To travel weather wise, the best time to visit Hainan is the dry season from November to April. Average around 20°C to 25°C, this period is a great time for winter escapes.
Sanya and Haikou, the two major tourist cities in Hainan, have significantly different climates. Sanya enjoys a warm, dry, tropical climate year-round, while Haikou experiences hotter summers, cooler winters, and higher humidity.

Best Time to Visit
- Best time for decent weather & less crowds: Non-holiday periods in November, December, or January, and late February through March.
- Best Time for water sports & diving in Sanya: Go any time as long as thereās no typhoon. But if you hate being drenched in sweat, October through April is way more comfortable.
- Best time for budget travelers: JuneĀ – early SeptemberĀ (off-season with flight and hotel prices dropping remarkably), but just be prepared for greater humidity and frequent downpours.
- Best time to experience local festival: Sanyuesan Festival (usually falls in March to April).
Time to Avoid
Avoid public holidays, like Chinese New Year (usually falls between late January and early February) and October Golden Week (Oct 1 – Oct 7). It is when Hainan gets very crowded and transport/hotel prices spike. Also try to avoid May to October, especially July – August for heavy rain and September – October for typhoons.

Weather Features of Main Hainan Cities
- Sanya: The city has a tropical monsoon climate, featuring mild temperatures year-round, no harsh cold in winter, and no intense hot in summers. November to March is the most comfortable period. It is great for beach time, swimming, coastal walks and other outdoor activities in warm weather, particularly in the drier months.
- Haikou: Typically hot and humid. Compared to southern Hainan, the weather here is less predictable. Ā Here, you can enjoy sightseeing, food trips, museum visits, shopping, and other flexible outdoor activities.
- Wanning: Wanning enjoys tropical climate. The wet season (May – Oct.) is hot, muggy, and overcast. Whereas, the dry season (Nov. – Apr. next year) is warm, windy, partly cloudy and muggy. So the best plan is to go surfing or other outdoor activities in the dry season.
- Baoting: Located in the inland, it is a great base for nature trips, hot-spring/relaxation style itineraries and lighter outdoor plans.
Insider Tips for Hainan Travel

- Use high factor sun protection (SPF 50+ sunscreen, wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, sun protective clothing and reapply regularly). Never relax your guard, especially if you are at the seaside or go out on a sunny day.
- Donāt over schedule your trips with kids or seniors. Try to split each day into several parts, like outdoor activities at morning and indoor rest at afternoon. This may help you acclimatise to heat, sun or rain.
- Take insect repellent if you are going to rain-forests, wetlands or rural areas. Some natural scenery in Hainan is humid and sees more mosquitoes.
