Best Places to Visit in Yunnan in 9 Days

Is 9 Days in Yunnan Enough for First-time Visitors?

A 9-day itinerary is enough to visit many places, but still, we’d recommend focusing on the most iconic routes and not making your itinerary too busy and tight.

Most visitors would opt for Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-La. These destinations together showcase Yunnan’s diverse landscapes, ancient towns, snow mountains, canyons, and rich ethnic cultures.

You may also think of adding Xishuangbanna, Tengchong, or the Yuanyang Rice Terraces to your list, however, we don’t recommend prioritizing them as they require a lot more travel time.

Xishuangbanna lies in southern Yunnan, which is in the opposite direction to cities along the iconic route. Tengchong is better combined with western Yunnan, and Yuanyang Rice Terraces usually require at least two additional days.

How to Travel Around Yunnan Without Renting a Car

How to Travel from Kunming to Dali and Lijiang by Bullet Train?

Can I Do Yunnan Without Renting a Car? Absolutely. Yunnan is really large, so many visitors believe that renting a car to have a self-drive trip is the best choice.

However, that is unnecessary if you follow the iconic routes. High-speed trains, regional railways, domestic flights, and chartered service are enough to travel to most of the popular destinations, and they’re quite easy to manage for a first-time visitor.

If you plan to visit remote villages or less-developed areas, such as traveling between Shaxi Ancient Town and Lijiang, at your own pace, then renting a car becomes necessary.
