Tips for a Smooth Trip from Kunming Airport to the City Center

  • Kunming Airport has frequent flights every day throughout the year. The busiest hours are usually 07:00-10:00 in the morning and 16:00-20:00 in the afternoon. If you plan to take a taxi during these periods, expect a longer waiting time. In comparison, the metro runs more punctually.
  • If you arrive after 22:00, consider taking a taxi or ride-hailing service. Their door-to-door service is the most friendly option for visitors with late arrivals.
  • Check the latest flight information released by your airline before departure. Arrange your airport transfer accordingly.

Choose the Best Transportation Option Based on Your Needs

1. Limited budget:
Metro Line 6 is the best choice for budget travelers. The metro ticket is rather cheap and it will not be affected by traffic congestion. Besides, English signs are available throughout the station, so it’ll be easy for international travelers to navigate. You can take it from the Airport Center Station on the B2 Floor.

Metro Line 6 connects with Tangzixiang Station, which is a very convenient hub. You can also transfer to other metro lines at this station which takes you to major areas like Nanping Street, Green Lake Park, and Kunming Railway Station.

The operating hours of Metro Line 6 are generally 06:20-22:55:

  • Airport Center Station → Tangzixiang Station (To City Center) 06:20-23:00
  • Tangzixiang Station → Airport Center Station (To the Airport) 06:20-22:55

2. Traveling with heavy luggage: If you’re traveling with large luggage, taking a taxi or Didi (China’s Uber) is more convenient.

3. Arriving late at night: Taxi and ride-hailing services are the best. You can see the taxi waiting area outside the arrival hall. There will be “Taxi” signs and a queue telling you where to wait.

Do not follow or trust drivers who approach you inside the terminal and offer rides. Their vehicles are usually not official taxis. Besides, they may also charge significantly higher fares.

4. Traveling with a group (4 or more people): Consider taxi and ride-hailing services as well. For group visitors, after splitting the fare, the travel cost is usually not much more expensive than an airport shuttle bus. Besides, this is also a rather comfortable trip.

5. Staying near Kunming Railway Station or Xiaoximen: If you’re staying in these areas, consider traveling with the airport shuttle bus. There are lines taking you directly to the destinations without transfers.

How to Get from Kunming Airport to Train Stations, Hotels and Attractions?

Since many travelers use Kunming only as a transit point to Dali, Lijiang, or Shangri-La, knowing how to travel from Kunming Airport to train stations and top attractions is also important.

Kunming Airport to Kunming Railway Station

Kunming Railway Station is located in the city center. It mainly serves regular trains as well as some high-speed trains. Many travelers also choose to stay in this area because of its convenient location.

1. Airport shuttle bus: One of the most chosen lines is the Airport Express Line 2. It travels directly to the area near Kunming Railway Station, being an ideal choice for travelers with large luggage.

3. Taxi/Ride-hailing service: Takes around 40 minutes. Groups or travelers with heavy luggage can put this one at the top of the list.

Tip: If you’re catching a regular train to other cities on the same day of your arrival, you need to allow at least 2 hours of extra time for baggage collection, airport procedures, and possible traffic delays.

Kunming Airport to Kunming South Railway Station

Kunming South Railway Station is the largest high-speed railway hub in Yunnan. It serves most trains to destinations including Dali, Lijiang, Baoshan, and Pu’er.

1. Metro (Most Recommended)

Take Metro Line 6 and transfer to Line 4 at Juhua Station, then arrive at Kunming South Railway Station. The journey takes around 70 minutes and costs about RMB 9 (≈ USD 1.25). It’s a good choice for daytime travel, since the schedule is generally more reliable.

If you plan to explore Kunming’s popular attractions on your first day, here are some recommended transportation options:

Green Lake Park:

It’s ideal to combine the metro trip and a simple walk. It is preferred by many first-time visitors, especially those traveling during winter to enjoy seasonal flowers and seagull viewing.

Metro Route: Take Metro Line 6 to East Coach Station (Dongbu Coach Station). Then transfer to Metro Line 3 and get off at Panjiwan Station. From there, walk for about 15 minutes to reach the destination.

Metro Route: Take Metro Line 6 and get off at Tangzixiang Station. Exit from Exit A. Then walk about 500 meters, and you’ll see the site.

Dianchi Lake:

Most visitors would go to Dianchi by taxi since it’s both convenient and time-saving (around 45 minutes). If you have enough time, you can continue to visit Dragon Gate at Western Hills.

Stone Forest Scenic Area:

Traveling from Kunming Airport to the Stone Forest requires a relatively long time. Thus, visiting it directly after arrival may not give you the best experience. A better option is to go to your hotel first and join a one-day tour the next day.

For travelers who want to explore Kunming efficiently, a 3-day Kunming tour combining the city’s highlights and Stone Forest is a convenient choice.
