What to See and Do in Heishantou
1. Heishantou Ruins
Over 700 years ago, Heishantou was the fief of Hazar, the brother of Genghis Khan. Heishantou Ruins are remnants of the ancient city built by Hazar. With an area of approximately 0.56 square miles (1.5 square kilometers), you can see mounds, walls, moats, and tombs. The ruin site is of great historical value to the Mongolian people, has been designated as a national cultural relic protection unit.
2. Ergun Wetland
Ergun Wetland is the largest and most well-preserved wetland in China and Asia. Its rich biodiversity is incredible, with over 283 species of plant lives, 252 species of mammals, reptiles, and other vertebrates, 230 species of birds, including some endangered species such as red-crowned cranes.
3. Hulunbuir Grassland
If youāre traveling to Hulunbuir in Inner Mongolia, you must see its signature grasslands. Get a taste of nomadic lifestyle at Hulunbuir Grassland. You can go on horseback rides, camp, and hike.

4. Hazar Lake

Best Time to Visit Heishantou
The best time for your Inner Mongolia tourĀ to Heishantou is from June to September,Ā when the weather is mild and the grassland is at its prime. Itās the perfect time for outdoor activities. You can climb up the hill to watch the sunset overĀ Ergun River and the Russian town of Olochi. The night sky will be dark and clear for stargazing.
On the other hand, winter is probably not the best time to visit Heishantou. It can get very frigid and snowy with an average temperature of -13°F (-25°C) in January. The grassland will be blanketed with snow and ice. Most outdoor activities will not be available.
Getting to Heishantou
By air: Take a flight to Hailar Dongshan Airport, which is about 124 miles (200 kilometers) away from Heishantou. From there, rent a car, hire a private driver, or take a taxi to Heishantou. The drive usually takes around 3 hours.
By train:Ā Take a train to Manzhouli Railway Station, about 62 miles (100 kilometers) away from Heishantou. Then take a bus or taxi to Heishantou, which typically takes around 1.5 hours.
