Written by Veronica |

Fujian is a southeastern province in China facing the Taiwan Strait. It is a popular destination for visitors and many wonder about the best time to visit Fujian, China. This article will take you through Fujian weather in different seasons to help you decide when to plan your Fujian tour.

Fujian has a sub-tropical monsoon climate characterized by warm and humid weathers throughout the year. It sees plenty of rainfall and distinctive seasons. The average temperature of the province fluctuates around 64°F (18°C) depending on specific altitudes and locations.

Rainy season is usually April to September. The highest precipitation mostly occurs in June. Between July and October is typically the typhoon season with strong winds and heavy storms.

When to Visit Fujian

Autumn and winter, particularly from September to December, are generally considered the best time to visit Fujian. The weather tends to be pleasant and dry with reduced rainfall. The landscapes are in their prime with flowers in bloom. You can also avoid the busy summer season when most people travel to Fujian for vacations.

Still, Fujian is a favorable destination all year round with its moderate and humid climate. You’ll find different attractions and activities during each season, including the renowned Gulangyu Island, Fujian Tulou, Wuyi Mountain, Xiapu Mudflat, and many others.

Best Time to Visit Xiamen

The best time to visit Xiamen usually falls in spring and autumn. Both seasons are comfortable, with temperatures averaging around 15–25℃ in spring and 20–28℃ in autumn. The moderate or minimal humidity, blooming flowers (spring), and abundant seafood harvest all enhance your coastal and outdoor experiences.

Time to avoid:

  • June – September: Due to the oppressive heat and humidity, high risk of typhoons, and large crowds (especially in July and August).
  • December – February:Damp cold and biting sea winds detract the coastal experience.

Best Time to Visit Fuzhou

Generally, Fuzhou City is good to visit all year round. Autumn from October to November is especially recommended for its comfortable temperatures (20–25℃) and the lowest humidity of the year. You can expect over 80% sunny days after the typhoon season, and the excellent visibility makes it a prime time to ascend Gu Mountain and Zhenhai Tower for stunning panoramic views.

Other Good Times to Visit Fuzhou

You can also consider visiting Fuzhou during these periods:

  • April to May: Flower spectacle, tea mountain picking, Min River boating. Concentrated rainfall around the Qingming Festival.
  • December – February: Celebrations with traditional lantern displays during Chinese New Year. May be damp and cold.

Best Time to Visit Quanzhou

Late autumn, from October to November, is truly the best time to visit Quanzhou, offering comfortable temperatures (20–26℃), low humidity, vibrant red leaves, and rich festivals such as the Mazu Pilgrimage in the ninth lunar month and the Kaiyuan Temple Water and Land Dharma Assembly on the first day of the tenth lunar month.

Spring months from March to May are also a wonderful time to visit. Though there’s increased humidity, you’ll be rewarded with a sea of azaleas, the vibrant Mazu Birthday Celebration (on the 23rd day of the third lunar month), and tea picking opportunities.

Best Time to Visit Wuyi Mountain

Beyond its stunning natural wonders, Wuyi Mountain is equally known for its Dahongpao tea. Spring, from April to May, is thus the best time to visit Wuyi Mountain when you can experience an immersive tea culture tour there. As nature awakens in this season, you can take a bamboo raft to drift down the Nine-bend Stream while admiring the picturesque peaks and local mysterious hanging coffins. Just prepare for more frequent rain around the Qingming Festival.

Autumn, from September to November, is also a great time, offering pleasant weather, low humidity, and vibrant colors. An autumn hike is especially rewarding in this season.

Best Time to Visit Tulou Area

It is highly recommended to arrange your Fujian Tulou tour in Spring (March to May) considering the comfortable weather (temperature average around 15–25℃), and moderate humidity. Some Tulou buildings will be enveloped in golden rapeseed flowers, creating a vibrant palette across the landscape. This period also see many local folk festivals and activities, such as “Farming and Reading Culture Festival” in the Gaobei Tulou Cluster. You’ll get an opportunity to observe traditional ciba making and enjoy Hakka folk songs.

The same as most other places in Fujian, the Tulou area is also great to visit in autumn for its dry and clear days. Expect pleasant weather, stunning autumn foliage, and vibrant harvest celebrations in this period.
