Imagine spending a whole day taking care of the world’s cutest bear species – does this sound like a dream come true? This one-day Chengdu Panda Volunteer Tour will take you to the Dujiangyan Panda Base to work with professional keepers and experience the best panda volunteer program.
You need to wake up very early and depart around 5:30 am. The driver in Xi’an will pick you up at the downtown hotel and escort you to take China’s efficient Xian high-speed train to Chengdu. Upon arrival, the Chengdu local guide will transfer you directly to Dujiangyan Panda Base, one of the four bases of China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center, and the only scientific research institution in China that focuses on disease prevention and control and field rescue of giant pandas.
In the sanctuary, you will prepare bamboo for the pandas, clean the enclosures, and observe the pandas during the feeding period by the staff – an immersive experience that few travelers can see. You will also make steamed bread of corn for pandas and get a volunteer certificate in the end. This is not just a panda tour in Chengdu; This is a once-in-a-lifetime firsthand experience. After finishing, take the high-speed rail back to Xi’an.

At aroundĀ 05:30 am, our Xian driver will pick you up at your hotel lobby and escort you to Xi’anbei Railway Station for your train D1913 /07:53-11:48 (or train with a similar schedule) to Chengdu. Upon your arrival at Chengdudong Railway Station, the English-speaking guide and the local driver will meet you by holding a board with your name, and then transfer you to Dujiangyan Panda BaseĀ for the exciting panda volunteerĀ program.
Dujiangyan Panda Base is adjacent to Qingcheng Mountain in the north, with a climate and natural environment very suitable for giant pandas. This is China’s first specialized institution for panda rescue and disease prevention and control research, with lush green trees, verdant bamboo, bird songs, fragrant flowers, and fresh air. About an hour and a half, we arrive at the base. The guide will explain how to participate in the volunteer project, and you will follow the local expert panda keeper to start this special program.
The main volunteering activities are as follows:
1. After changing into your work clothes, clean the pandaās enclosures and outdoor play areas.
2. Split bamboo and carry bamboo for the pandas under the help of the panda keepers.
3. Watch the staff feed the pandas and learn how they care for them.
4. Enjoy lunch right at the panda base.
5. Watch a short documentary to learn more about where pandas come from and how they act.
6. Try your hand at making corn buns, a special food for the pandas.
7. At the end, receive your Panda Volunteer Certificate to celebrate your volunteer experience.
Notes:
- You need to book the panda volunteer program at least one week before your visit, using your passport. Send a copy of your passport to your travel advisor to make the booking.
- Get one ID photo ready. It should have a blue background and be 3.5cm by 4.9cm in size.
After finishing the volunteering activity, you will be transferred back to the Chengdu Railway Station for your return to Xian (D1952 /18:09-22:23 or a similar train). Upon your arrival in Xian, a private driver will pick you up and then escort you to your hotel in the downtown area.
