The Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base is equipped with well-developed facilities and full English guidance.
Key areas to visit are adult panda enclosures, cub nurseries, red panda zones, panda science exhibition halls, and the panda museum. The last two spots are set to help visitors learn about world-leading breeding and wildlife conservation achievements.
Adult Pandas and Famous Stars
The park is home to over 100 giant pandas, among which famous stars like Huahua and He Ye attract most visitors. Huahua usually spends less time outdoors during the day and rests indoors in the afternoon. So if you want to see her active, try to visit early in the morning.
Panda Age Zones & Baby Pandas
The base houses juvenile panda villas and newborn cub areas, organized by age group. During the breeding season from July to September, there are chances to see newborn panda cubs. Visiting in other periods is also fun, as you can observe playful young pandas over six months old.
Red Panda Area
After catching the adorable moment of giant pandas, you may also explore the separate red panda viewing area.
A little hint is that giant pandas and red pandas are completely different species: giant pandas are large with black-and-white fur, while red pandas are smaller with reddish-brown coats. The two zones are clearly separated for easy viewing.
Best Time to Visit Chengdu Panda Base
The best time to visit the panda base is March–May and September–November. The weather in Chengdu and the surrounding areas is comfortable and not too hot or humid. Pandas are more active outdoors, so it’ll be easy for you to take photos of them climbing trees and eating.
Best Time to See Baby Panda Season
If you are particularly interested in newborn cubs, visit between July and September. This is the main breeding season, when tiny panda cubs may be seen in the nursery areas. However, July to September is the peak of Chengdu’s summer, with hot and humid weather. In this period, pandas often stay indoors during midday.
Low Season (Less Recommended)
It is generally not recommended to visit during June–August (summer) or December–February (winter). In summer, the heat makes pandas less active, and they usually stay in air-conditioned rooms. In winter, cold and damp weather also reduces outdoor activity time, so your viewing experience won’t be as pleasant as expected.
Best Time of Day
9:00–11:30 AM is generally the busiest period of the base. Popular areas like Huahua’s enclosure and the baby panda house will be full of crowds. The best strategy is to arrive right at opening time (around 7:30 AM) when crowds are minimal, while pandas are also at their most active.
From opening until around 11:00 AM, pandas are usually energetic. It’s time for them to eat, climb, and play. After lunch, they tend to rest indoors due to the heat. Afternoons are quieter with fewer visitors, which is good, but pandas are often sleepy during this time.
Weekends and holidays are much more crowded, and queues can be really long at popular viewing spots. If time allows, plan your visit on weekdays. If you just want a quick visit focusing on famous pandas, about 2 hours is enough. A slower-paced exploration may take half a day.
How to Get to the Chengdu Panda Breeding Base
The panda base is located in the northern suburbs of Chengdu, about 10 km from Tianfu Square and Chunxi Road. A one-way trip from the city center usually takes 30–60 minutes, however, heavy traffic during rush hours and weekends greatly extends the time you spend on the road.
Taxi & Ride-Hailing (Most Recommended):
Taking a taxi or ride-hailing service (such as Didi, which works basically the same way as Uber) is the easiest option. A ride from Chunxi Road or Tianfu Square usually costs you 30–40 RMB ($4–6 USD) during normal hours. During rush hour, fares can rise to 50–60 RMB ($7–9 USD).

Metro + Shuttle (Budget Option):
There is no direct metro line taking you to the panda base entrance. The nearest station is Panda Avenue Station on Line 3. After arriving there, you need to take a shuttle bus or taxi to reach the park entrance.
How to Book Tickets for Chengdu Panda Base
Before proceeding to ticket booking procedures, one important thing to remember is that the ticket price is the same for both domestic and international visitors.
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes. That’s definitely necessary, especially if your journey is planned in peak seasons. It helps you secure your preferred entry time, and it saves waiting time at the entrance. It’s your first step to an overall smooth visit to the panda base.
Can tickets only be booked online? Is on-site purchase possible?
On-site purchase is possible, while most visitors choose to book online.
The park uses a real-name reservation and visitor quota system. During holidays and peak travel seasons, on-site tickets are extremely limited. So it’s a common issue that many international visitors arrive on site only to find no tickets available, which can disrupt their entire itinerary.
In addition, the official booking system is mainly in Chinese and requires local payment methods, making it even more difficult for foreign travelers to complete the process independently.

November – March 15 (off-season): 8:00 AM-5:30 PM (last entry: 4:30 PM)
2. Do Foreign Visitors Need a Passport?
Yes. The base only accepts real-name reservations, and everyone must present their original passport upon entry.
3. Prohibited Items in the Park
- Food and fruit bought outside are not allowed, for the sake of the pandas’ health.
- You can only have food and drinks sold inside the park.
- Drones are strictly prohibited. Don’t use it; otherwise, it’ll be confiscated.
- Don’t bring large backpacks, suitcases, or long selfie sticks.
- Luggage storage is available at the entrance, but space is limited and paid.
4. Souvenirs & Panda Merchandise
There are many gift shops that you can find near the entrance, exit, and science exhibition areas. Visitors like to go and hunt for panda-themed toys and accessories. They are suitable to give out as gifts or keepsakes.
5. Photography Rules
Visitors are allowed to take photos and videos freely, with no time limits or extra fees. However, flashlight is strictly prohibited, as pandas’ eyes are really vulnerable to strong light.
6. Can You Touch or Feed Pandas? Volunteer Programs
No. Visitors are not allowed to touch or feed giant pandas under any circumstances to ensure mutual safety and disease prevention.
The Chengdu city panda base does not offer panda keeper (volunteer) programs. If you are interested in a panda keeper experience, it is only available at Wolong Panda Base, where official programs can be arranged with assistance.
7. How to Choose Accommodation?
There are some hotels around the panda base, but the choices are limited, with few dining or nightlife options. Traveling between the city center also takes a relatively long time, so generally we don’t recommend international visitors staying nearby.
It is ideal to stay in central Chengdu areas such as Chunxi Road or Tianfu Square. In this way, you can get travel connections easily and further enrich your experience by visiting local restaurants, shopping, and attractions.
How to Include the Panda Base in a One-Day Chengdu Itinerary
The most well-planned, comfortable one-day itinerary would be:
Visit the panda base early in the morning during off-peak hours (the 2–3 hour golden period mentioned above) → return to the city at noon, enjoy Chengdu’s local cuisine for lunch→ visit urban cultural attractions in the afternoon.

Where else Can You See Pandas in Chengdu?
Dujiangyan Panda Valley
This site is located in a more natural mountain environment, so it does offer a quieter and more original panda viewing experience. However, it is far from downtown Chengdu and usually requires about 2 hours one way. If you have a rather flexible itinerary, exploring this panda valley can be rewarding.
Wolong Panda Reserve
The Wolong area is even more remote and surrounded by mountain scenery. This reserve focuses more on conservation and research, and you can observe pandas in a much more natural environment. However, the only problem is that it takes a rather long time to travel from Chengdu, and an exploration usually takes a full day.
Which One Should You Choose?
- If you are staying in Chengdu for 1–3 days, the city panda base is the best choice. It takes the shortest travel time, which is easy to fit into your itinerary.
- If you have more time and are expecting to have a nature-focused experience, you can spend a whole day outside the city to explore Dujiangyan or Wolong.
