How to Plan a Panda Tour?

Chengdu is, with no doubt, the top destination for in-depth panda experiences. It is known as ā€œHometown of Giant Pandasā€ for its unparalleled access to many well-organized panda bases. Among them, Chengdu Panda Base and Dujiangyan Panda Base are more favored for their proximity to Chengdu. It will take about half a day to visit these two panda bases. When visiting Wolong or Bifengxia panda bases, you should factor in longer travel times.

For dedicated panda enthusiasts, the unique Panda Volunteer Program is an immersive experience, allowing you 7-8 hours to learn the daily routines of panda care and monitorĀ panda behaviors.

Don’t worry if you have short time and don’t have Chengdu on your itinerary. The many city zoos and parks across China, like Beijing Zoo, Chongqing Zoo, Hong Kong Ocean Park, Guangzhou Chimelong Safari Park, will offer you an easy and brief visit to see the adorable pandas.

Grace made our trip to Beijing, Xi’an, Chengdu and Shanghai a truly memorable one, uncomplainingly changing travel plans when we sometimes wanted to modify them. From the awe-inspiring terra cotta warriors in all their clay glory, to the lazy giant pandas doing nothing but lying on their backs eating bamboo, our guides were at our side at all times, patiently explaining it all.

Our contact at Xian Tours, KELLY, did the most amazing job! Not only was she always reachable (even Sunday night) and instantly gave an answer, during our tour. I can say this, because we booked a private family tour (4 persons), with very specific ideas and wishes. Kelly was the most patient person, I don’t remember how many times she re-did our itinerary, an endless amount of messages we exchanged.

Where are the best places to see pandas in China

The five panda bases around Chengdu are the best places to see giant pandas in China, they are: Chengdu Panda Base, Dujiangyan Panda Base, Dujiangyan Panda Valley, Wolong Panda Base, and Bifengxia Panda Base. Among them, Chengdu Panda Base, Dujiangyan Panda Base, and Panda Valley are more recommended for their closer distance to Chengdu city center.

Can you provide some basic facts about giant pandas before my trip?

Yes. Learning some basic facts about giant pandas can help you understand more about these beloved animals and enhance your time while visiting.

Pandas have a close genetic relationship with bears and are good at swimming and climbing trees. Unlike most bears, they have 6 “fingers,” with a thumb-like appendage helping them grip bamboo. They rely on bamboo, with bamboo shoots and leaves making up over 95% of their daily diet. Their average lifespan is 18-20 years in the wild and 25-30 years in captivity. You may often see pandas mostly sleeping if you don’t pick a good time, as they spend 8-12 hours a day asleep. The other 12-16 hours of a day are mainly for eating.

Where do panda live in China?

Currently, giant pandas’ main habitats are scattered in 20 isolated patches of bamboo forest in six mountain ranges in China’s Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. There are over 60 panda bases and research centers in China to protect giant panda’s living habitat. The six mountain ranges for panda’s habitats are the Qinling, Minshan, Qionglai, Daxiangling, Xiaoxiangling, and Liangshan mountains, with Qinling and Minshan mountains the two most important.

Can I see the most famous pandas in China on your tours?

Yes. There are many celebrity pandas living in different panda bases and zoos across China. Based on your preferences, we can arrange visits to the zoo or base where your favorite panda currently resides.

Currently, Hua Hua, one of the most famous pandas in China, lives at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Fu Bao, who recently returned from South Korea, now lives at the Wolong Shenshuping Panda Base. Tian Tian and Mei Xiang, formerly in the U.S., are now residing at the Dujiangyan Panda Base.

When is the best time to visit pandas?

Adult pandas can be seen throughout the year. Their two-hour breakfast window (around 8:30-10:30 am) is the best time of day to see the pandas actively playing and munching on bamboo.
Different seasons will offer you pandas in different stages of life and behaviors.
Spring is the mating season for pandas and also a great time to see 7-9-month-old cubs learning to eat bamboo and interact with their mothers.
Summer offers a rare chance to view newborn panda cubs in incubators, especially at breeding centers.
In autumn, pandas are at their fluffiest and cutest-three-month-old cubs (born that year) may be seen sunbathing or napping on the grass.
Winter brings cooler temperatures that make pandas more energetic; they often climb trees, tumble around, and engage in playful behavior. During this time, the year’s newborn cubs also begin crawling and exploring their surroundings on the grass.

Can I visit both giant panda and less panda (red panda)?

Yes. Several panda bases in China house both giant pandas and red pandas, such as the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and the Dujiangyan Panda Base. You can expect to encounter both species while visiting these bases.

Can I hold a panda during the volunteer program

No. Holding or touching giant pandas is now strictly prohibited in all official volunteer programs in China. A panda’s cute and cuddly appearance may be misleading—they are actually strong wild animals, with a bite force of about 1,300 PSI. Even a panda cub can cause injury. Also, physical contact may cause them stress and increase the risk of disease transmission between humans and animals.

Can I see wild giant pandas?

Seeing wild giant pandas in their natural habitat is extremely rare and challenging. Pandas are typically solitary and inhabit in high mountains, deep valleys and dense bamboo forests. They are more active at night and only appear in more accessible areas. To safeguard panda’s habitats, most protected areas restrict general tourist access. Even in permitted areas, there is no guarantee of a sighting of wild pandas.

Are there other places to visit panda, apart from Chengdu?

Besides Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in the city center, Wolong, Bifengxia, and Dujiangyan panda bases are also popular places to see pandas near Chengdu.
Out of Sichuan Province, Shaanxi, as a main habitat for pandas, also offers places to see pandas, like the Qinling Giant Panda Museum (ē§¦å²å››å®é¦†, only 1 hour’s drive from Xian), Foping Panda Valley, and the natural reserve in Yangxian County (higher opportunities to encounter wild pandas).
Besides that, pandas are also found in most zoos across the country, like the Chongqing Zoo (20+ pandas), and Beijing Zoo (11 pandas).
