Route A: The Classic Pilgrimage
Difficulty: High
- Path: Hongmen Visitor Center – Hongmen Palace – Mid-Heaven Gate – Eighteen Bends – South Heaven Gate – Bixia Temple – Jade Emperor Peak
- Duration: 4-6 hours on foot (summit only). Add 1-2 hours if starting from Dai Temple.
With its 7,863 steps, the famous āImperial Pathā It talks about important cultural places like temples, steles, and the famous Eighteen Bends. Hard, but necessary for the whole journey.
Route B: The Scenic & Efficient Route
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Path: Tianwai Village Visitor Center (Bus) – Mid-Heaven Gate – (Cable Car / Hike) – South Heaven Gate – Bixia Temple – Jade Emperor Peak
- Duration: Bus (30 min) + Cable Car (15 min) + Summit walk (1 hr) ā 1.75 hrs (minimal hike). Or Bus + 2-hour hike from Mid-Heaven Gate.
The main access that is easy. Take the bus to Mid-Heaven Gate. Then, you can either take the cable car or walk to the top, which will take two hours. Great for saving time and energy and still getting to the top places.
Route C: The Natural & Romantic Route
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Path: Peach Blossom Valley Visitor Center – Colorful Stone Creek – Peach Blossom Source Cable Car – South Heaven Gate – Bixia Temple – Jade Emperor Peak
- Duration: Hike + Cable Car option: 2-3 hrs to cable car station + 10-min ride.
Describes the natural beauty of the western slope, including streams, valleys, and old rock formations. Not as many historic places, but wonderful views. Going up in a cable car is hard.
Route D: The Cultural Short Cut
- Difficulty: Low
- Path: Red Gate (Hongmen) – Core Temples & Inscriptions – Mid-Heaven Gate – (Cable Car to Summit)
- Duration: 2-3 hours hike to Mid-Heaven Gate + 15-min cable car.
A fair middle ground. From Hongmen to Mid-Heaven Gate, hike the lower half, which is culturally rich. Then, take the cable car to skip the most difficult part of the upper half, which has 18 bends.

During vacations, business hours may be longer. At the stops, you can buy tickets right there. The cable cars are an important link, especially for people taking the Peach Blossom Valley or Tianwai Village paths to get to the summit area quickly.

April to May is a terrific time to feel new again. The weather in May is wonderful for seeing the sunrise, however it rains a lot and the temperature stays between 8Ā°C and 10Ā°C.
The months of June to August are perfect for getting away from the heat. There are a lot of colorful plants and stunning waterfalls in the area. The sunsets in the summer are very lovely.
The best time to go is in the fall, from September to October. The views are great, especially in early October, when the leaves turn golden on the peaks and the sky is bright.
