- Day 1: Shanghai to Suzhou by Private VehicleClassical Gardens, Historic City Gates, a Water Town Boat Ride
After picking you up at your Shanghai hotel, your guide and driver will take you to Suzhou by private vehicle in about 1.5 hours. From exquisite classical gardens and ancient city ruins to the tranquil canals and bridges in Zhouzhuang, you’ll spend a full day exploring these distinctive landscapes of today’s Jiangnan region.
Start at the Master of the Nets Garden. Though small, it is filled with details worth appreciating.
Wander along the paths through the halls, courtyards and ponds to see the rockeries, plants and traditional buildings around the water. With each step, the scenery changes.
Inside Suzhou’s Master of the Nets Garden Move on to Pan Gate. Observe the well-preserved ancient city gates, city walls and waterways and learn about the layout that combines water and land transportation with city defenses. Walk around and take in the views of the pagodas, gates and canals.
Drive about 1 hour to Zhouzhuang Water Town. Take a leisurely stroll along the flagstone path and canals, cross bridges, pass through alleys, and take a look at the traditional residences and riverside buildings.
