Getting to & Traveling around Shenzhen
International Flight
There are many direct flights to Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport from major cities across Asia, Europe, and North America. If a nonstop option isn’t available from your departure point, you can fly to Hong Kong and then get to Shenzhen by high-speed train, ferry, or other vehicles.
Departure from Hong Kong
Here are three ways of travelling between Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
- Highly Recommended: High-speed Trains
Trains run frequently and take only 18 minutes from West Kowloon Station to Shenzhen North Station. Tickets can be booked easily in advance on the 12306 app.
- Ferry
Taking ferry is a good choice if your hotel is near Shekou Port or within Nanshan District. The trip takes about one hour from Hong Kong International Airport to Shekou Port.
- Rent a Private Car
If you need a door-to-door service, you can book a private cross-border car via Didi or Caocao. Your driver will meet you at your Hong Kong address, handle the border formalities, and take you directly to your hotel in Shenzhen.
Navigating Shenzhen via Public Transport
Traveling around Shenzhen is easy, thanks to a highly efficient public transport network with clear bilingual signs and Chinese-English announcements. For most families, the metro is highly recommended because its routes cover most of the attractions on your itinerary.
Tips:
- Obtain a free Shenzhen Tong ride code on Alipay so you can pass the gates by swiping your smartphone.
- Check the metro’s operating hours and peak hours (usually 7:00-9:00 a.m.and 5:00-7:00 p.m.), and try to plan your outings outside of peak hours.
For specific needs, taxis and Didi are good options, especially if the kids are tired after a long day of exploring.
Best Time of Year to Visit Shenzhen for Family Outdoor Activities
With its mild subtropical climate, Shenzhen is suitable for traveling all year round. For the most comfortable experience, the best time to visit Shenzhen is between October and April, when temperatures are between 20 and 28°C (68–82°F), and the weather is ideal for outdoor activities and city walks.
If you plan a visit in summer, water parks are waiting for your family. You can schedule visits to indoor attractions during midday to avoid the high temperatures of around 30°C (86°F).
Winter is a good time to participate in folk activities. Wherever the calendar lands, Shenzhen knows how to welcome families with open arms.

Day Trips from Shenzhen for Families

Hong Kong Disneyland via the High-Speed Train
A day trip to Hong Kong Disneyland from Shenzhen is wonderful for family. Here are the traffic routes, ticket information, and the must-do attractions for you.
Traffic Routes
- Take the highspeed train: from Futian Station to West Kowloon Station
- After clearing immigration, take the metro: walk indoors to Austin Station, then ride the Tuen Ma Line to Nam Cheong, switch to the Tung Chung Line to Sunny Bay, and finally hop on the Disneyland Resort Line straight to the park gates.
Tips: Alipay works for both the train ticket (book on the 12306 App) and the MTR fare gates, so you can leave the Octopus card at home.
Visiting Information:
- Operating hours: 10:30-20:00 (Public holiday: 10:00-21:00)
- Ticket price: HKD699 ($ 90)/adult, children under 12 years old enjoy 30% discount
- Must-do rides for families: Hyperspace Mountain and the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh should top your list. Mystic Manor, A Small World, Mickey’s PhilharMagic, the classic spins of Cinderella Carousel Dumbo, and the Flying Elephant are popular with younger children.
Tips:
- Download the official Hong Kong Disneyland App before you go, so you can check waiting times, show schedules, and attraction bookings in real-time.
- Bring an empty water bottle with you, free drinking water fountains are scattered through the park。
- If your budget allows, the Early Entry Pass is worth every dollar: for HKD 199 per person (about US $25), you can step through the gates one hour before the official opening, beating the crowds to the headline rides.
Dapeng Fortress & Beach (History & sand play)
Founded in 1394, this well-preserved coastal fortress once guarded the sea approaches to the Pearl River Delta — and it gave Shenzhen its nickname, “Peng City” (literally “Roc City”). Today you can wander through the commanding Zhenwei General’s Residence, the atmospheric Tianhou Temple, and two small but absorbing museums dedicated to Dapeng’s history and coastal defence.
Besides the historical sites, Judiao Beach and Astronomical Observatory are also worth visiting. Judiao Beach is a 1,000-metre crescent of powder-soft white sand lapped by water so clear that locals call it the “Crystal Sea.” At the entrance, there’s a free children’s playground, where kids can play in the sand.
Astronomical Observatory is a 30-minute drive away. Step onto its viewing platform and the South China Sea stretches out beneath you in endless blues and greens. Wander the cliffhugging boardwalk nearby, and enjoy the golden sunset that paints the sea and sky.
- How to get to: Take Bus E11 to Dapeng Center and then transfer M274 to Judiao Beach
- Tips
- The coastal sun is stronger than it feels; slather the kids in waterproof sunscreen, and pop on a sun hat.
- Pack a spare set of clothes and a towel for each child. A quick towel off and change after playing in the water keeps away cold.
- Play it safe at the seaside: always hold little hands in the shallows, and never let kids wander alone near deep water or slippery rocks.
