Weather in Yunnan in July
July is a pleasant month in Yunnan. Temperatures normally range from 18°C to 25°C (64°F–77°F).
July falls within the rainy season, and many destinations may see rainfall on around 20 days throughout the month. However, there is no need to worry too much as the weather changes every minute. Besides, most rain comes in the form of brief showers rather than all-day downpours.
Rainstorms often arrive suddenly and pass just as quickly. After a shower, clouds frequently clear to reveal Yunnan’s iconic blue skies again. The abundant rainfall nourishes the plateau’s forests and grasslands, so that July always has the lush and refreshing picture.
Daylight hours are long, you may experience about 13 hours of daylight each day. Sunrise is around 6:30 a.m., and sunset is around 8:00 p.m., so enjoy your abundant time for sightseeing. Because of frequent clouds and rain, actual sunshine averages about five hours per day.
Be mindful that, even on cloudy days, ultraviolet radiation on the Yunnan Plateau remains strong, so do get your proper sun protection. >>See more details about Yunnan Weather.

What to Wear
Temperatures in Yunnan can vary significantly throughout the day, so it would be practical to go for layered clothing. You can pack some summer outfits, which will be suitable for most destinations, but still, bring a light jacket or sun-protective outer layer. Mornings, evenings, and high-altitude areas such as Shangri-La will be cool. Comfortable waterproof shoes are also a good idea.
Sun and Rain Protection
UV levels are intense year-round on the plateau. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are essential. Since July is part of the rainy season, carrying a compact umbrella is also highly recommended.

What to Do About Altitude Sickness
Yunnan has some high-elevation areas, mainly found around Lijiang (about 2,400 meters / 7,874 feet), Shangri-La (about 3,300 meters / 10,827 feet), and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (up to 4,680 meters / 15,354 feet).
To reduce the risk of altitude sickness, it is best to follow a gradual route such as:
Kunming → Dali → Lijiang → Shangri-La
Xishuangbanna is a tropical lowland destination and is usually visited separately rather than combined with the high-altitude circuit.
If you have experienced altitude sickness before, consider bringing preventive medication and portable oxygen.
Preventive Measures
- On your first day in Lijiang or Shangri-La, avoid bathing, drinking alcohol, and strenuous physical activity (not even jogging or running).
- Ascend gradually rather than rushing to higher elevations. Give your body some time to adapt.
- Travelers with asthma or serious heart or lung conditions should carefully assess whether to visit Shangri-La or areas above 4,500 meters around Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
Mild altitude sickness often gets better naturally within 24 to 48 hours. However, if symptoms worsen, don’t hesitate to descend to a lower elevation as soon as possible.
Situation |
Recommended Action |
Mild symptoms |
Stop physical activity, rest, use oxygen (about 2 liters per minute), and take ibuprofen for headaches if needed. |
Symptoms persist or worsen |
Descend immediately to an area at least 300–500 meters lower in elevation. This is the most effective treatment. |
Severe symptoms such as breathing difficulties or confusion |
Seek medical attention immediately or call emergency services (120). |
