If you are looking for a tour to see the Great Wall without the interruption of many tourists, or to experience the wild Great Wall in its most original unrestored condition, this 2-day hiking route should be your ideal choice.
Hiking from Gubeikou to Jinshanling, you will look into the most highlighted sections of the Great Wall, uncover the comprehensive military defense system in ancient China, be impressed by many amazing natural views, and experience unique overnight camping on the Great Wall.
The hiking duration is about 3-4 hours each day, and most of the hiking is moderate, rewarding for all hiking, photography, nature and history lovers.
Jinshanling Great Wall is believed as the most beautiful section of Great Wall. With both un-restored and restored sections, Jinshanling preserves the quintessence of Ming Dynasty Great Wall, including dense watchtowers and a comprehensive military defense system.
Gubeikou is a wild Great Wall section retaining its original composition. Once served as an important pass between ancient China and Mongol, Gubeikou is more interesting historically.

Day-by-day Itinerary
- Day 1: Gubeikou Great Wall Hiking - Overnight camping on the Great WallGubeikou Great Wall - General Tower
08:30-10:30AM
After breakfast, meet your guide and driver at the hotel lobby at the appointed time (your guide will contact you on the previous day ). Then, a 2-hour drive will take you to a local village. Start your Great Wall hiking trip after a simple lunch.
11:30 - 14:30 PM
Start your hiking towards the camping site. It will be a nice hike through many watchtowers of the 1400-year old Great Wall, and you can have some stops en route to explore its history clues and take some amazing pictures.
A 3 hours’ hiking will bring you to the highlight of Gubeikou Great Wall - General Tower. Occupying the highest point of the area, the General Tower overlooks the Gubeikou Great Wall and Jinshanling Great Wall. If the weather is good, a panoramic view from the tower is truly memorable, you can see all the way till the highest tower on Simatai Great Wall. What a great photo opportunity!
15:00 PM – 17:00 PM
Then, you’ll need to follow the side-road to bypass the military base on the way from Gubeikou to Jinshangling. It’s a winding road through the mountain ridges, offering great views of rural croplands.
You can expect a family dinner with our local farmer friends at dust. Then continue your hiking until you reach the camping site on the mountain ridge beside Jinshanling Great Wall. Words can’t describe the feeling of enjoying stunning sunset, sitting around the campfire with new friends and appreciating the starry night sky together.
Note:
1. You can either carry your luggage to the camping site or put it in the vehicle.
2. The camping site can be a watchtower on the Great Wall, or the mountain ridge beside the Great Wall, up to your choice.
Gubeikou Great Wall - Day 2: Jinshanling Great Wall hiking - BeijingJinshanling Great Wall & Ming Dynasty Great Wall
07:30-10:30AM
Enjoy your time to appreciate the amazing sunrise from 5:00 to 5:30 AM before a simple breakfast. Then, hike along a countryside road where you will be rewarded a great view angle for great photos. Continue hiking to the Jinshanling Great Wall which is extremely rewarding for all hiking, nature and history lovers. Here you will be introduced to some miraculous ancient military defense facilities, including barrier walls, battlement walls, watchtowers, fort barbettes, shooting holes, horse ramps, and horse blocking walls.
Afterwards, hike another 30 minutes to its highlight section combining wild and partially restored Walls. It’s the place you can see the original Ming Dynasty Great Wall.
10:30-14:00AM
After 1 hour’s hiking on the Jinshanling Great Wall, your Great Wall hiking adventure comes to the end. You will be driven back to the hotel at 14:00 PM.
