FAQs about China Visa-Free Tours

How is the 240-hour or 30-day stay period calculated?

For all China’s visa-free entry policies mentioned above, the duration of stay is calculated from 0:00 on the day after your entry.

Can I visit all Chinese cities under the 240-hour visa-free transit policy?

The answer is no. Most major cities are covered by the 240-hour visa-free transit policy, but not every city in China is included.

Currently, visitors can apply for the 240-hour visa-free transit if they enter China through 65 designated ports, including those in Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Chengdu, Guilin, Yunnan, Jiangsu, and Guangdong.

Can I apply for an extension if the length of my intended stay exceeds 30 days?

If you plan to stay in China for more than 30 days, you shall apply for the appropriate visa in advance at a Chinese embassy or consulate. If, after entering China, you need to stay longer than 30 days for appropriate reasons, please apply for a stay permit at the exit and entry administrations of public security authorities of China. Please note that the application must be submitted before your visa-free stay period expires.

If I am eligible for a visa-free entry policy, do I still need to make declarations to Chinese embassies or consulates in advance?

No, you don’t need to declare in advance to Chinese embassies or consulates as long as you are eligible for a visa waiver. You just need to prepare the required documents for inspection after landing, and complete the Temporary Entry Card for Foreign Nationals.

Do the visa-free policies apply to foreign visitors who travel by forms of transport other than planes?

Yes. Under the 240-hour visa-free transit policy, eligible travelers can now enter China through 65 designated ports, including airports, seaports, and certain railway ports. For more details, see China’s 240-hour Visa-free Transit Policy.

For the 30-day visa-free entry, eligible travelers can enter China through any sea, road and air port open to foreign nationals.
