History of Tengwang Pavilion

The construction of Tengwang Pavilion was order by Tengwang Li Yuanying, brother of the Tang Emperor Taizong in 653. It was built as an entertainment venue for Tengwang. It overlooks the Ganjiang River and is praised by many for its magnificent view.

Because it was historically built with brick and wood, Tengwang Pavilion was prone to the destruction of fire and war. It has since been destroyed 28 times. What you see today on your Jiangxi tour was rebuilt in the 1980s.

What to See and Do at Tengwang Pavilion

1. Marvelous Architecture

Tengwang Pavilion is the main structure in the scenic area, tall at 57.5 meters (188.6 feet). Its base is a 12-meter-high pedestal that resembles the ancient city wall. From a distance, the main pavilion appears to only have three levels, but there are in fact seven levels inside. The overall architectural style takes inspiration from the Song style.

2. Admire the Arts and Poetry

Aside from its entertainment function, the Tengwang Pavilion was also the storage of many classics and historical texts. In a sense, it is an ancient library. It was once the venue for ministers and literati to write poems and admire the lights. Today, you’ll find a collection of artworks on display inside the pavilion.

Speaking of Tengwang Pavilion, most native Chinese speakers would think of the great Tang poet Wang Bo and his masterpiece “Tengwang Ge Xu.” This poem became so widely known, it is handwritten by Su Shi (another one of the greatest ancient Chinese poets), carved onto copper plates, and displayed on the fifth floor of the tower.

Other than Wang Bo, famous poets like Wang Zhongshu, Wang Xu, and Han Yu have all witnessed the view standing upon Tengwang Pavilion and left behind beautiful verses for later generations.

The best way to take in the view and get to know the city at night is by boarding a night cruise by Tengwang Pavilion.

They re-enact their famous anecdotes and stories that took place at Tengwang Pavilion, accompanying traditional music and dances.

When is the Best Time to Visit
