Highlights of This Tour:
Stroll across the pristine white salt crust after you take a tiny train to the center of Chaka Salt Lake. The sky and clouds reflect perfectly beneath your feet, making you feel like you are walking on clouds.
Hike the red cliffs of Pingshanhu Grand Canyon to overlook the geological drama. Climb a sunset viewpoint in Zhangye’s Colorful Danxia Scenic Area for a breathtaking spectacle: the folded, multi-hued ridges ignite in layers of crimson, burnt orange, and gold.
Ascend Jiayuguan Pass, the grand fortress known as “The Most Majestic Pass Under Heaven”, and gaze over the endless Gobi towards the snow-capped Qilian range. Stroll along the Cantilever Great Wall and appreciate the stark, timeless scenery of the Black Mountains.
Enter Mogao Grottoes, the millennia-old Buddhist niche carved into desert cliffs, where brilliant murals and painted sculptures are preserved. It’s a great chance to learn about Buddhist legends and the daily life of ancient people across different Chinese dynasties.
Climb Mingsha Sand Dunes, overlook Crescent Moon Spring, and then experience the thrill of sliding down steep ridges. As the sun sets, hop on a camel and sway gently with a caravan. The sounds of camel bells lead you to the ancient Silk Road era, immersing you in a fantastic dream.
Day-by-day Itinerary
- Day 1: Arrival in Xining
Your private guide will pick you up at the airport/railway station and then help you check in. Let’s begin your journey at Kumbum Monastery (Ta’er Temple), where crimson walls and golden roofs stand out against the blue sky.
Kumbum Monastery Take time to appreciate the “Three Artistic Wonders”: exquisite butter sculptures, colorful murals, and detailed appliqué thangkas, celebrated for their fine craftsmanship and vivid colors.
Tips：
- Dress appropriately (long pants or skirts below the knee) because it is a religious site.
- Do not photograph the Buddha statues, murals, or butter art inside the halls.
- Turn prayer wheels and walk around stupas in a clockwise direction only.
- Day 2: Xining to Chaka Town by Private VehicleEnjoy Lake-and-mountain Scenery and Postcard-perfect Photo Opportunities
Leaving the city behind, you’ll drive towards Qinghai Lake, crossing Riyue Mountain, the geographical boundary between the Loess Plateau and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Soon, the immense sapphire expanse of Qinghai Lake unfolds. In summer (June to August), brilliant golden rapeseed flowers blanket the shores. Blue water, golden rapeseed fields, and green grasslands form a stunning, multi-layered landscape.

- When you come here in May, visit Erlangjian or view Bird Island (now closed for landing) from a distance. You can observe hundreds of thousands of migratory birds like bar-headed geese and brown-headed gulls via binoculars, witnessing an unforgettable wildlife spectacle.
- You can also take a boat cruise to fully embrace the breathtaking panoramas.

- The sun is fierce, especially in summer, so pack sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat.
- Severe altitude sickness can occasionally occur; first-timers on the plateau should take it slow and avoid strenuous activity.
- Day 3: Xining to Zhangye by High-speed TrainStep into a World of Crystalline Clarity, Deep Serenity, and Liberating Space
Known as the “Mirror of the Sky,” Chaka Salt Lake earns its name with brilliant reflections that merge water and sky. Visit between June and September, when sunny days keep the lake mirror-calm, perfectly reflecting the clouds in the sky.
A miniature train takes you deep into the salt fields, stopping at designated points where you can hop off and explore. Slip on shoe covers and step onto the lakebed. White salt crystals crunch underfoot, while the boundless mirror of water surrounds you. It truly feels like walking through the clouds.
Chaka Salt Lake Afterwards, drive back to Xining and board an evening high-speed train bound for Zhangye.
Travel tips：
- It is recommended to wear bright colors like red or vivid yellow if you want to take standout photos of your reflection.
- The UV here is intense on sunny days. Pack sunglasses and a hat, and shield your face, neck, and arms from direct exposure.
- Day 4: Zhangye ExplorationExplore the Glorious Buddhist Temple Culture and Magnificent Natural Landforms
Start at the Great Buddha Temple (Dafo Temple), where Asia’s largest indoor reclining Buddha lies — an awe-inspiring statue 34.5 meters long and 7.5 meters wide at the shoulders. Built as a royal monastery in 1098 during the Western Xia era, the temple brims with ancient history and deep cultural significance.
Then, head to Pingshanhu Grand Canyon, often hailed as “China’s own Grand Canyon.” This landscape is a dramatic fusion of Danxia and Yardang landforms. Its red-bed rocks date back 108 to 240 million years, with remarkably clear stratification visible today.
A family visiting Zhangye Rainbow Mountains A shuttle bus brings you to Platform 1 for a breathtaking panoramic view. According to your guide’s introduction, imagine the rock shapes as figures resembling lovers, a dragon, and a turtle. Around 4 pm, settle at Platform 4 to watch a glorious sunset wash over the canyon — a perfect conclusion to a day of cultural and natural marvels.
Special notes：
- The canyon hike takes 2–3 hours. It is NOT recommended for travelers with knee or leg problems.
- You’ll face countless steps, so sturdy, non-slip shoes are absolutely essential.
- For a deeper experience, add on camel rides, off-road buggies, and photo opportunities with camels.
- Day 5: Zhangye Rainbow Mountain TourImmerse Yourself in Zhangye’s Remarkable Grotto Art and Stunning Natural Scenery
Mati Temple, an hour’s drive from downtown, is one of the “Three Great Artistic Grottoes of the Hexi Corridor.” Built into the mountainside, it seamlessly blends Han Chinese and Tibetan Buddhist styles.
Mati Temple The highlight is the Thirty-Three Heavens Grottoes, comprising 21 caves across seven-tier levels, stacked like a pagoda on a sheer cliff. The narrow internal staircases—only wide enough for one person—add a dose of exhilaration. At the top, soak in magnificent Qilian Mountain views.
Then, head to the Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, a certified marvel. Explore the Rainbow Danxia zone, where layered ridges and kaleidoscopic rock folds form a natural masterpiece. Watch sunset from Platform 4 as the rocks glow brilliant red, orange, and gold.
Check in the Kaoshan Base Camp near the Rainbow Mountains. At night, sleep in a traditional Mongolian yurt under the stars.

- No drones allowed inside Rainbow Danxia scenic area; professional photo platforms are available instead.
- Rainbow Mountains sunset timing: approx. 19:00–20:00 (summer) / 18:00–19:00 (winter).
- Kaoshan Base Camp yurts do not have private bathrooms — only shared bathrooms and toilets are provided.
- Day 6: Jiayuguan to Dunhuang by Private VehicleBegin a Frontier Time-travel, and Step back into the Days of Ancient Silk Road Garrisons
Drive through the dusty, yellow desert to reach Jiayuguan Fortress, famously dubbed "The Most Majestic Pass Under Heaven" — the western terminus of the Ming Great Wall. From the battlements, gaze out at the stark, endless Gobi stretching toward the snow-crowned peaks of the Qilian Mountains. Within the fortress complex, stroll along towering walls and explore remarkably preserved military structures like the barbican and watchtowers, imagining the soldiers once stationed here.
Jiayuguan Pass A 30-minute drive then brings you to Cantilever Great Wall (also called Overhanging Great Wall), dramatically built into a 45-degree mountain ridge, seeming to hang in mid-air — hence its evocative name. Climbing its near-vertical steps is a demanding challenge, but the stunning panorama of the Black Mountain Gobi makes every breathless moment count when you view it from the top.
After this epic journey through Ming Dynasty frontier history, continue to Dunhuang for an overnight stay.
- Day 7: Dunhuang HighlightsDiscover the Mogao Grottoes—the World’s Largest and Best-preserved Treasury of Buddhist Art
Carving began in AD 366 and continued for roughly 1,000 years, yielding 735 caves in total; 492 of them contain murals and painted sculptures. Over 45,000 square metres of wall paintings and more than 2,400 painted clay figures survive today. Notably, Cave 45 still preserves its original painted sculptures from the Tang Dynasty (618–907). All these treasures chart the evolving religious beliefs, social customs, and East‑West cultural exchange.
Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this cliffside complex stands as a monumental testament to the dialogue between civilizations that once flourished along the Silk Road.
As dusk settles, enter the Mingsha Sand Dunes and Crescent Moon Spring area to witness the striking harmony of golden dunes and an emerald oasis. Among the desert activities on offer, sand sliding is the star attraction. Grab a board, lean back, and rocket down a steep sand ridge as the wind howls in your ears — pure, heart-pumping thrill.
Crescent Spring Later, soak up Dunhuang’s nightlife at the Shazhou Night Market, where you can taste local street food and browse for souvenirs.

- Day 8: Departure from Dunhuang
Enjoy a leisurely morning at your own pace. As the journey draws to a close, a private car will transfer you to the airport or train station.
