Why Yunnan Is the Best Hiking Destination in China?

  • Unparalleled natural landscape diversity.Yunnan has almost condensed all natural landscapes of China. Thanks to the stereoscopic topography and climate, tropical rainforests, terraced fields, canyons, plateau lakes, snow mountains, glaciers, and alpine meadows coexist in the same province.
  • Enchanting ethnic flavors. Many routes pass through the homelands of long-standing ethnic groupsĀ such as the Tibetan, Naxi, Yi, Lisu, and Dulong. Hiking is the process of experiencing their living cultures.
  • Remnants of Ancient Tea Horse Road. Many Yunan hiking trails are the remained sections of Ancient Tea Horse Road. A walk there can give you more insights into ancient trade in China’s southwest region.
  • Mature and graded route system catering to all levels. The hiking routes in YunnanĀ are beginner-friendly, but still offer ultimate challenges to veteran hikers.
  • Easy accessibility.Lijiang and Shangri-La are the base camps for efficient transport networks.
  • Comprehensive logistic support.Mature inn system supporting luggage storage, and guide services allow hikers to travel light and easily.

Best Time to HikeĀ in Yunnan

The first choice is from late September to November. The temperature is very pleasant, rainfall is low, and visibility is high. All these factors contribute to a comfortable hiking tour in Yunnan. Spring (March to May) is also a nice idea to appreciate the gorgeous flowers. Summer and winter are not that ideal, but they still offer special treats.

Spring (Mar-May): Flowers & Clear Trails

As the temperature gradually rises, all living things come back to life in spring. Enthusiastic hikers cant’ wait to start a trek. Starting from April, azaleas bloom from low altitude to high altitude and hit their peak in May and June, creating a stunning scene. But rainy season may approach at the end of May, and the weather may be unpredictable with occasional showers, so it’s necessary to prepare rainproof equipment.

Summer (Jun-Aug): Green But Rainy

Summer is the rainy season in Yunnan. The perceived temperature varies greatly with altitude, but it’s overall cool and comfortable. You can see lush green everywhere adorned by colorful wildflowers. However, frequent rainfall increases the risk of geological disasters like landslides and rockfalls. The many clouds and mist make it difficult to see the real face of snow-capped mountains. While you should avoid going to Nujiang Canyon and Tiger Leaping Gorge at this time, light hiking around Lijiang, Dali or alpine grasslands in Shangri-La is not much affected.

Autumn (Sep-Nov): Best Hiking Season

In autumn, the rainy season ends, followed by clear skies and cooler climate. The weather is most stable during this time, so you don’t worry about potential interruption caused by sudden storms. The autumn scenery is very picturesque. Forests are dyed with colorful hues. The extremely high visibility is very favorable to admire the snow mountains and starry skies. You have a great chance to see Meili Snow Mountain enveloped by golden sunlight.

Winter (Dec-Feb): Snow Scenery for Hardcore Hikers

Yunnan winter is overall dry, sunny and relatively cold. Large snowpack in high-altitude areas makes hiking difficult, but some experienced hikers may still choose this period to test their willpower and physical fitness. Winter is the irrigation season of Yuanyang Terraces, thus providing a good opportunity for photography and hiking. Light hiking in the tropical rainforest of Xishuangbanna is also recommended because it’s as warm as summer.

Hiking Routes in Yunnan – Lijiang Hiking Tours
