Is Chengdu Cold in December?

Does It Snow in Chengdu in December?

It’s extremely rare in downtown Chengdu. Brief sleet is possible but uncommon.

If you want to explore the snowscape, you can spend 1 or 2 days having a side trip to Mount Emei (snow views at the Golden Summit), Xiling Snow Mountain (skiing), Bipenggou, or Jiuzhaigou (snow scenery in some years). These high-altitude areas enter the snow season in December.

Is December a Good Time to Visit Chengdu?

Of course. It’s ideal to visit Chengdu in this month.

Compared to peak seasons, there are smaller crowds and lower prices for hotels and flights. The weather is not extremely cold, so it’s also suitable for outdoor sightseeing.

For visitors coming for the pandas or hearty Sichuan cuisine, you’ll get a more unforgettable experience. Nearby scenery in Jiuzhaigou or Xiling Snow Mountain is also stunning. In addition, Christmas and New Year bring a more festive atmosphere.

However, December is not that suitable for travelers who mind the predominant cloudy days and damp cold weather. Besides, you needs to travel outside the city for snow experiences.

What to Do in Chengdu in December?

Highlights of December include giant pandas, Sichuan hotpot, plum blossoms, snow mountains, and holiday events. No matter if your focus is on relaxed sightseeing or photography, your journey will be fulfilling.

1. Visit the Adorable Pandas in the Chengdu Panda Base

Summer days have passed and giant pandas have now become more active in December’s cooler weather. There will be a longer time for you to see them eating bamboo, playing around and climbing trees in outdoor spaces.

The recommended visiting time is also later than that in summer. While you may need to arrive at the panda base at 7 a.m. in July for the best experience, in December, you can make it around 10 a.m. or in the early afternoon.

If you still prefer to choose the earlier slots, remember to prepare for the cold mornings.

2. Enjoy the Hot and Spicy Sichuan Hotpot

Chengdu is famous for its local cuisine, such as Mapo Tofu, Malatang, Longchaoshou (spicy wanton) and above all, hotpot.

If you’re a first-time visitor, we’d suggest finding a restaurant in areas near Kuanzhai Alley and Jinli Street. It’ll be much easier to combine your hotpot meal with an exploration of these two famous Chengdu attractions. There are many teahouses serving traditional Chengdu Gaiwan tea (tea served in a covered bowl), which is perfect to pair with hotpot.

December is also an ideal time to have a hotpot with your family or friends. The steam and spicy flavor can beat the cold weather and warm you up from body to heart.

3. See Wintersweet at Du Fu Thatched Cottage

From late December, wintersweet blossoms begin to bloom at Du Fu Thatched Cottage. The ancient architecture and golden blossoms create a beautiful winter scene, which immerses you in a poetic atmosphere. Crowds are smaller during this month, so you can easily take some stunning pictures.

It’s recommended to visit the site in the morning when visitor numbers thin out and the lighting is just soft and pretty. A traditional Hanfu or a light-colored coat can perfectly match the background.

4. Immerse in the Snow Scenery at Mount Emei

December marks the beginning of the beautiful snow season at Mount Emei. On the lower sections of the mountain, you may encounter a lot of naughty wild monkeys. When reaching the top, there’s a great chance for you to enjoy the view of the stretching snowy landscape at the Golden Summit, along with the sea of clouds, rime ice, and sunrise.

Many people reach the summit by cable car. However, if you plan to hike, be aware that mountain paths can become slippery in this season. You need to prepare anti-slip shoe covers or crampons, which are also available on site.

5. Go Skiing at Xiling Snow Mountain

Xiling Snow Mountain is about 2 hours by car from Chengdu. It is one of the most popular winter destinations near the city. Normally, the snow season should arrive in mid to late December, and both professional skiers and beginners can have a fun time here.

Besides skiing, you may also try activities such as snowmobiles, snow tubing, cable car rides, and most importantly, warm yourself up in hot springs after a day.

At the end of December, there’ll be light shows in downtown areas, you can enjoy the lively night with locals.

What to Wear in Chengdu in December & Packing List

Chengdu is not as cold as northern China in December, but the humid weather can still make it feel quite cold. We’d suggest you dress in layers to flexibly adjust between indoor and outdoor areas.

Recommended Clothing

  • Base layer: Thermal underwear or heat-tech clothing
  • Middle layer: Sweater, fleece sweatshirt, or a lightweight down layer
  • Outer layer: Windproof jacket or medium-length down jacket. A thin coat is not enough.
  • Bottoms: Thick jeans, corduroy pants, or trousers with thermal leggings.
  • Shoes: Comfortable sneakers or winter boots for the city. Waterproof shoes with good grip for Mount Emei or Xiling Snow Mountain

Recommended Packing List

  • Scarf, gloves, and a warm hat for extra comfort
  • Foldable umbrella for occasional drizzles
  • Power bank. Cold weather can drain your phone’s power quickly.
  • Moisturizer and lip balm for dry skin in winter
  • Thermos bottle for warm drinks

Heavy snow gear is usually unnecessary in downtown Chengdu unless you plan to visit snowy mountain areas.

FAQ about Chengdu Tour in December

Are There Crowds in Chengdu in December?

Generally speaking, it is not too crowded, especially compared with peak travel seasons and holidays. You can enjoy a relaxing trip without worrying too much about waiting time. However, weekends, Christmas, and days around New Year can see a surge of visitors in major attractions.

Is Chengdu Suitable for Families in December?

Really suitable. The weather is not too hot and not too cold, quite friendly to elderly visitors and kids. We recommend you visit the Chengdu Panda Base, Chengdu Natural History Museum, Du Fu Thatched Cottage, People’s Park, and enjoy snow activities at Xiling Snow Mountain.

Is Chengdu Expensive to Visit in December?

December falls in Chengdu’s off-season. Costs of hotels and flights are cheaper than those in spring, the National holiday and the summer holiday. Practical Tips for Visiting Chengdu in December

  • It is necessary to check weather forecasts and road conditions before visiting Mount Emei, Xiling Snow Mountain, or other high-altitude areas.
  • If you plan to spend New Year’s Eve in Chengdu, you do need to book hotels early. Traffic can be very heavy that night, so allow extra travel time around busy shopping areas.
  • Dujiangyan has lower water flow in December, so it’s unlikely to see its grandest scenery. You can focus more on its engineering history, Guanxian Ancient Town, and nearby Qingcheng Mountain.
  • Food lovers should not stop at Kuanzhai Alley and Jinli, try exploring local areas such as Jianshe Road and Fuxin Night Market for more authentic Chengdu flavors.
