Which Cities in Ningxia Are Worth Visiting?
Although Ningxia is relatively small, each of its cities has its own character. There’s no need for first-time visitors to try to cover all five prefecture-level cities. Instead, we recommend focusing on Yinchuan and Zhongwei. If you have more time, adding Wuzhong or Guyuan to your trip will give you a more diverse experience.
Yinchuan — The Best Starting Point for a Ningxia Trip
Yinchuan is the gateway to Ningxia for most travelers and the region’s main center of history and culture. The city offers a fascinating combination of the mysterious Western Xia civilization, the natural scenery of Helan Mountains, and its renowned wine region at the eastern foothills.

Zhongwei — The Best Place for a Desert Experience
After witnessing Ningxia’s historic heritage in Yinchuan, discover its most spectacular natural scenery in Zhongwei.

The city is home to Shapotou, one of China’s best-known desert destinations and an important gateway to the Tengger Desert. What makes the area especially impressive is not simply the desert itself, but the spectacular sight of the Yellow River meeting the desert landscape.
A compact 3-day Ningxia tour covering Western Xia Imperial Tombs, Helan Mountain wineries, and the thrilling Shapotou desert scenic area.
Wuzhong — The Center of Hui Culture and Cuisine
Wuzhong sees fewer visitors compared to Yinchuan and Zhongwei, but it is one of the best places in Ningxia to experience Hui culture, China’s largest Islamic minority group. The city’s highlights include halal cuisine, the Yellow River Tower, Yellow River culture, and traditional Hui lifestyles.
If you’re interested in local food, consider spending half a day to a full day exploring Wuzhong.

Guyuan — Best for an In-Depth Cultural Experience
Located in southern Ningxia, Guyuan has a cooler climate and is home to the Liupan Mountains. Major attractions include the Xumishan Grottoes, Liupan Mountain National Forest Park, and the remains of the Qin Dynasty Great Wall.
Because Guyuan is relatively far from Yinchuan, it is better suited to travelers planning a 5-day or longer itinerary, or those returning to Ningxia for a second trip.

Top Attractions in Ningxia & the Best Things to Do
Ningxia may not be as vast as Xinjiang or Gansu, but its landscapes are remarkably diverse. In a single trip, you can visit ancient historical sites, the Tengger Desert, vineyards and famous Ningxia wineries, as well as cultural heritage of the Yellow River.
Rather than simply checking off attractions, we recommend focusing on immersive experiences. Here are some top things to do on your Ningxia Silk Road tour.
1. Explore the Western Xia Imperial Tombs
The Western Xia Imperial Tombs are one of Ningxia’s most iconic historical sites and are often described as the “Pyramids of the East.”
The site preserves the royal tombs of the Western Xia Dynasty. Visiting the museum alongside the archaeological site provides fascinating insights into the history of this mysterious kingdom.
Allow around half a day to a full day for your visit. Around dusk, the tombs backed by the Helan Mountains create an awe-inspiring sight.

2. Experience the Desert at Shapotou
Almost every first-time visitor to Ningxia includes Shapotou in their itinerary. Popular activities include camel riding, sandboarding, desert ATV adventures, Yellow River ziplining, and traditional sheepskin raft rides.
If your budget allows, consider spending a night at a desert hotel or stargazing camp. Sunset over the Tengger Desert and the night sky will be unforgettable.

3. See the Helan Mountain Rock Paintings
The Helan Mountain Rock Paintings depict scenes of hunting, rituals, and everyday life from ancient times. They provide important insights into the history and culture of northern nomadic civilizations.
The rock paintings are relatively close to the Western Xia Imperial Tombs, so it’ll be easy to visit both attractions on the same day.

4. Visit Zhenbeibao Western Film City
Zhenbeibao Western Film City is one of China’s most famous filming sites. Lots of classic titles including A Chinese Odyssey and Red Sorghum were filmed here.
Even if you’re not familiar with Chinese cinema, the site is worth spending 2–3 hours taking in its distinctive western China frontier landscapes and atmosphere.

5. Visit a Winery on the Eastern Foothills of the Helan Mountains
Ningxia has become one of China’s most internationally recognized wine-producing regions. Many wineries offer vineyard tours, cellar visits, professional wine tastings, and food-and-wine pairing experiences. In recent years, wine tourism has become particularly popular with couples and food lovers.

6. Enjoy the Scenery and Birdwatching at Shahu Lake
Shahu Lake combines lake, wetlands, and desert landscapes, making it one of Ningxia’s signature natural attractions. During spring and autumn, migratory birds can be spotted here. The area is especially popular with families and photography enthusiasts.

How to Plan a Ningxia Itinerary
Although Ningxia’s attractions are relatively concentrated, Yinchuan and Zhongwei are still more than two hours apart by road, so before trying to squeeze in as many attractions as possible, it’s important to plan an efficient route.
For most travelers, 4–5 days is the ideal length of time to experience the highlights of Ningxia.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Ningxia?
Ningxia has a dry climate, relatively little rainfall, plenty of sunshine, and significant temperature differences between day and night.
For most travelers, April through October is the best time to visit. Out of these months, September and October offer the best overall travel experiences with comfortable temperatures, grape harvests, beautiful autumn scenery in the Helan Mountains, and spectacular desert sunsets.
If this is your first trip to Ningxia, we recommend avoiding the coldest part of winter unless you specifically prefer a quieter experience.
Spring — April to May
Average temperatures are around 10–20°C (50–68°F), although mornings and evenings can still be cool. Bring a light jacket.
Recommended things to do: hiking in the Helan Mountains, visiting the Helan Mountain Rock Paintings, exploring the Western Xia Imperial Tombs, birdwatching at Shahu Lake, and visiting wineries.

Summer — June to August
Daytime temperatures can exceed 30°C (86°F), but it remains pretty dry. UV rays can be strong. The desert can be very hot during the day, while nighttime temperatures may drop by more than 10°C. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a light jacket.
Recommended things to do: sandboarding at Shapotou, desert ATV adventures, Tengger Desert camping, Yellow River rafting, and stargazing.
Autumn — September to October
Autumn is the best season to visit Ningxia. The weather conditions are stable with comfortable temperatures around 15–25°C (59–77°F). It is also the grape harvest season when the Helan Mountains are the most colorful, and desert sunsets are particularly gorgeous.
Recommended things to do: visit wineries, join grape harvesting activities, enjoy wine tasting, and take cellar tours.
Winter — November to March
The number of visitors drops significantly in winter, making it a good time for travelers who prefer a quieter experience. Temperatures can fall below -10°C (14°F), some desert activities may be suspended, and extended outdoor activities are not recommended.
Recommended things to do: If your main interests are wineries, food, and city culture, consider a short 3-day trip to Ningxia in the winter.
Ningxia Transportation Guide

What to Eat in Ningxia
Beyond its deserts and mountains, one of the biggest surprises for many visitors is Ningxia’s food. As one of China’s main regions inhabited by the Hui ethnic group, Ningxia’s cuisine combines northwestern Chinese flavors, halal culinary traditions, and influences from the Silk Road. Local lamb is particularly famous for its quality, with a rich flavor but little of the strong smell sometimes associated with mutton.
Must-Try Ningxia Foods
Make sure you try hand-pulled lamb, Lahuhu (a spicy, savory local dish), braised lamb offal, slow-cooked lamb, Yellow River carp, Eight-Treasure Tea, and Ningxia goji berry products.
For local foods, popular areas include Huaiyuan Night Market and the Drum Tower area in Yinchuan, as well as Wuzhong.

Why Is Ningxia Wine Worth Trying?
In recent years, the Ningxia wine region at the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains has become one of China’s best-known wine-producing regions internationally. The region’s dry climate, little rainfall, abundant sunshine, and large day-night temperature differences create favorable conditions for growing grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Ningxia is sometimes referred to by the media as “China’s Bordeaux.”
Many wineries offer cellar tours, vineyard walks, wine tastings, and food-and-wine pairing experiences, making wine tourism an excellent addition to a Ningxia itinerary.
Where to Stay in Ningxia
Ningxia offers a wide range of accommodation, from modern city hotels to desert camps and distinctive boutique stays. For first-time visitors, we recommend a two-base itinerary of Yinchuan & Zhongwei, which minimizes unnecessary travel time.
