years.

Wudang was celebrated as the ā€œMountain of Immortalsā€ not only because of Taoism and the magnificent building complex, but also for its martial culture. As the birthplace of internal martial arts that create peace of mind and body in slow and gentle movements, the philosophical principle of ā€œthe soft overcoming the hard,ā€ which came from the martial movements, has become a legacy and shaped the thousands of years of history and vibe of this legendary mountain.

Top Attractions on Wudang Mountain

As mentioned, Wudang Mountain is famous for both its natural scenery, like the sea of clouds, and cultural legacies like the grand ancient building complex. But there are more key attractions you won’t want to miss out on:

Golden Hall (Jinding)

Golden Hall is located on the Tianzhu Peak (main peak). It is China’s largest and oldest bronze-cast wooden palace-style building from 1416 AD. It was believed that it was where the god of Taoism, Emperor of Zhenwu, achieved his immortality. Due to Golden Hall’s special construction material and location, the unique scene of rolling fireballs caused by lightning can be seen on its roof. Thus, it was granted the nickname ā€œThunderfire Hallā€. Also, its intricate internal structure enables an eternal lamp to burn for over 600 years since the Ming dynasty.

Purple Cloud Temple (Zixiao Palace)

Purple Cloud Temple is located under the Zhanqi Peak (northeast of Tianzhu Peak). The surrounding mountains look like two dragons protecting this pearl. That is why it is called the ā€œblessed Zixiaoā€. It was the only surviving double-eaved, hip-and-gable wooden palace-styleĀ from the Ming dynasty. Inside the Temple, enshrining a rare Ming gilded papier-mache statue of the Emperor of Zhenwu. Tourists can also experience of ā€œmorning bells and evening drumsā€ and various Taoist rituals.

Nanyan Palace

Nanyan Palace is a stone-carved masterpiece located on the South Cliff (2.5km west of the Purple Cloud Temple). Its construction began in 1285 AD and finished in 1412 AD. Because of a fire in the Hall of Emperor Xuan (the main hall), it has been a key protected cultural heritage site. A highlight is a dragon-shaped stone beam. This beam is 2.9 meters in length and 0.3 meters in width. The dragon’s head protrudes from the cliff, with an incense burner on its head.

Prince Slope (Taizi Po)

Prince Slope rests on the Lion Peak. It is a transportation hub between Golden Hall and Nanyan Palace. It is named after a legend of the prince of the Pure Joy Empire. He was enlightened by a scene of ā€œan iron rod being ground into a needleā€ and persisted in his path to seek immortality. Therefore, the slope was also called ā€œTruth Templeā€.

After entering the mountain gate, you can see the ā€œNine-Turn Yellow River Wallsā€ā€“ two winding red walls along the hills. They embody the Taoist idea, ā€œtwists lead to consummationā€. And in the rooftop of the Prince Temple, there is an architectural miracle of twelve beams interlaced on a single pillar.

Chaotian Palace

The name ā€œChaotianā€ literally means ā€œfacing the skyā€. A Taoist myth says that the Emperor of Heaven was so fascinated with the beautiful landscapes here that his soul and spirit lingered. As a result, this palace was built on the Gu Shendao (ā€œAncient Sacred Pathā€) in his honor.

Ancient Chinese pilgrims believed that stepping into the palace equals entering the gate separating heaven and the earthly world. The exhibitions in the palace display inscriptions of emperors from different dynasties. And there is a grand waterfall behind the building. The scenery varies based on time: the water cascades down the cliff in summer, while the water forms a sublime ice curtain in winter.
