Top Attractions within the Lingshan Scenic Area
Lingshan Grand BuddhaĀ Statue
Lingshan Grand BuddhaĀ is an 88-meter-tall bronze Buddha statue of Sakyamuni, one of the largest giant Buddha statues in China. A total of 725 tons of copper were consumed to construct it. It faces Taihu Lake and is backed by Lingshan Mountain.
When admiring the Buddha, you can pay attention to his hand gestures. His right hand rises with the palm facing outward, called āAbhayamudraā in Buddhism, and his left hand hangs down with the palm facing outward, called āmudra of supreme generosityā. They represent different symbolic meanings. In brief, the right hand will endow you with courage and the left hand will bring you good luck.
To reach the Buddha, tourists must ascend the 216 steps, which are known as “Dengyun Road”.Ā In the middle of these steps, there are 7 huge stone carvings. They record the whole process from the establishment of the Xiangfu Temple to the consecration of the Buddha, forming a historical scroll of Lingshan Mountain. The 216 steps finally lead you to the Lingshan Buddhist Culture Exhibition Hall, which comprehensively showcases the culture of Han, Theravada, and Tibetan Buddhism.
Afterwards, you can head to the annex building. Here, two elevators transport the believers and tourists to the lotus seat. You can touch or “embrace” the huge Buddha’s feet. This is a traditional way for Chinese tourists to pray for peace and health. You can also experience this interesting custom.
The Opulent Lingshan Brahma Palace (梵宫)
Every tourist who has visited Brahma Palace is amazed by its exquisite art. It is not a simple Buddhist architecture, but an ultimate art palace that integrates grotto art, traditional Buddhist elements and modern techniques.
After entering the atrium, look up at the dome. It is composed of thousands of lamps with coloured glaze. The lights constantly change colors and patterns, just like the brilliant starry sky. The scene is extremely dreamy.
On both sides of the main corridor are huge wood carving murals, which tell the story of the spread of Buddhism. The murals are all hand-carved by the masters with abundant details and vivid figures. When walking through, you will feel like reading a three-dimensional historical book.
Besides, there are also splendid murals painted by Dunhuang painters, exquisite reliefs on beams and pillars and various gold decorations. A visual feast can be enjoyed. So the Brahma Palace is also renowned as the āOriental Louvre Museumā.
Another highlight you can not miss is the Auspicious Verse performance in the theater. It vividly tells the story of how Sakyamuni gave up the luxurious life of a prince and eventually achieved enlightenment and became a Buddha. Even if you do not know about Buddhism, you will be moved by the story. The performance times are 10:35, 11:30, 14:00 and 16:00.
Tip: The Auspicious Verse performance is included in the entrance ticket, but due to the limited seats, tourists need to acquire a separate ticket of the performance at the entrance. First come, first served.
Nine Dragons Bathing Sakyamuni (ä¹é¾ē굓)
- Time: weekdays: 10:00, 11:30, 14:45, 16:45; weekends: 10:00, 11:30, 13:00, 14:45, 16:45
It is said that when the Buddha Sakyamuni was born, he could speak and walk. He took seven steps in each of the four directions: east, south, west and north. With each step he took, a lotus flower bloomed on the ground. And there were nine dragons bathing and purifying his body. This scenic spot brings this scene to life with a group of grand,Ā dynamic bronze sculptures: a huge closed lotus in the center of a pond and 9 dragons and 8 phoenixes surrounding it.
When the music “Buddha’s Birthday” begins to play, the lotus petals slowly bloom, and a 7.2-meter-tall golden Buddhist statue rises slowly from the lotus. At the same time, the mouths of nine dragons simultaneously spew water columns dozens of meters high to bathe the statue. And the statue itself will rotate clockwise once.
When the music weakens, the lotus petals will close again. Meanwhile, the 8 phoenix statues around will spit out water from their mouths. It is regarded as holy water that can bring a peaceful life. Remember to go and get some water. Watching the performance is definitely one of the top things to do in Wuxi.
Tips: The best viewing positions are the front or side views. You can clearly see the opening and closing of the lotus and the full view of the Buddha statue. And it is better to arrive 30 minutes earlier to secure a good spot.
Five Mudra MandalaĀ (äŗå°åå)
Five Mudra MandalaĀ is anĀ exquisite and magnificent building in the Tibetan Buddhist style. Its rooftop is a 1:1 replica of the gilded roof of the Potala Palace. Together with the white walls, red window lattices and colorful prayer flags, a serene traditional Tibetan architecture is constructed. It takes you from a water town in South China to the snow-capped plateau instantly.Ā While the scenic areaĀ is primarily dedicated to Han Buddhism, this Tibetan-styleĀ building is very unique and eye-catching.
Entering the building is like entering a Tibetan culture museum, where several Tibetan traditional handicrafts gather, like Thangka, color paintings, wood carvings, murals, etc. Around the building, there are several huge golden prayer wheels. Just perform as the pilgrims do, gently turn the wheel clockwise to pray for yourself.
Buddha’s Hand Square (ä½ę广åŗ)
On this square, the “replicated right hand” ofĀ Lingshan Grand Buddha stands. In both shape and size, it is an exact replica of the statue’s original right hand.Ā The total height is about 11.7 meters, as high asĀ a three-story building and the width is 5.5 meters. Even the single finger measures 1 meter across. Thus, it is also renowned as āThe First Palm in the worldā.
It is said that touching the hand will bring good fortune, safety and health. Almost all tourists will patiently queue for a chance to receiveĀ this blessing.Ā You can also join them and capture the moment.
