Option 1: Classic 4-Day Zhangjiajie Itinerary
- Day 1: Arrival +in Wulingyuan
Take a flight or high-speed train to Zhangjiajie. Your hotel will be near the East Gate of Wulingyuan Scenic Area; head directly to the site after arrival. The airport is about 45–60 minutes away by car.
In the evening, take a relaxing walk along Xibu Street. It’s a riverside area featuring traditional Tujia and Miao-style stilt houses, offering you an impressive glimpse of Zhangjiajie’s ethnic culture.
Try to add more experiences to your walk, such as hunting for local snacks, browsing folk handicrafts, and enjoying a drink at a small bar after a day of travel.

In the morning, take a walk along the Jinbian Stream, with the most scenic section covering about 5–7 km. A recommended walking route is:

One special thing about the Jinbian Stream is that it’s not a simple viewpoint where you look down at the mountains. Instead, it actually allows you to walk between towering peaks and admire the sandstone cliffs from the valley floor and feel yourself being part of the environment.
Then visit the famous Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge. The bridge is about 430 meters long and hangs around 300 meters above the valley floor. Walking across its transparent surface delivers an unparalleled excitement you can have in your Zhangjiajie tour.

Though Spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit Zhangjiajie, it is worth visiting year-round. More than just temperature, the overall experience is also influenced by visitor numbers, rainfall, clouds, and visibility at higher elevations. So it’s best to make your itinerary flexible for weather changes.
- March–May (Spring): Fresh green vegetation returns, with more clouds and mist in the mountains, making it a great time for photography.
- July–August (Summer): The scenery is at its greenest, but it is also the busy summer vacation season in China.
- September–November (Autumn): The weather is more stable, visibility is better, and the autumn scenery is beautiful.
- December–February (Winter): Fewer visitors, unique snow views and sea of clouds, but some mountain areas may be affected by weather conditions.
Note:
Don’t only check the weather in Zhangjiajie city. The weather on the mountain peaks can change much faster.
Where to Stay: Wulingyuan vs. City Center
Zhangjiajie can be a rather special case in choosing accommodation during a trip. Instead of staying in just one place, we recommend splitting your stays between Zhangjiajie City and Wulingyuan during this 4-day Zhangjiajie tour.
If your route includes Tianmen Mountain on the first or last day, staying in the city center is more convenient because it is closer to the airport.
For the rest of your trip, staying near Wulingyuan East Gate is the better choice. Accommodation in this area provides easy access to the park, allowing you to make an early entry before 8:00 AM. Besides, you’ll have more dining options nearby in the evening.

- By Air: Flying to Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport is a good choice for travelers from cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. The airport is about 15 minutes from the city center.
- By High-Speed Rail: Zhangjiajie West Railway Station is convenient for travelers coming from cities within a relatively short travel distance, like Chongqing, Changsha, or Guilin. The high-speed train from Changsha to Zhangjiajie takes about 2 hours.
Getting Around Zhangjiajie
