Written by Wendy Mo |

One thing interesting about Yunnan is that just when you think you’ve explored all of its highlights, there will always be another destination that suddenly catches your eye with its irresistible charm, and this time, the destination should be Yanjin: the narrowest town on the planet.

It stretches along a thin strip of land between steep cliffs and a rushing river (Guan River 关河). At its tightest point, the entire city is barely 30 meters wide. This unique geographical formation has shaped the town’s unique identity: one river, one main road, and layers of buildings clinging to the mountainsides.

What Makes Yanjin Famous?

Yanjin’s unique appearance, including its steep cliffs, colorfully painted buildings, and a river slicing through the middle, has made it popular online. Photos with stunning visual effect often leave people wondering if the city is real, thus turning it into a viral curiosity.

“The Narrowest City in China”

One thing that Yanjin County is best known for is its extreme geography. The town is built inside a steep canyon, and buildings are basically clinging to the cliff. So you can imagine how limited the town’s available land is. At its narrowest point, the town is only about 30 meters wide. However, this unusual setting is also why it’s often called “the narrowest city in China” and even in the world.

A One-Line Layout

Unlike most cities that spread outward, Yanjin stretches along the river in a straight line. So, one special scene you can notice here is that there’s one single river running through the center, with one main road and tightly packed buildings on either side. There’s no traffic light! And if you look from above, Yanjin town looks just like a thin ribbon cutting through the mountains.

Cliffside and Stilted Architecture

With so little flat land, buildings are designed to adapt. Some stand on stilts above the riverbanks, while others are built directly into the cliffs. The result is a dense, vertical cityscape that feels both compact and dramatic.

How Long to Stay in Yanjin

Recommended Stay:

2 days is ideal for a full visit to Yanjin, and the main reason is the transportation. Since it takes a long time for you to travel to Yanjin, especially by train or bus, one day may not be enough for both travel and sightseeing. With 2 days, you’ll have enough time to experience Yanjin’s unique geography and the relaxed pace of life without feeling rushed.

1 day: If you’re coming from Zhaotong or traveling by self-drive, then it is possible to visit Yanjin in one day. However, this would require an early start and some detailed planning to make the most of your time. A morning arrival gives you enough hours to explore the main attractions, however, it is unavoidable to feel more rushed.

Worth a Special Trip vs. Passing Through:

Is Yanjin Worth Visiting? Sure! Yanjin County is worth it for its one-of-a-kind canyon city views and unique charm. Locals are friendly here, and you can truly immerse yourself in the “small-town” vibe. However, you many wonder whether you should make it one of your major stops, here are some suggestions I can give you:

Special Trip: Yanjin offers a unique experience for those who appreciate unusual landscapes. If you’re tired of visiting attractions with large crowds and looking for something off-the-beaten-path, it’s definitely worth dedicating a day or two.

Passing Through: However, if you’re not that drawn to the small-town vibe or unique landscape and prefer somewhere much easier to go, then Ynajin may not be a suitable choice for you.

If you’re already in the Yunnan or Sichuan region and passing by, then it can be a great stop for a day, but it’s not quite necessary for a dedicated trip.
