Why Hong Kong is Great for Family Travel

Below are the reasons why Hong Kong is ideal for a family trip.

Incredibly convenient transportation: The MTR covers almost all major tourist areas. To reach most popular attractions, only minimal transfers are required. Even with young kids, it is easy to travel around.

Convenient medical and shopping facilities: Pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, and large shopping malls are widely available throughout the city. So, if your child needs medical attention during your trip or you need to buy baby supplies or formula, you can quickly find what you need.

Diverse family-friendly attractions: Younger children will enjoy Hong Kong Disneyland, Ocean Park, and LEGOLAND Discovery Centre, while older kids can explore the Hong Kong Science Museum, Hong Kong Space Museum, and natural landscapes such as Sai Kung.

Please Note: Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok, and Central can be extremely crowded during peak hours, and some old urban areas also have narrow streets and plenty of stairs, so a stroller alone may not always be practical.

  • For children aged 0–2: A lightweight stroller combined with a baby carrier is the most practical choice.
  • Theme parks: A stroller is more convenient and offers your child a place to rest when they get tired.
  • Crowded areas such as Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui: A baby carrier is often more convenient than a stroller in crowded areas.
  • Avoid: Large, heavy strollers, especially if your itinerary requires climbing stairs or involves frequent transfers.

Must-Visit Family-Friendly Attractions in Hong Kong

For a family trip to Hong Kong, it is better to choose attractions based on your children’s age and strengths rather than packing too much into one day.

Generally, each of Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park requires a full day. Museums, Victoria Harbour, and attractions in the city center can be arranged flexibly based on your interests.

1. Hong Kong Disneyland: First Choice for a Family Trip

If your children love Disney characters, rides, and themed shows, Hong Kong Disneyland should be at the top of your list.

Set aside at least a full day there instead of trying to combine it with other attractions.

Practical tips:

  • Download the official app in advance to check wait timesof all rides and attractions in real time. Also, you can check the show and parade schedule and plan your itinerary in advance.
  • Head tothe most popular rides first when the park opens.
  • Mix character greetings, parades, shows, and meals into your scheduleto reduce waiting time.
  • Leave some rest time in the afternoon, especially if you are traveling with younger

Families with babies and toddlers should also check out the baby care facilities for feeding, diaper changes, and short breaks.

2. Hong Kong Ocean Park: Animals, Cable Cars, and Marine Education

Ocean Park is a great choice for children who love animals. They will immerse themselves in aquariums, animal exhibits featuring giant pandas, polar animal exhibits featuring penguins, as well as the cable car ride.

Among them, the cable car ride itself is a highlight for families, offering beautiful views of Hong Kong’s mountains and coastline along the way.

Ocean Park is quite large, with plenty of slopes and uphill sections, so comfortable shoes are a must.

Note: Stroller rental is also available at the park. If you only need it occasionally, just rent one there. It can be more convenient than bringing a stroller.

2. Hong Kong Science Museum: Best for Kids Aged 6–12

  • Opening hours: 10:00 – 19:00 (Mon-Wed, Fri); 10:00 – 21:00 (weekends and public holidays)
  • Closed: Thursdays

If your children can grasp more complex ideas and enjoy hands-on exploration, Hong Kong Science Museum is a great match. The interactive exhibits there will be more engaging for them than traditional displays.

Practical tip: To avoid large crowds of local families on weekend afternoons, consider visiting soon after opening or in the late afternoon.

4. Hong Kong Space Museum: Turning Astronomy into a Family Experience

  • Opening hours: 13:00–21:00 (Mon, Wed–Fri); 10:00–21:00 (weekends and public holidays)
  • Closed: Tuesdays

Hong Kong Space Museum is an ideal destination for kids fascinated by space, rockets, and planets.

The museum holds both permanent exhibitions such as the Hall of the Cosmos and Hall of Space Exploration, and astronomy activities on different themes.

So, it is popular to visit the museum in the afternoon or at night and combine it with Tsim Sha Tsui and Victoria Harbour.

5. LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Hong Kong: A Great Choice for Rainy Days

Located in K11 MUSEA, LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Hong Kong is an indoor attraction especially suitable for children aged 3–10. Usually, allow 2–3 hours here..

It features areas like MINILAND, DUPLO Farm, LEGO City Soft Play, a 4D cinema experience, and creative building workshops.

Considering the capacity limits, it is strongly suggested to book tickets online via the official website in advance to avoid being turned away. Strollers are permitted inside, and family restrooms with diaper-changing stations are also available.

6. Victoria Peak + Star Ferry: A Budget-Friendly City Experience

If your children have already spent a full day at a theme park, consider a more relaxed city sightseeing experience.

A recommended route is: Star Ferry → Central → Peak Tram to Victoria Peak.

A Star Ferry ride takes only about 10 minutes, so children are less likely to get tired. Victoria Peak can be reached by the Peak Tram and offers a bird’s-eye view of the cityscape.

Family-Friendly Accommodation Options

When planning a trip to Hong Kong, the room size and location of a hotel are more important than its luxury level for families with kids.

Where to Stay in Hong Kong with Kids?

Tsim Sha Tsui: The most convenient option for first-time visitors. It gathers Victoria Harbour, Star Ferry, and plenty of shopping and dining options, making it ideal for a classic 3-day tour.

Jordan / Yau Ma Tei: This area is more cost-effective than Tsim Sha Tsui, with abundant restaurants, but the streets can be more crowded.

Admiralty / Central: Featuring excellent transport connections and better hotels, they are good choices for families with sufficient budget.

Disneyland: If Disneyland is the main focus of your trip, it is worth staying nearby to save travel time.

What to Look for When Booking a Family-friendly Hotel

When booking a hotel, don’t just search for “Family Room.” Check the following details clearly:

  • Actual room size
  • Whether the baby cot and highchair are provided
  • Whether an extra bed can be provided
  • Whether the room has a bathtub
  • Whether laundry facilities are available
  • Walking time to the nearest MTR station
  • Whether luggage storage is available

For families with one child, a room of at least 25 m² is recommended. If you are traveling with two children or need a baby cot, a room of over 30 m² or a family suite is more comfortable.

Given that you’ll also have a stroller, children’s belongings, and other luggage during your Hong Kong family holiday, it easily becomes cramped when you stay in a small room for three or four nights.

Family-Friendly Dining in Hong Kong

Though Hong Kong offers an incredible variety of dining options, families with children usually have different considerations from other travelers. Especially for those with infants and toddlers, space, dining hours, and highchairs availability are more important.

When looking for a kid-friendly restaurant, check whether it offers:

  • Highchairs
  • A kids’menu or light dishes
  • Easy access to restrooms and baby care facilities

You can find plenty of child-friendly foods in Hong Kong. The most recommended are dim sum, wonton noodles, pineapple buns, congee, and egg tarts.

Please note that when ordering for young children, pay attention to the salt and sugar content, as well as the temperature of the food.

Why Avoid Traditional Cha Chaan Tengs During Peak Hours?

11:30–13:30 and 18:00–20:00 are the busiest hours for cha chaan tengs with crowded spaces and fast turnover, which can make dining with young children stressful. It will also be difficult to find a suitable spot for a stroller. So, it’s better to visit outside peak hours or choose a larger branch.

Hong Kong Family Trip Budget

For a Hong Kong family trip, the main expenses usually include accommodation, theme park tickets, and food. If you don’t stay in high-end hotels or do a lot of shopping, a 3-day tour can be kept within a reasonable budget.

The following table is a reference for 2 adults and 1 child, excluding transportation to and from Hong Kong and shopping:

Item
Estimated Budget
Hotel (2 nights)
CNY 2,500–6,000/USD 372–893
Meals (3 days)
CNY 1,200–2,000/USD 178–298
Transportation in downtown area
CNY 500–1,000/USD 74–149
Attraction tickets
CNY 800–2,000/USD 119–298
Total
Approx. CNY 5,000–10,000/USD 744–1,488

* Hotel prices may increase by around 20–30% during public holidays, and summer and winter vacations.

Budget: Save more on accommodation and dining, and focus on free attractions.

Comfort: Choose a mid-range hotel with convenient transportation and visit both Disneyland and Ocean Park.

Higher budget: Stay in a spacious family room or a resort hotel, minimize time on public transport, and add more theme parks and special dining experiences.

Practical Tips for a Hong Kong Family Trip

  1. Best Time to Visit:

If you are planning to travel to Hong Kong with kids, October to April is the best time, when the weather is comfortable for outdoor activities. July to September is usually not recommended, as the weather is hot and humid, with frequent typhoons and heavy rain.

If you can only travel during the summer holidays, arrange outdoor activities in the morning or evening and escape the summer heat in indoor places like museums, shopping malls, or your hotel during the hottest hours of the day.

  1. Recommended Kid-friendly Activitieson Rainy Days:

A Plan B is essential for a family trip to Hong Kong. In addition to the Science Museum and Space Museum mentioned above, you can take the kids to large shopping malls that offer family-friendly activities.

Hong Kong Park is also recommended as it offers indoor or partially covered spaces such as Edward Youde Aviary and Forsgate Conservatory.

  1. Find Baby Care Facilities in Advance:

Find baby care facilities by district on Hong Kong’s Family Health Service website. Before heading out each day, save the locations of the baby care rooms near your hotel, attractions, and lunch spots on the map.

For example, the Children’s Library at Hong Kong Central Library has a baby care room with seating, a sink, hot and cold water, and soft cushions.

  1. Should You Bring a Stroller:

If you only use it occasionally, just rent one at the attractions directly, such as Ocean Park. However, if your child still needs a regular nap, bring your own stroller to ensure your kid has a better rest.

  1. Avoid Peak Hours on the MTR:

During 07:30–09:30 and 17:30–19:30, avoid the busy sections like Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Mong Kok. Avoiding peak hours by just an hour will make the journey much more relaxing.

  1. Have a Plan in Case You Get Separated:

Before entering a large attraction, take a photo of your child’s outfit that day.

For older children, make  the following agreements with them: don’t run about, find a staff member in uniform if separated, memorize parents’ names, and set a meeting point.

For younger children, put a card with your contact details in their pocket.
