Where to Stay in Hong Kong: Top Districts and Insider Stays

Written by Catherine |

Are you still wondering about where to stay on your Hong Kong tour? Well, don’t worry, you have got to the right place. Regarding the city’s enormously diverse types of hotels and different neighborhood atmospheres, we’ve prepared you a detailed guide of accommodation options in Hong Kong.

In this article, you’ll find information about some of the most recommended areas in Hong Kong for visitors to stay, the best high-end luxury or budget hotels, and shopping, sightseeing, and food hunting choices around these spots. So now, keep reading, and figure out which area or even which specific hotel you’d like to stay in Hong Kong.

Overview of Hong Kong Districts and Areas

Before we get to the main points about hotels, it’s better to first grab a brief overview of Hong Kong’s city areas. Hong Kong has three main parts: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon Peninsula, and New Territories. Each part is further divided into 18 smaller districts.

And when finding a stay in Hong Kong online, you’ll often encounter names like Tsim Sha Tsui or Mong Kok, and they are actually even smaller parts of a certain district. So simply speaking, if you’re looking up a hotel location in, for example, Tsim Sha Tsui on a map, find the district first (Yau Tsim Mong District), and then locate the specific part.

ThisĀ processĀ can make things way easier and clearer if you also want to study the neighborhood around your hotel in advance.

Top 5Ā Recommended AreasĀ to Stay in Hong Kong

1.Ā Tsim Sha TsuiĀ (尖沙咀): Best Hong Kong Stays for First-Time Visitors

Pros and Cons:

  • Pros:It’s located in the city center, with convenient transportation options. Hotels in Tsim Sha Tsui are usually close to attractions like Victoria HarbourĀ and have a lot of shopping and eating options.
  • Cons:Many hotels have been open for a long time, so their facilities can be relatively old.

Location & Transportation:

Tsim Sha TsuiĀ is in Yau Tsim Mong District, and it’s Hong Kong’s transportation hub. If you are traveling by flights, you can go to Tsim Sha Tsui by taxi, bus, airport express, or bus+MTR. The bus is the most recommended. Bus line A21 goes directly to the Tsim Sha Tsui bus stop (33 HKD/4.5 USD, 50-60 minutes).

If arriving by high-speed train at Hong Kong West Kowloon Station, you can simply walk to Tsim Sha Tsui (10-15 minutes). Taxis and the MTR are also available. Austin MTR station is just inside the railway station, go there and take the Tsuen Wan Line toward Central and travel for one or two stops.

Many hotels have easy access to the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR Station, no matter where exactly you stay, you will have a smooth trip.

Best Nearby Highlights:

  • Tsim Sha Tsui has a lot of tourist attractions, such as the Avenue of Stars and Victoria Harbour.
  • For those looking for shopping opportunities, you can find K11 Musea and Harbour City, two of the most renowned shopping centers in Hong Kong.
  • For foodies, Tsim Sha Tsui is full of wonderful Hong Kong flavors. Many cha chaan tengs, like Waso Cafe (8:00-22:00), will give you an excellent dining experience.
  • Nighttime activitiesĀ are also charming. You can take the Star Ferryto explore Victoria Harbour (HKD 6.5/0.8 USD), have a drink in Tsim Sha Tsui’s bar street, and embrace the city view on Harbour City’s observation deck.

  • Pros:This is the famous shopping paradise in Hong Kong. Streets are quite prosperous and busy, which matches many people’s expectations of Hong Kong. High-end hotels are available, and also budget-friendly ones.
  • Cons:There are not many tourist attractions. Hotels are a bit older.

Transportation:

From the airport to Causeway Bay, you can choose from the Airport Express and bus line A11/E11. If you take the Airport Express, first travel to Hong Kong Station (terminal) and then transfer to the MTR or take a taxi ride (about 200 HKD/25 USD in total, 40 min).

Bus lines A11 (41.7 HKD/5.5 USD, 50-70 min) and E11 (21.7 HKD/3 USD, 80-105 min) are also recommended, and they don’t need transfers.

From the railway station, you can take the MTR train to Causeway Bay. Go to Kowloon Station (not inside the railway station, about 10 min by walk), and take the Tung Chung Line to Hong Kong Station. Then transfer to the Island Line toward Chai Wan. Take off the train at Causeway Station.

MTR and taxi both easily serve this area, but it’s more famous for its tramway experience (å®å®č½¦). It’s a really Hong Kong-style travel method, used by locals in their daily lives.

Best Nearby Highlights:

Causeway is a major shopping circle. Times Square Hong Kong is one of the most famous landmarks here. For the best shopping experience,Ā go visit Hysan Place, SOGO Causeway Bay, and Paterson Street. Together they complete a perfect city walk route. Along the way, you’ll see luxury and designer brands or some small shops selling unique local souvenirs.

Dining choices are incredibly richĀ in Causeway Bay, recommendations include Wing Kee Noodle (11:30-21:00) and Milk Cafe (7:00-22:00). NightlifeĀ is also bustling, there are many bars in this area, especially on Yiu Wa Street.

3.Ā Central and Admiralty (äøēŽÆ和金钟): Best for Top Experience and Sea Views

Pros and Cons:

  • Pros:Central is Hong Kong’s commercial and political center. There are many modern skyscrapers (which you can often see in pictures of Hong Kong). Hotels have easy access to public transportation and new facilities.
  • Cons:There are many uphill and downhill slopes, a little bit challenging for a full-day walk. Hotels here are generally more expensive.

Transportation:

Airport Express is the most convenient way to travel from the airport to Central. It’s a direct ride, only takes 24 minutes, and costs 120 HKD (15 USD). Bus line A11 also arrives here.

From the railway station, it’s more convenient to take the MTR train. Go to Kowloon Station (not inside the railway station, about 10 min by walk), take the Tung Chung Line to Hong Kong Station, and use Exit C.

Except for traveling with MTR, you can also take the tram (Ding Ding) here. You may pass a famous S-shaped curve along the way, and it’s a hot photo spot.

Best Nearby Highlights:

When staying in Central, first visitĀ attractionsĀ like the Central Market and then take the Mid-Levels Escalators. Along the way, have an exploration of Tai Kwun and the surrounding neighborhood. This escalator trip plus a short hike will eventually lead you to the top of Victoria Peak. Another sightseeing spot is the Victoria Harbour, the view is even more rewarding when night falls.

There are plenty of shopping opportunities. The Landmark (置地广场) has luxurious brands, and many visitors are more interested in small shops selling local souvenirs in Central Market.

One restaurant you cannot miss is Lan Fong Yuen. It’s one of Hong Kong’s most famous dining spots. If you want to explore Central at night, Lan Kwai FongĀ has the best bars and clubs, while Central Harbourfront is perfect for night strolls.

4.Ā Mong Kok (ę—ŗ角): Best Hong Kong Stays for CultureĀ and Budget Options

Pros and Cons:

Pros:Ā Mong Kok’s hotels are normally cheaper than those in other areas. Staying here allows you to easily find Hong Kong’s old memories. Transportation is convenient.

Cons:Ā By comparison,Ā Mong KokĀ is less organized than other areas, and it can be noisier in the hotels.

Transportation:

If traveling from the airport, still take the A21 bus we mentioned in the sections above (see Tsim Sha Tsui transportation).

From the railway station, walk to Austin Station (inside the railway station), take the Tuen Ma Line toward Wu Kai Sha to Ho Man Tin Station, then transfer to the Kwun Tong Line toward Tiu Keng Leng and get off at Mong Kok Station.

Mong Kok station connects to two MTR lines, so staying in this area is truly convenient.

Best Nearby Highlights:

Mong Kok is a rather special area, here you can explore most of Hong Kong’s local culture. There are not many famous attractions, and visitors usually come to buy small items and goods (with much cheaper prices than in other places like Central) and take photos of nearby neighborhoods, which still bear the old Hong Kong vibes. It’s interesting to wander in those colorful and busy markets, especially Ladies’ Market (night market, shops and stalls won’t be open during the day) and Tung Choi Street (Goldfish Market especially, the movieĀ Chungking ExpressĀ has shot a scene here).

5. Lantau Island (大屿山): Best Hong Kong Stays for Airport Transfers and Disneyland

Pros and Cons

Pros: Near to the airport and attractions like Disneyland, Tai O and Tian Tan Buddha

Cons:Ā Far from city center, less convenient transportation.

Transportation:

Hong Kong International Airport is just on this island. So if you want to travel to other places on the island, you can take airport bus lines like S1 or 21 to major spots.

If you arrive in Hong Kong by train, go to Kowloon Station (not inside the railway station, about 10 min by walk) and take the Tung Chung Line to Tung Chung Station.

A special means of transport you’ll encounter on the island is the cable car. It’s actually a significant part of the island experience. You can take it from a spot near Tung Chung Station, travel for about 20 minutes to reach Ngong Ping Village, and then walk up to Tian Tan Buddha.

Nearby Highlights:

Basically, visitors who stay on the island are looking for either sightseeing opportunities or short transfers to the airport. Here, you can have easy access to Hong Kong Disneyland,Ā Tian Tan Buddha, and Tai O (a beautiful fishing village). Unlike other areas, which show visitors the bustling rhythm of Hong Kong, this island is where you can embrace the city’s best natural views. If you would like to hunt for foods here, except for the local flavors, try the vegetarian meal in Po Lin Monastery. You may not find too many activities here at night, the best is always enjoying the night views of the sea when it’s illuminated by city lights.

Key Things to Know Before Ordering Your Hong Kong Hotel

  • Deposit: Most hotels require a security deposit, especially 5-star/4-star
  • Book in advance:It’s recommended to book at least 1–2 weeks ahead. Prices usually rise closer to the check-in date, and they would actually soarĀ during holidays and peak seasons.
  • Toiletries: Due to Hong Kong’s current plastic reduction policy, many hotels no longer provide disposable toiletries. So it’s best toĀ put this onĀ yourĀ packing list or you can also buy some when you arrive.

  • Choose higher floors:If possible, pick a room on a higher floor for better views and less street noise.
  • Soundproofing:Some hotels may have poor sound insulation.Ā It would be wise to bring earplugsĀ with you, which willĀ be helpful for a good night’s sleep.
