Unlike the skyscrapers and busy streets in central Shanghai, it features peaceful canals, stone bridges, old streets, and riverside houses, offering a completely different experience of Shanghai.

Day 1 can be arranged the same way as Plan A. It’s always a good idea to spend at least one day on Shanghai’s most iconic attractions.
Day 2: Zhujiajiao Water Town
On the second day, head to Zhujiajiao Water Town. It’s better not to pack too much into your schedule. Make sure you slow down your pace, take a good walk along the canals and old streets, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
Some highlights worth visiting include:
- Fangsheng Bridge: Fangsheng Bridge is one of the most famous ancient bridges and a classic landmark in Zhujiajiao.
- North Street: North Street is one of the main old streets in the town. It’s lined by traditional riverside buildings, local shops, and stalls where you can try some snacks.
- Kezhi Garden: If you are interested in traditional Chinese gardens, it would be a good idea to add Kezhi Garden to your visit and enjoy its classic garden design.

How Long to Spend in Zhujiajiao?
A visit to Zhujiajiao usually takes half a day to most of a day.
It is recommended to leave Shanghai city center in the morning, have lunch in the ancient town, spend the afternoon walking around or taking a boat ride, and then return to Shanghai.
Plan C: Shanghai + Suzhou Day Trip
If you are especially interested in Chinese classical gardens and Jiangnan culture, you can spend your second day visiting Suzhou.
With convenient high-speed train connections between Shanghai and Suzhou, you can easily arrange a day trip without staying overnight in Suzhou.
Day 1: Classic & Modern Shanghai

Day 1 is the same as Plan A; Shanghai’s most iconic attractions surely deserve a full day of exploration. End your day at the Bund to enjoy the beautiful night view on both sides of the Huangpu River.
Day 2: Suzhou Day Trip from Shanghai
Shanghai → High-Speed Train to Suzhou → Lingering Garden → Tiger Hill → Suzhou Silk Museum → Pingjiang Road → Traditional Boat Ride (Optional) → High-Speed Train Back to Shanghai
On the second day, take a high-speed train from Shanghai to Suzhou.

In the afternoon, take a break and walk along Pingjiang Road. With its canals, stone bridges, and traditional streets, it is a great place to experience the atmosphere of Suzhou’s old town and Jiangnan water towns.
If you would like to add a more local experience, then plan a traditional boat ride, which takes about 30–40 minutes. After fully enjoying the scenery from the water, return to Shanghai by high-speed train.
