The first time you visit Chengdu, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is where you stay. If you go to Wenshu Temple looking for nightlife, for example, or stay in Chunxi hoping for peace, you might end up disappointed.
That’s why you need to know what you’re hoping to get out of your Chengdu tour. Generally speaking, if you’ll be focusing on Chengdu’s most classic sites, such as Panda Base, Wuhou Temple, or People’s Park, staying in the downtown area with convenient transport is the best bet.

Chunxi Road & Taikoo Li: Most Convenient for First-Timers
- Recommended for: Short-term stays, couples and younger travelers, visitors who enjoy shopping and nightlife
Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li are located in Chengdu’s central business district. Here, you can visit Chengdu’s major attractions during the day, then go out to eat, shop, or simply take a walk at night. It’s a very first-time-friendly area for visitors staying in Chengdu for a short period of time.
Advantages
- Wide range of options for restaurants, shopping centers, and hotels
- Convenient for food and shopping at night
- Easy access to major city attractions
Travel Tips
Keep in mind that this is a popular area to stay in Chengdu. Hotel prices tend to be higher than other parts of the city, and if you’re a light sleeper, you may need to request rooms on higher levels or facing away from the street. Additionally, popular hotels may be full during Chinese public holidays and peak travel season, so book in advance if you’re traveling during that time.
Recommended hotels: Hilton Garden Inn Chengdu Taikoo Li, Chengdu Taikoo Li IFS Atour S Hotel

Kuanzhai Alley & People’s Park: Experience Traditional Chengdu Lifestyle
- Recommended for: Visitors interested in local culture, teahouses, food, and more relaxed travel
If you’re more interested in experiencing the local life of Chengdu than visiting shopping centers, consider staying near Kuanzhai Alley and People’s Park.
In the morning, you can take a stroll along the old streets before sitting down at a teahouse in People’s Park to observe local life in the afternoon. Then, in the evening, dine at an authentic Sichuan restaurant. This is the best area to take things slow and enjoy the local, laid-back lifestyle.
Advantages
- Old Chengdu lifestyle and atmosphere
- Lots of teahouses and authentic local dining options
- Great area for walking and exploring on foot
- Many cultural experiences
Travel Tip
Kuanzhai Alley is a popular tourist zone with lots of travelers during holidays and weekends. If you’re looking for somewhere quieter at night, choose a hotel outside the scenic area but still within walking distance.
Recommended hotels: Yinqitang Aesthetic Courtyard Hotel, Hampton by Hilton Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley

Wuhou Temple & Jinli: Local History and Culture
- Recommended for: Travelers interested in the history of the Three Kingdoms and traditional Chinese culture
Wuhou Temple is one of the most iconic historic and cultural attractions of Chengdu. Located near Jinli, it’s an area filled with traditional architecture, street food, and cultural sites, offering a different atmosphere than the more modern and commercial Chunxi Road.
If you want your Chengdu tour to be more focused on history and traditional culture, this is a great part of the city to visit.
Advantages
- Unique Three Kingdoms culture
- Traditional street blocks and atmosphere
- Many options for Sichuan food and street snacks
- Great for evening walks
Travel Tip
If you are looking forward to the shopping, nightlife, and more modern urban experiences, this area may not be your top choice. Instead, spend half a day visiting it before going back to more lively parts of Chengdu.
Recommended hotels: Home2 Suites by Hilton Chengdu Wuhou Temple, Terra Art Zen Hotel

Tianfu Square & City Center: Advantageous Location for Families
- Recommended for: Families with elders or kids, visitors looking for a balance between convenient location and the accommodation environment
If you want to stay in the city center for the convenience but don’t want to be in the busiest part of town on Chunxi Road, consider nearby Tianfu Square. There are many kinds of accommodation to choose from, and you can get to different parts of Chengdu relatively easily. It’s also a good option for visitors looking for a quieter area.
When choosing where to stay in Chengdu with your family, prioritize the room size, breakfast options, nearby restaurants, and how the nightlife is. Additionally, whether or not the hotel is near a metro station may not be the most important factor in this case. Instead, it’ll be more practical to consider if it’s easily accessible by car.
For private tours, we usually suggest planning your stay based on your itinerary instead of just the rating of the hotel. The most important thing is to reduce time spent on the road so you can spend more time having fun. If you want more information, please feel free to contact us.

Other Areas to Stay in: Tianfu Airport, Eastern Suburb Memory, & Wenshu Monastery
Apart from the main areas to stay in in Chengdu mentioned above, here are some other areas to consider.
Tianfu International Airport: Visitors with Early or Late-Night Flights
- Recommended for: Travelers with an early flight to catch, arriving late at night, or with a layover in Chengdu
Chengdu Tianfu International Airport is a little far from the city center. Those with an early flight to catch or plan to arrive late at night should consider spending a night near the airport. Still, we recommend staying in the city center for as many nights as you can to get the most out of the city.

Eastern Suburb Memory: Younger Travelers & Food Culture Lovers
- Recommended for: Younger travelers, couples, foodies
While Eastern Suburb Memory used to be an industrial area, there are now many creative venues, restaurants, and interesting shops that younger travelers may love, and the nearby Jianshe Road is a popular area for food.
If you’re looking for a lively, more modern side of Chengdu to explore alongside the traditional attractions, consider staying here. If you’re mainly planning on visiting iconic cultural sites like Kuanzhai Alley and Wuhou Temple, though, this area isn’t as convenient as the city center.

Wenshu Monastery: Quieter Traditional Atmosphere
- Recommended for: Travelers who enjoy the traditional culture, local foods, and a slower travel style
The area around Wenshu Monastery is quieter than Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li. There are many traditional alleyways, teahouses, and local eateries in the area. It’s also convenient for getting to other attractions in the city.
Recommended hotel: UrCove by HYATT Chengdu Wenshu Chunxi Road

How to Choose Your Chengdu Accommodation
Once you’ve decided what area of Chengdu to stay in, it’s time to pick a hotel. We recommend looking beyond just price and rating to consider amenities and transportation.
In terms of amenities, international chains or hotels with higher star ratings typically have English-speaking employees. You can also check beforehand to see if there is a Western-style breakfast. Additionally, if you stay in the city center and are sensitive to noise, request a room on a higher level or facing away from the street.
In terms of transportation, don’t just look at the distance on the map. Check whether it’s easy to reach by metro or a taxi. If you’re planning on visiting the Chengdu Panda Base in the morning, it’s especially important to book somewhere with convenient taxi services.

How Many Nights to Stay in Chengdu & Do I Need to Switch Hotel?
If your main focus is seeing Chengdu’s most iconic attractions, we suggest staying for 2-3 nights. That way, you’ll be able to see giant pandas, explore the local history and culture, and experience Chengdu life without rushing.
Day 1: Chengdu arrival – Free time/city exploration. Try delicious local food and enjoy the nighttime scenery
Day 2: Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base – Wuhou Temple – Jinli – People’s Park
Day 3: Wenshu Monastery – Kuanzhai Alley – Chengdu departure
On a tour like this, you can stay at the same hotel in the city center the whole time. We suggest somewhere with convenient transportation and dining options, like Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li.
For an extended trip including Dujiangyan, Leshan, or Mount Emei, you should choose your accommodation based on your overall itinerary. If you still haven’t decided what you want to do yet, check out our best 2026 Chengdu itineraries for inspiration.
Get up close with adorable giant pandas at the breeding center, savor fiery Sichuan cuisine, and explore Chengdu's laid-back teahouse culture and ancient streets.
Should You Stay Overnight in Dujiangyan?
If you’re only visiting Dujiangyan itself, we recommend taking a day trip from Chengdu and returning to Chengdu in the evening. If you’re also planning on going to Mount Qingcheng or wish to take things slow, though, consider spending a night.
Volunteer at a panda base caring for China's beloved bears, then explore the Taoist sanctuary of Mount Qingcheng and the colossal Leshan Giant Buddha carved into a cliff.
Should You Stay Overnight in Leshan?
Similarly, if you’re only going to see the Leshan Giant Buddha, a same-day trip from Chengdu is more than doable. Visitors traveling to Mount Emei from Leshan on the following day, on the other hand, should spend a night near Mount Emei instead of going back to Chengdu.

Should You Stay Overnight at Mount Emei?
We recommend spending at least one night at Mount Emei if you’re planning on reaching the Golden Summit or watching the sunrise.
When visiting both Leshan and Emei Mountain, rather than taking separate trips from Chengdu, a Chengdu – Leshan – Mount Emei itinerary saves travel time.

Plan Chengdu Accommodations Based on Your Itinerary
If you’re planning on visiting Dujiangyan, Leshan, Mount Emei, or Jiuzhaigou, or if you want to combine Chengdu trip with a visit to Chongqing or Xi’an, plan your accommodation based on your specific itinerary plans to minimize transit time.
