Monte Forte (or Monte de Forte, Fortaleza do Monte) in Santo António, Macau, is the oldest and largest European fort in East Asia. It was built in 17th century by Jesuits to protect their church and mission in Macau. Today, it is a popular tourist destination as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
With an area of 2.47 acres (10,000 square meters), Monte Forte has formidable walls with 32 cannons. The interior has been reformed into the Macau Museum which showcases Macauās history from ancient times to the present. As the sun sets on Macau, the historic Monte Forte stands in great contrast to dazzling city life.

Explore the Macau Museum
The Macau Museum inside Fortaleza do Monte has three floors of exhibits and interactive displays.
The first level is a presentation of Macauās early history and development influenced by communication between Chinese and Portuguese cultures in terms of religion and trade.
The second floor showcases local Macau traditions, folk arts, religious ceremonies, and traditional festivals.
The third floor depicts contemporary Macau and the achievements of some influential individuals.
Climb the Fort Battlements
There is a large open space on Monte Forte with green grass, towering old trees, and a giant steel gun. Youāll also see many historic structures such as the the ancient bell and the ancient pagodas, which was one of the sites of Society of Jesus. The stone carving at the entrance of the fort records its military success against foreign enemies.
Standing on Fortaleza do Monte, especially during sunsets, you can overlook the vibrant city as dazzling lights come on.
Visit the nearby Ruins of St. Paul’s
Ruins of St. Paulās is the remnant of what was once the largest church in Asia. It was tragically destroyed in a fire. The ruins are now one of the most notable landmarks of Macau. Take a short walk there from Monte Forte, admire the ornate faƧade, and visit the Museum of Sacred Art and Crypt.

Best Time to Visit Monte Forte
The best time frame for your Macau tour and visiting Monte Forte is from October to February. The weather is usually cool and clear with low humidity and reduced rainfall. January or February are the time for exciting celebrations of Chinese New Year, with fireworks, parades, and lion dances.
Summers tend to get pretty hot and humid, and lots of tourists travel to Macau in July and August. So attractions can be crowded. Traveling expenses can be higher too.
How to Get to Monte Forte
Bus: Take one of buses NO. 3, 3X, 4, 6A, 8A, 18A, 19, 26A, and 33 to Hospital Kiang Wu station near Monte Forte. Or take buses NO. 2, 3, 3A, 5, 7, 10, 10A, 11, 18, or 21A to Senado Square station. Then take a 10-minute walk there.
Taxi: You can take a taxi from pretty much anywhere in Macau to Fortaleza do Monte. The fare depends on the distance and traffic. For example, a taxi ride from Macau Taipa Ferry Terminal to Monte Forte typically costs around MOP 60 ($7.46).
Walking: If you’re in the area, walking to Monte Forte is a good option too. You can stop by nearby attractions like Ruins of St. Paulās and Senado Square. These attractions are very close to each other.

Largo do Senado SquareĀ has been Macaoās urban centre for centuries and is still the most popular venue for public events and celebrations today. Around the square are Portuguese-style pastel-coloured buildings with arched windows, doors, and corridors. Together with distinctive mosaic wavy tiled paving, the square has a Mediterranean atmosphere.
Matteo Ricci Statue pays tribute to theĀ esteemed Italian Jesuit missionary and scholar who introduced Western science and Christianity to China in the 16th century. Itās about a 10-minute walk from Monte Forte.
Macau Tower isĀ a remarkable skyscraper that you can visit for a panoramic view of the city. If youāre one for adrenaline rush, try activities like bungee jumping, skywalk, and tower climbing.
