Day-by-day Itinerary

1. Day 1: Beijing Arrival

   Welcome to China! To ensure an easy travel, our private guide will pick you up at the airport and send you to the downtown hotel by a comfortable vehicle.

   The rest of the day is free. We strongly advise you to take metro line 8 to Shichahai to relax. It’s a block comprising of lakes and bar streets. Evening sees the most beautiful moments there, when the warm orange sunset casts its glow on the lake surface. While strolling along the shore of Back Sea, you can feel the breeze gently brush your face. Not far away comes the sounds of bustling streets and faint music. All these present the leisurely ambiance of Beijing.

2. Day 2: Beijing Exploration
   One Day Back to the Qing Empire

   Today begins with a visit to the Tian’anmen Square. The imposing gate tower serves as the symbol of China.

   After a brief tour, continue walking north for about 10 minutes to reach today’s highlight—the Forbidden City. It’s a witness of the rise and fall of Ming and Qing dynasties. During the tour of approximately three hours, our experienced guide will lead you to stay away from the crowds and tell the secret tales hidden in these old palaces. Don’t miss the glazed figurines perched on the roofs. They are silent guards of the Forbidden City. Each bears a unique name and auspicious meaning.

   

   In the Summer Palace, our guide will share stories behind the painted corridors, bricks, and stones, bringing the past to life with vivid narratives. Walk around the Kunming Lake and feel the vastness and tranquility of this imperial garden.

   The Zhichun Pavilion on the eastern shore offers an excellent vantage point to take sunset photos. It’s a gorgeous scene where the Seventeen-Arch Bridge is outlined by the golden glows as the sun sets gradually.

   Optional activities:

   1. If your feel too tired to walk in the Summer Palace, take a boat ride It's fantastic to admire the Longevity Hill and the Buddhist Incense Pavilion on the boat.
   2. Enjoy a spectacular acrobatic show. The actors showcase their superior skills in balancing bowls on the head, contortion, and chair stacking. You will be stunned by their physical strength, flexibility and sense of balance.
   3. Stroll around Yangmeizhu Street in the evening. It’s an old-fashioned Hutong but does not lack trendy cafes. Find a quiet lounge and spend a carefree time.

3. Day 3: Beijing Great Wall Hiking
   A Day of Wonder: From Ancient Great Wall to Imperial Tombs

   We’ve arranged a private car for you to get to Mutianyu Great Wall. It’s located in suburban Beijing and highly favored by foreigners. Here, the watchtowers are very dense and the scenery is enchanting with lush vegetation. Take a cable car for an effortless start. Then hike through the essence section from Watchtower No. 14 to No. 20.

   

   If your physical strength allows, plus, you are enthusiastic in photographing, be sure to climb to Watchtower No. 20 (aka the True Hero Slope). It occupies the commanding height of Mutianyu. There you can take in the magnificent panorama of the Great Wall winding like a dragon and capture it by camera.

   The next stop is Dingling Mausoleum. It’s the only one among the Thirteen Tombs of Ming Emperors whose underground palace has been excavated. The only unearthed golden crown in China can be seen. It was woven from fine gold threads, demonstrating the zenith of craftsmanship of ancient China.

   On the way back, take a short stopover at the venues for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. When the night falls, the steel mesh over the Bird’s Nest is illuminated by red lights. On its opposite side, the Water Cube is glittering with an eerie blue glow.

   Tips:

   1. You can choose to take a cable car at Mutianyu. Our tour guide can help you with tickets booking.
   2. It’s advised to take a stroll around the antique market at night, where the air is filled with the scent of aged books and sandalwood. The delicate porcelain and jade wares and various bracelets will catch your eyes. No need to tell whether the antiques are authentic, but simply savor the unique charm of old gadgets and joy of shopping.

4. Day 4: Beijing to Xian by Bullet Train
   Sacred Altars and Rickshaw Ride Through Old Hutongs

   Our tour guide will lead you to the Temple of Heaven this morning. Walk along the central axis and retrace the historical “Sacred Way” to experience the solemnity of ancient rituals. The core structure is the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests. It’s renowned for the triple-tiered glazed blue dome. The craftsmanship is so superb—not a single nail is used.

   

   Next, head to the Tiantan Park on the outskirts. It’s a window to observe the daily life of local residents, who practice Tai Chi, do morning exercise, and dance there.

   Later take a rickshaw ride through the Hutongs. It’s a delight way to feel the bustling charm of old Beijing. Sit beside the gray wall adorned with climbing colorful roses and sip a cup of coffee. What a leisurely day it is!

   Board a high-speed train bound for Xi’an.

   More fun activities:

   1. Walk into a quadrangle courtyard. Try Chinese brush handwriting under the dappled shades of trees. Feel the oriental flavor between the words.
   2. Savor authentic Mutton Hotpot with your family and friends in the evening. Fresh meat and vegetables are cooked in a copper hotpot, suitable for sharing.

5. Day 5: Xian Terracotta Army Tour
   Feel the Timeless Splendor of Xi’an Before the Terracotta Warriors

   At around 8:00am, drive for the Terracotta Warriors. An hour later, an orderly array of pottery soldiers will come into your view. They number in the thousands, as tall as real humans, and each has a unique face and posture. This is not merely a visit, but more of a dialogue with the ancients from over 2,000 years ago.

   Afternoon is arranged for a visit to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Leave a classic photo with the pagoda against the red wall at the south square. Then climb to the tower top for a distant view where the outlines of urban buildings intertwined with the Qinling Mountains.

   

   Go to Tang Dynasty Everbright City for a night tour. The colorful lit street is lined with attractive Tang style buildings. Actors dressed in ancient costumes dance and recite Tang Dynasty poems. All these remind you of the heyday of Xi’an at Tang Dynasty.

   1. You can make a mini Terracotta Warrior at a nearby workshop if interested.
   2. Try Tang-style makeup and costumes at Tang Dynasty Everbright City, as if you’ve stepped back into the prosperous ancient Chang’an.

6. Day 6: Xi'an to Chengdu by Bullet Train
   Step Back in Time in Xi’an Museum and on the Ancient City Wall

   Compared with the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, the Small Wild Goose Pagoda is quieter and less crowded. Nearby stands the Xi’an Museum housing a rich collection from Western Zhou Dynasty bronze wares to Tang Dynasty tri-color glazed ceramics.

   Ascend the Ancient City Wall, the largest as well as the best-preserved one of its kind in China. Walking on the 13.7-kilometer-long wall, you can see a forest of modern high-rises on one side, while on the other side, the crisscrossing old alleys and blocks record the city’s past.

   

   Check in at the Bell and Drum Tower Square, a landmark on the central axis of Xi’an. After a few minutes walk west, here is the lively Muslim Street. The smell of roast kebabs and desserts permeate the air, making your mouth water. The boutiques on both sides are also very dazzling.

   Finally, take a 3.5-hour high-speed train to Chengdu. Our local driver will pick you up at the airport and escort you to the hotel.

   Tips:

   It’s both effortless and enjoyable to explore the City Wall by cycling. As the wheels zoom on the Wall elder than 600 years, you’ll sense the connection of the past and present.

7. Day 7: Chengdu Panda Visit
   A Glimpse of Chengdu: Pandas, Lively Streets, and Laid-back Lifestyle

   Get up early this morning because we are going to see pandas. Under the guidance of the tour guide, rush straight to the house of Hua Hua, a super female star in the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Observe up close her daily routine: crunching tender bamboos, rolling on a wooden shelf clumsily, and enjoying sun bath.

   Next, enjoy an aimless stroll on the Jinli Street that is flanked by old-style houses and red lanterns. The scent of local snacks like Zhong Dumplings and Dandan Noodles floats in the air. Occasionally, you’ll see vendors make vivid sugar figures with hands. It’s very amazing.

   

   The People’s Park is our next destination. Time seems to go slowly here. Stretch yourself on a bamboo chair and enjoy a cup of tea. Watch the locals chatting or busy playing cards and mahjong. The crisp sound of shuffle and the steam of hot tea present an authentic scene of life in Chengdu.

   Optional activities:

   1. Try the local unique ear-picking service in the People’s Park. The meticulous techniques of the master will make you feel very comfortable and relaxed.
   2. In front of the antique stage in Jinli, watch a face-changing show of Sichuan Opera. The actor can change faces in a second. It’s very mysterious and exciting.
   3. Tasting nine-grid hotpot is an excellent way to experience the essence of Sichuan Cuisine. Order double-flavor broth if you cannot eat spicy food.

8. Day 8: Chengdu to Chongqing by High-speed Train
   One Day Chongqing Tour Before Cruising

   After a rich breakfast, board a high-speed train to Chongqing. Upon arrival, our tour guide will show you around the Ciqkou Ancient Town. Rows of old residences and walls depicting local folk culture will catch your view. The mixed smell of newly cooked Mahua (Fried Dough Twists) and hot pot soup base wafts from street stalls. It’s also very pleasant to stroll along the bank of Jialing River to feel the gentle breeze.

   At the Three Gorges Museum, initiate a journey back to thousands of years. The grand model of the Three Gorges Dam and rich cultural relics vividly show the changes of this land over years. It’s really a key to understand the relation between the Yangtze River and Chongqing.

   

   As the tour ends, our guide will accompany you to the Chaotianmen Dock to board the Yangtze River Cruise.

9. Day 9: Yangtze River Cruise
   Morning Tai Chi Class & the Captain’s Party

   A peaceful dawn on the Yangtze begins with a morning Tai Chi class on the deck. The slow smooth movements and deep breathing can soon awake your body and mind.

   After a while, enjoy a hearty breakfast in the buffet restaurant. Then return to the deck to appreciate the ever-changing mountains on both banks.

   By the way, the cruise company provides you with a variety of entertainment options: you can either take onshore excursions to explore cultural sites or stay on board to fully relax.

   In the afternoon, go onshore to visit the Shibaozhai Pagoda, a 12-storey wooden structure built on the hillside. Climb the stair up to the tower top and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the Yangtze River.

   Tonight, the captain will hold a welcome party. Get prepared for the cheerful talent show by the crew.

10. Day 10: The Awe-inspiring Three Gorges
    Drift Through Gorges and Appreciate Picturesque Landscape

    Today our ship will sail into the most gorgeous section of the Three Gorges. The river winds through the canyons. As the ship glides down, the towering cliffs on both banks are unfolded gradually like huge scroll paintings. Human beings become insignificant in front of this natural masterpiece carved by millions of years of geological movements.

    

    When we arrives at Shennv Stream, transfer to a small boat and slowly enter a quiet valley that resembles a secluded heaven of tranquility. On the way, local Tujia villagers dressed in traditional costumes will sing and dance on the shore or small boats. Then, take a boat back to the cruise.

11. Day 11: Yichang to Shanghai by Flight
    Marvel at the Three Gorges Dam - A Miracle on the Yangtze

    It’s time to bid farewell to the captain and crew. We’ll then disembark to visit the Three Gorges Dam. This giant project spanning the Yangtze River can be compared to a prominent miracle in the history of human engineering.

    

    Standing on the dam crest or sightseeing platform, you will be shocked by the 185-meter-high dam. Our tour guide will interpret the unique construction techniques for you to understand the wisdom and benefits behind this project.

    Then a bus will take you to Yichang Tourist Center. Our private guide will be waiting for you there and promptly transfer you to the airport to catch a flight to Shanghai.

12. Day 12: Shanghai Historical Exploration
    A Leisurely Day to See Different Faces of Shanghai

    Take a pleasant stroll through the old streets of Shanghai. Admire the old-fashioned alleys and renovated antique buildings on both sides of the streets while sipping a cup of coffee.

    At Yuyuan Garden, walk on the zigzag Jiuqu Bridge and stop every now and then to observe the koi and lakeside pavilions. The exquisite rockeries and lattice windows on the corridor make Yuyuan a typical example of Chinese classical gardens.

    

    Exploring the French Concession is a great way to feel the slow pace of Shanghai. Walking through the trails in the shade of plane trees, you will find that modern atmospheric cafes and boutiques coexist with time-honored elements like the engraved porches quite harmoniously.

    Explore the Bund to take in the futuristic modern skyscrapers. Besides, admire the buildings of various styles and listen to the stories of bankers, designers, and adventurers. It’s like an in-depth cultural journey to the 1920s, a golden age of Shanghai.
