Yunnan 10 Days Itinerary: Kunming, Dali, Lijiang & Shangri-La Route 2026

Yunnan’s vast land deserves a slow and deep exploration, and a Yunnan 10-day itinerary allows you to do that without rushing to different destinations.

A well-planned 10-day itinerary can include 3-5 places with comfort and ease, and it’s most recommended to visit cities like Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-La.

How to Plan a 10-Day Yunnan Itinerary

It is possible to cover up to 5 destinations in your Yunnan 10 Days itinerary, but 3-4 places are more comfortable for most travelers.

Travel Like a Local, Feel No Need to Rush

A well-designed 10-day itinerary focuses on a comfortable traveling pace with only the necessary travel distance. And the point is, at least stay 2 nights in one city.

When traveling to Yunnan, you’ll find every destination is more than a single attraction. It is a collection of landscapes, culture, food, and local experiences. 2 nights ensure you have enough time to fully explore the nearby area.

It is recommended to spend nights in major bases like Dali and Lijiang, so that you can not only travel to the main attractions, but also have time to go on a side-trip to the surrounding area.

Staying night in a city is definitely not enough. Avoid the itinerary that requires you to, for example, arrive in Lijiang at night and leave the next morning. That gives you no time to experience the city.

Group Attractions in the Same Direction

Yunnan has a large total area, and its landscape varies dramatically. So, avoid combining attractions located in different directions on the same day, as too much time will be wasted on transportation.

Take Lijiang as an example again. Traveling northward from Lijiang ancient town, you’ll meet Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Baisha Ancient Town. They create a reasonable route: you can visit the Snow Mountain in the morning and relax in Baisha Ancient Town afterward.

Many visitors also consider adding Lashi Lake, however, it is in another direction, and combining all of these sites in one day will make the schedule tiring.

shangri-la-yunnan

This is one of the most popular routes for a 10-day Yunnan itinerary. It leads you to explore Yunnan’s most iconic natural sites and cultures of Bai, Naxi, and Tibetan ethnic groups.

However, these attractions can be really crowded in peak seasons, and you need to book tickets in advance, such as tickets for the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cable car.

Day 1-2: Kunming: Explore Green Lake Park, Kunming Old Street, and Dounan Flower Market. If time allows, visit the Stone Forest for its unique karst landscape.

Days 3–4: Dali: Take a high-speed train to Dali (about 2 hours). Enjoy Erhai Lake, Xizhou Ancient Town, Bai tie-dye culture, and Dali Ancient Town.

Days 5–7: Lijiang: Travel to Lijiang by high-speed train (about 1.5 hours). Visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Blue Moon Valley, then explore Lijiang Old Town at a slower pace.

Days 8–10: Shangri-La: Travel from Lijiang to Shangri-La. Visit Tiger Leaping Gorge, Songzanlin Monastery, and Dukezong Ancient Town before departure.

This route is designed with the ancient Tea Horse Road as its theme, and it has been covered by media such as The New York Times.

You’ll be led to travel through rainforests, thousand-year-old tea forests, alpine landscapes, and ethnic cultures. If you particularly love history and nature, you’ll find it extremely rewarding and worth a try.

There are also hands-on activities you can take part in, such as tea picking and tea making.

Be mindful that:

This itinerary covers a larger area in Yunnan, and you’ll travel more frequently by domestic flights or private transfers. So, that’ll unavoidably increase expenses for this trip.

Along the way, you’ll experience elevation rises from a few hundred meters in Xishuangbanna to over 3,000 meters in Shangri-La. So give yourself time to adapt to the changing altitude.

Days 1-3: Xishuangbanna: Explore the tropical rainforest and the Bulang and Hani tea culture at the ancient tea forests of Jingmai Mountain.

Days 4-5: Pu’er & Dali: Discover Pu’er’s famous tea culture. Continue to Dali to see Erhai Lake and Bai ethnic traditions.

Days 6-7: Lijiang: Visit Shaxi Ancient Town. Then admire the spectacular Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Days 8-10: Shangri-La: Explore Dukezong Ancient Town and Pudacuo National Park. Depart from Shangri-La Airport.

Yunnan Packing Tips & High-Altitude Travel Advice

What to Wear and Pack for Your 10-Day Yunnan Trip

  • Yunnan has strong UV, so sunscreen and sunglasses are always needed.
  • Kunming, Dali & Lijiang: Light layers are ideal, such as spring/autumn clothes with a thin jacket. Days are mild, but mornings and evenings can feel cool. So bring a warmer coat in winter.
  • Xishuangbanna: Xishuangbanna is warm year-round, so summer clothes are usually enough. Sun protection and mosquito prevention are really important.
  • Shangri-La: Much colder than Lijiang. Temperatures range from 5 to 18°C during the day and below freezing point in winter. Bring a down jacket or windproof coat, thermal layers, gloves, and a hat. Even if you’re traveling in summer, a warm jacket is still necessary due to the dramatic temperature difference.

High Altitude Travel Tips

You don’t need to worry too much about high-altitude sickness. Most travelers have little or no discomfort in Kunming (1,890m), Dali (1,970m), and Lijiang (2,400m).

However, if you’re traveling to places with even higher elevations, there are some tips you can follow.

  • Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (4,500m+ by cable car): Take it slowly, even during short walks, and avoid running or intense activity. It is recommended to buy oxygen in Lijiang city in advance (around RMB 15–25 / USD 2–4 per bottle). It gets more expensive on the mountain.
  • Shangri-La (3,300m): Shangri-La has a rather high altitude, you’ll need extra time to adjust to the environment. Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol, hot showers, and strenuous exercise on the first day. Mild symptoms like dizziness or shortness of breath are common; usually, you’ll get better with proper rest.
