5 Days Classic Xiamen and Fujian Tulou Tour

Day-by-day Itinerary

1. Day 1: Arrival in Xiamen

   Welcome to Xiamen, a charming coastal city known as 'Egret Island'! Upon your arrival, you will be greeted by your private driver at the airport or train station. Then he will transfer you to your hotel in downtown area. After checking in, take some time to relax.

   In the afternoon, you can explore Xiamen at your own pace. We recommend starting your Xiamen tour with a visit to Zhongshan Road. It is an old commercial street in Xiamen, such as Manhattan in New York, Ginza in Tokyo, and Central in Hong Kong.

   You will see preserved old blocks that showcase the historical style, with lots of historical sites such as celebrity residences and Nanyang architecture. The dazzling array of various Fujian snacks and ancient Nanyin are the characteristics of this place. Strolling along the street, browse shops, and taste local snacks.

2. Day 2: Nanjing Tulou Tour
   Explore Ancient Tulou Representative - Tianluokeng

   After breakfast at the hotel, drive for 3 hours to Nanjing Tulou, located in a rural area of Fujian Province. Nanjing Tulou is an important representative of residential architecture in Fujian, with various shapes including oval, crescent, eight trigrams, apron, etc., in addition to the common circular and square shapes.

   Today you will be led to visit the calling card of Nanjing Tulou - Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster, which was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008. It is a building group of three circles, a square and an oval built in accordance with the principles of the five elements of metal, wood, water, fire and earth in Chinese Fengshui. It is a landmark building of Fujian Tulou.

   

   You can see the architectural marvels such as Yuchang Building, the oldest and largest circular tulou with a history of 700 years. Some of the pillars inside the building have been tilted, with a maximum tilt of 15 degrees, but have remained standing after multiple earthquakes.

   Continuing your Tulou tour, you will explore Taxia Village. It is a secluded Hakka village, suitable for hiking. The whole village is surrounded by mountains, and a stream runs through it, like a fairyland on earth. There are many small restaurants where you can enjoy authentic local cuisine for dinner. We stay overnight at the hotel in Taxia Village.

3. Day 3: Yongding Tulou Tour
   Marvel at the Hongkeng Tulou for Its Historical and Architectural Significance

   After breakfast, say good bye to Taxia Village and head to Yongding Tulou, which is another area known for its amazing Tulou buildings. We mainly visit the Hongkeng Tulou Cluster, a masterpiece of Fujian Tulou. It is famous for its long history, unique style, large scale, exquisite structure and complete functions, and is known as a shining pearl of oriental civilization. You will see the architectural marvels such as Zhencheng Building, Fuyu Building, and Rusheng Building.

   

   After the tour, we drive to Chuxi Tulou Cluster, the most primitive and most Hakka-characteristic tulou clusters in Yongding. Your tour guide will take you to visit the Jiqing Building, one of the oldest Fujian tulous in the world. The rooms, stairs and partitions in the Jiqing building are all made of Chinese fir. The whole tulou does not use a nail, and the connection between the woods is all hollow tenon.

   

   To fully appreciate the beauty of the Chuxi Tulou complex, you can hike to the viewpoint of north mountain, where you can see the panoramic view of the entire complex. After taking some wonderful pictures, you will be escorted back to your hotel in Xiamen.

4. Day 4: Xiamen Coastal Exploration
   Relax on Gulangyu While Visiting Diverse Architecture and Scenic Spots

   After breakfast, you will take a coastal exploration of Xiamen. Your first destination is Huandao Road. Circling Gulangyu Island in Xiamen, it is famous for its spectacular coastline and roadside scenery. Relax and enjoy the island view. This place is great for taking a leisurely walk or a bike ride.

   Next, you will visit the South Putuo Temple, located next to Xiamen University. It is a well-known Buddhist temple in southern Fujian and even throughout the country, and also a very popular place for praying.

   

   In the afternoon, take a short 20-minute ferry ride to Gulangyu Island. Gulangyu is a peaceful and beautiful small island, and with its unique scenery, it has become a tourism card for Xiamen. There are attractions on the island such as Sunlight Rock, Shuzhuang Garden, and Piano Museum.

   

   Climbing up Sunlight Rock, you can overlook the entire island scenery. In addition, Gulangyu Island also features the Minnan style and the 19th-century European style National Consulate. Because of these diverse styles of architecture, they are also known as the International Architecture Expo. After your visits, take the ferry back to Xiamen downtown.

5. Day 5: Departure from Xiamen

   After breakfast, enjoy your leisure morning at your hotel. At the designated time, your driver will pick you up at the lobby and then escort you to the airport/train station for your onward journey to your next destination or back home. Your 5-day Xiamen tour with tulou ends here.
