Taoism of Longhu Mountain

Why Longhu Mountain is So Important in Chinese Taoism

Longhu Mountain is the birthplace of Chinese Taoism. The founder of Taoism, Zhang Daoli, achieved enlightenment here. It is said that in the Eastern Han Dynasty, Zhang Daoli, along with his disciple Wang Chang, went to Longhu Mountain to build a hut and refine elixirs here. When the elixirs were complete, the dragon and tiger appeared. It is also the source of its name. So the mountain is considered as the sacred land for Taoism.

It is also the ancestral chamber of the Zhengyi sect of Taoism. To this day, the descendants of Zhang Daoli have been living here for a total of 36 generations over a period of more than 1,900 years. It has been the inheritance center for Taoist culture.

Besides, emperors of several dynasties bestowed titles upon it and offered support to build the temples. Together with the Confucius family, they are the two spiritual pillars of Chinese culture.

Other than that, Seeking the Dream of Longhu Mountain is China’s first large-scale performance that takes nature as its stage, amongst the mountains and rivers. You’ll see actors in traditional costumes putting on a play about a story that takes place in Longhu Mountain.

Best Time to Visit

The scenery of Longhu Mountain varies a lot in the four seasons, so it is better to choose according to your own preferences. Spring and autumn both offer pleasant weather and are suitable for hiking and photography. In the two seasons, blooming flowers and red leaves are all over the mountain, respectively. In summer, the lush and green trees and woods and Luxi River make it an ideal summer resort. But an umbrella should be taken in case of sudden rainfall. If you want to avoid crowds, winter can be the best choice. During this time, the outline of the mountain and rock landscape is clearer and the sea of clouds appears occasionally. But some outdoor projects may be closed due to the weather.
