Best Time to Visit

  • Best time for decent weather & less crowds: Non-holiday periods in November, December, or January, and late February through March.
  • Best Time for water sports & diving in Sanya: Go any time as long as there’s no typhoon. But if you hate being drenched in sweat, October through April is way more comfortable.
  • Best time for budget travelers: JuneĀ – early SeptemberĀ (off-season with flight and hotel prices dropping remarkably), but just be prepared for greater humidity and frequent downpours.
  • Best time to experience local festival: Sanyuesan Festival (usually falls in March to April).

Time to Avoid

Avoid public holidays, like Chinese New Year (usually falls between late January and early February) and October Golden Week (Oct 1 – Oct 7). It is when Hainan gets very crowded and transport/hotel prices spike. Also try to avoid May to October, especially July – August for heavy rain and September – October for typhoons.

Travel Seasons in Hainan

Peak Season (November – April): Dry & Sunny

November:Ā 22°C – 28°C. The air is really crisp and refreshing. In the mornings and evenings it is cool. During the day it is warm.

December to February: 17°C – 24°C. Dry season. In the north, such as Haikou, the weather can feel damp and cool. While in the south, like Sanya, it remains warm and summer-like.

March: 21°C – 29°C. The temperatures rise quickly and the humidity increases.

April:Ā 24°C – 32°C. Heat and humidity rising, Hainan enters the pre-summer period. Still good for water activities.

  • What to wear: Light summer clothes (e.g. T-shirts, shorts) and a thin cardigan or light jacket in November, March and April. In Sanya, summer outfits with a jacket. In Haikou and the central mountainous areas during January and February, wear summer outfits with sweatshirts or a light down jacket.
  • Recommended activities: Go surfing and diving around Sanya and Wanning; Trekking in Wuzhishan or Yanoda Rainforest; Hot-spring spa.
  • Pros: Good climate (less rain and warmer than most areas of the country); great scenery (gentle sunshine and high visibility underwater).
  • Cons: High prices (especially when it comes to Chinese New Year. The airfares and hotels prices can double); crowded than usual.

Shoulder Season (April – May, September – November): Transition Months

April Ā May:Ā 23°C – 30°C. The weather warms up quickly, rainfall increases significantly in May.

September Ā November:Ā 24°C –Ā 32°C. The rainy season has not completely ended yet, and you may feel hot, but within a reasonable range. October has the most concentrated rainfall. It becomes cool and comfortable from November onward.

  • What to wear: Prepare thin cardigan or sun‑protection shirt for cool mornings, evenings, or air‑conditioned rooms; In Spetember and October, summer clothes are enough. Always bring rain gear.
  • Recommended activities: Enjoy lychee blooming in Haikou. Celebrate ethnic festival Sanyuesan on the third day of the third lunar month. You can see mass parades, riverside stage performances, drone light shows, and bonfire parties during the festival. Go diving.
  • Pros: Pleasant weather (around 22 – 30°C); fewer tourists (just after the Chinese New Year and winter holidays); cost-effective.
  • Cons: Higher temperature; more rain (rainfall increases noticeably from May); humid weather (ground‑floor areas may feel damp and muggy).

Low Season (June – September): Rainy & Typhoon Risk

Temperature averages around 28Ā – 30°C. It feels very hot at noon. Due to the humid air, your sensible temperature will be higher than the actual temperature. The muggy, sticky heat is noticeable. Rainfall is frequent and heavy.

  • What to wear: Short‑sleeve T‑shirts, tank tops, and camisoles (better be quick‑dry, breathable fabrics).
  • Recommended activities: Hainan International Tourism Island Fun Festival (running 30 days with family educational activities, beach fireworks, electronic water parties); water sports (high water temperature and good wave conditions); canyon rafting (one of the most thrilling summer activities).
  • Pros: Super-high cost-effective; less crowds; quieter and more relaxed experience; more fresh fruit and seafood.
  • Cons: Oppressively hot and sticky weather; frequent typhoons (strong rain and low‑pressure systems can cause flight delays, ferry cancellations, closed beaches); risk of seeing more mosquitoes and insects.

Weather Features of Main Hainan Cities

  • Sanya: The city has a tropical monsoon climate, featuring mild temperatures year-round, no harsh cold in winter, and no intense hot in summers. November to March is the most comfortable period. It is great for beach time, swimming, coastal walks and other outdoor activities in warm weather, particularly in the drier months.
  • Haikou: Typically hot and humid. Compared to southern Hainan, the weather here is less predictable. Ā Here, you can enjoy sightseeing, food trips, museum visits, shopping, and other flexible outdoor activities.
  • Wanning: Wanning enjoys tropical climate. The wet season (May – Oct.) is hot, muggy, and overcast. Whereas, the dry season (Nov. – Apr. next year) is warm, windy, partly cloudy and muggy. So the best plan is to go surfing or other outdoor activities in the dry season.
  • Baoting: Located in the inland, it is a great base for nature trips, hot-spring/relaxation style itineraries and lighter outdoor plans.

Insider Tips for Hainan Travel

  • Book flights and hotels early, especially if you travel there from November to April. The period is the high season in Hainan, so popular accommodations and itineraries can be easily sold out.
  • Use high factor sun protection (SPF 50+ sunscreen, wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, sun protective clothing and reapply regularly). Never relax your guard, especially if you are at the seaside or go out on a sunny day.
  • Don’t over schedule your trips with kids or seniors. Try to split each day into several parts, like outdoor activities at morning and indoor rest at afternoon. This may help you acclimatise to heat, sun or rain.
  • Take insect repellent if you are going to rain-forests, wetlands or rural areas. Some natural scenery in Hainan is humid and sees more mosquitoes.
