So join us on this 8-day Yunnan photography tour and we’ll take you to explore some of the most worth-recording sites in Yunnan. After a warm welcome in Kunming, we’ll go traightly to admire the magnificent Dongchuan Red Land. Here, sunlight’s magic will be sensed in an incredibly vivid way, as it sparys different tones of red on the vast scenery. Then, get your camera ready to record the stunning shapes of strange stones in Stone Forest.
Later, we’ll travel to the rice terraces in Yuanyang. While the natural views are still amazing, the history and customs of the Hani ethnic group may get you feel more touched and impressed. - Day 1: Arrival in KunmingExperience the Vivid Local Life
Welcome to Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province. Upon arrival, the guide and driver will take you to the hotel for check-in.
Then move to Green Lake Park, located in the center of the city. And indeed, it serves as a charming urban oasis, and many people would like to come here to relax in the serene water views. It is a window into local life, and you may get to see residents dancing, practicing Tai Chi, playing chess, and enjoying slow-paced daily routines. As for visitors, you can wander through traditional-style pavilions and catch a glimpse of the city’s chilling vibe. The park’s architecture also adds a historic touch to the natural surroundings.

Start today’s Yunnan photography tour from Dongchuan Red Land, 160 kilometers from Kunming. The nearly 100-mile-square area is the most typical and distinctive red soil on the Yunnan plateau. It forms a spectacular view together with blue sky, white clouds and variable light. You can take amazing photos from different angles.
Dongchuan Red Land The journey will take you to various scenic spots. First come to Shuipingzi, where magnificent rice terraces are spread out in the mountains. With the change of seasons, the terraces will show different colors. Obverse the thousand-year-old Ancient Tree, with the huge crown and green leaves. The tree witnessed the historical changes of Dongchuan Red Land over the past thousand years.
Also capture the stunning sunset at Luoxiagou Valley. The best place to take photos is on the viewing trestle, where you can overlook the entire valley and enjoy the scene of the sunlight coloring the entire valley in gold.
- Day 3: Dongchuan Red Land to KunmingCapture More Beautiful Views of the Red Land
In the morning, continue your Dongchuan Red Land photography tour. Wake up early to watch the sunrise at Damakan. Damakan is considered the best viewpoint in the entire Red Land area for capturing sunrise scenes. As the first rays of light spread across the terraced fields, the landscape shifts from deep shadows to brilliant layers of red, orange, and gold. From the viewing deck, you can take sweeping shots of the rolling hills, patchwork farmland, and distant mountains. The ever-changing clouds and mist also add dramatic atmosphere, making the early morning light especially rewarding for photographers. Stand on a viewing platform to overlook the entire red lands. Take pictures of the distinctive view created by the rice terraces and the mountains in the distance.
Sunrise of Damakan Immerse yourself in other attractions in Dongchuan Red Land, including Jinxiu Garden, Qicai Slope and Wafangliangzi. Capture the colorful scenery while talking with the locals to know about their customs and culture.
In the afternoon, drive back to Kunming. The remaining time is yours to relax or explore the city.
Choose to visit the Flower and Bird Market, wander through the streets to taste local dishes like crossing the bridge rice noodles and steam pot chicken (optional).
- Day 4: Yunnan's Stone ForestExplore the Stone Art Garden
After breakfast, drive for two hours to reach Stone Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring karst formations. This vast limestone landscape took millions of years to form, creating forests of stone pillars, spires, and natural sculptures that resemble animals, towers, and fortress-like walls. As you walk along the network of paths and bridges, you’ll find narrow passages, hidden pools, and dramatic cliffs rising overhead. The Dashilin area showcases densely clustered stone peaks, while Xiaoshilin offers quieter trails with open lawns and small ponds. The site is large and involves considerable walking, so wearing comfortable, supportive sneakers is highly recommended for a pleasant experience.
Kunming Stone Forest If time permits, you will have opportunity to visit Nuohei Village, a traditional Sani ethnic minority village. Enjoy folk songs and dances to understand their culture and taste local specialties.
- Day 5: Shilin County to YuanyangWitness the Stunning Terraces Sunset
In the morning, drive 3 hours to Yuanyang for your Yuanyang Rice Terrace tour. The rice terraces, created by generations of Hani people, are spectacular as they follow each other in layers according to the terrain. This site mainly consists of 4 parts: Bada Rice Terrace, Laohuzui Rice Terrace, Duoyishu Rice Terrace, and Qingkou Rice Terrace.
Arrive in the late afternoon and watch the breathtaking sunset at Laohuzui Rice Terrace, one of the most dramatic viewpoints in Yuanyang. As the sun descends, the terraces transform into a mosaic of fiery colors, with the water-filled paddies reflecting shades of gold, orange, and red. The steep slopes and layered curves create a dynamic composition that is especially stunning through a camera lens. Depending on cloud patterns, you may also witness soft mist rising through the valley, adding depth to the scenery with the terraces shining golden in the sunlight.
Yuanyang Rice Terraces - Day 6: Yuanyang HighlightsMarvel at the Views of Rice Terraces and Experience Hani Culture.
Get up early and drive to Duoyishu Village to see the beautiful sunrise at Duoyishu Rice Terrace. Known as the “most beautiful sunrise terrace” in Yuanyang, Duoyishu has amazed countless people with its serene and atmospheric morning scene. As the sun rises, hundreds of terraced fields will illuminate under the golden sun light. And when the paddies got filled with water, then they’ll turn into mirrors that can reflect the sky in a dreamlike war. Climb up to the viewpoint can give you better angle for photos.
Admire the Amazing Sunrise View of Duoyishu Rice Terrace After breakfast, head to the Ethnic Market & Bazaar in Yuanyang. There are fresh vegetables and fruits, beautiful handicrafts and costumes. Take photos of the decorations of various ethnic groups such as Hani, Yi, Miao and Dai. Buy souvenirs and taste local delicacies such as rice cakes, sticky rice or preserved ham. You will immerse yourself in the vibrant local life.
In the afternoon, move to Qingkou Hani Ethnic Village. Obverse the magnificent rice terrace scenery and living facilities such as Hani mushroom houses. Along the stone path of the village, feel the perfect combination of human activities and natural ecology.
Afterwards, explore the Bada Rice Terrace, the best location to watch the sunset. The terraces here are vast and the views are stunning. As the sun sets, the terraces shimmer in the setting sun, creating a breathtaking view. Capture beautiful views of the rice terraces from different angles.

- Day 7: Yuanyang to JianshuiVisit the Ancient City with the Rich Culture and History
Today, we’ll drive to Jianshui County (3 hours). Upon arrival, your first stop would be Jianshui Ancient Town, and here you can see a large number of well-preserved architecture and scenic historical quarters. The landmark Chaoyang Tower stands as the symbol of the town—climb to the top for panoramic views of the ancient streets below. The Confucius Temple, one of the largest of its kind in southern China, offers insight into traditional Confucian culture and houses a solemn statue of Confucius.
Stroll through the Zhu Family Garden, a grand residential complex built during the Qing Dynasty. The garden features elegant courtyards, winding corridors, carved wooden windows, and peaceful ponds surrounded by pavilions. Its layout showcases classic southern Yunnan architectural style, blending Han and local cultural elements. As you wander, you’ll feel the refined lifestyle of the wealthy Zhu family who once lived here. Also visit local workshops to see the making of Jianshui’s famous products like purple pottery, tofu, and rice wine.

After breakfast, continue your Jianshui exploration tour from Double Dragon Bridge. Also known as the “17-hole Bridge,” this impressive structure dates back to the Qing Dynasty. It stretches gracefully across the confluence of two rivers. Its elegant arches create perfect reflections in the water, calm and beautiful, making it a favorite photography spot. The central pavilion adds a traditional architectural touch, offering a place to pause and enjoy the scenery. From the bridge, you can capture lush riverbanks, distant mountain silhouettes, and the calm flowing water—a peaceful contrast to the ancient town’s busy streets.
Double Dragon Bridge Finally, move to Tuanshan Village, preserving a large number of buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties. There are traditional courtyards of Han, soil palm rooms of Yi and buildings combining Han and Yi. Explore the typical features of residential houses in southern Yunnan.
