How to Plan a Trip to Pingyao: A Practical Guide for First-time Visitors

Written by Natalia |

People always associate Shanxi merchants with Pingyao. But do you know why? How did a small county in China’s hinterland become the Wall Street in the Qing Dynasty? Only if you truly step onto this ancient city, you will find out the reasons. Actually, Pingyao is far more than a footnote to Shanxi merchants legends. This remarkably preserved city hidden in central Shanxi Province is like a living fossil forgotten by time. While its history can be dated back to the Western Zhou Dynasty over 2,700 years ago, the architecture you see today was mainly built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. There you can see complete city walls, ancient cobbled streets, escort agencies, historic banks, and traditional quadrangle dwellings left by wealthy Shanxi merchants.

In 1997, Pingyao Ancient City drew the world’s attention as it was identified as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site along with the surrounding Shuanglin Temple and Zhenguo Temple.

Can’t wait to plan a trip to Pingyao? This article will walk you through everything for a Pingyao Ancient City travel, from transport tips to top things to do and itinerary ideas.

But April, May, September, and OctoberĀ are more recommended to ensure a better travel experience. These months usually see pleasant temperature, low rainfall and relatively less crowds (except public holidays).

For a deep cultural dive, travel around the Chinese New Year (aka Spring Festival). At that time, the ancient city lights up with colorful lanterns, creating a more vibrant atmosphere.

How to Get to Pingyao

Pingyao does not have an airport, but it’s easily reached by high-speed trains. From cities like Taiyuan, Xi’an, Datong and Beijing, you can conveniently take a direct high-speed train arriving at Pingyao Ancient City Railway Station, only 6 km from the old town. If departing from other cities, you may need to transfer.

By Air

As Pingyao is not connected by air, tourists can fly to Taiyuan Wusu International Airport, the closest airport. From there, take a taxi to Taiyuan South Railway Station and transfer to a high-speed train to Pingyao. Alternatively, take a taxi (about 1.5 hours) direct to Pingyao at the cost of CNY 200-300.

By High-speed Train – Recommended

Pingyao has two railway stations, namely Pingyao Station and Pingyao Ancient City Station (Pingyao Gucheng Railway Station). It is more recommended to arrive by high-speed train and get off at Pingyao Ancient City Station. The high-speed train rideĀ only takesĀ 30 minutes from Taiyuan, 2.5-3 hours from Datong, 4 hours or so from Beijing, and 2.5-3Ā hours from Xi’an. After exiting the station, take a taxiĀ costing roughly CNY 15-20Ā or take bus 108Ā to quickly reach the Old Town of Pingyao.

By Bus / Long-distance Coach

Tourists in nearby cities such as Taiyuan, Jinzhong, and Linfen may also choose to take a long-distance bus to Pingyao. In Taiyuan, the bus departs from Jiannan Bus Station and takes 1.5-2 hours to Pingyao. The bus fare is between CNY 25 and 35. From Jinzhong Bus Station, it takes 1-1.5 hours to Pingyao and costs CNY 20-30. If departing from Linfen, you need to take a 2-2.5 hours ride at the cost of CNY 35-45.

To buy the ticket at the window, you just need to show your passport and tell the staff your destination. It’s fine to either pay by cash or mobile methods.

Transportation in Pingyao – How to Travel Around

The Old Town of Pingyao is compact, so it’s best explored on foot. For longer distances within the city wall, eco-friendly battery carts or man-powered pedicabs are available for around CNY 10 per trip. Taxi or public buses are needed for travelling outside of the Old Town.

In case you wish to take a side trip to the surrounding attractions such as Wang Family Compound and Qiao Family Compound, direct buses are available but with limited schedules.

From Pingyao Bus Station, you can buy a ticket to Taiyuan or Qi County, and inform the driver that your destination is Qiao Family Compound. After getting off the bus, walk for 15 minutes or hire a pedicab (CNY 5-10) to the scenic area.

If you plan to tour Wang Family Compound, take a bus to Lingshi or Jiexiu and get off halfway. Considering the complex transfer, language barrier and limited daily departures, joining a private tour will be a wise choice.

What to See and Do in Pingyao

Stepping into Pingyao Ancient City, you may feel like travelling back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. At an elevated position, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the whole city. The outline looks like a turtle crawling southward, hence the nickname ā€œTurtle Cityā€. The city has six gates in total. The south gate symbolizes the turtle’s head, the north gate is the bending tail, and the remaining four gates are the four legs. Turtles were believed to be the totem of longevity and stability, so ancient Chinese built cities in the shape of turtles, hoping they were firm and long-lasting. Now, let’s explore together things to see in Pingyao.

Ming-Qing Era Atmosphere & Historical Sites inside Pingyao Ancient City

The streets in Pingyao Ancient CityĀ are arranged in the pattern of ā€œ#ā€, with small alleys crisscrossing in all directions. The four main streets are lined with shops on both sides. The antique buildings featured by gray tiles, black bricks and upturned eaves, exude a simple yet elegant charm. The ubiquitous draft banks, escort agencies, and grand courtyards are the witnesses of the grandeur of Pingyao as a financial hub. You can also see the old government office and Confucius Temple, an academy to learn the history of China’s imperial examination system.

Pingyao City Wall

The Ancient City Wall is the essence of Pingyao attractions. It’s an epitome of China’s ancient county-level military defence system. The wall takes the shape of a square, stretching 6.4 km. An interesting fact is that there are altogether 72 watchtowers and 3,000 crenels, representing the 72 prominent students and 3,000 followers of Confucius. Nowadays, the wall is no longer an enclosure to guard the city, but more like a sightseeing platform. Ascending from the south gate and then walking towards the southwest turret, you will enjoy a perfect angle to see the turtle-like layout of Pingyao beneath your feet. Morning and sunset see the most enchanting scenery on the ancient wall and are golden time to take photos.

Qiao Family Compound

It’s located in Qiaojiabu Village, Qi County, about 40 km from Pingyao Ancient City. The whole Qiao Family CompoundĀ consists of 6 big courtyards, 19 small courtyards and 313 rooms, arrayed in the shape a huge Chinese character ā€œå›ā€. It is a groundbreaking design in Chinese folk residences, symbolizing double happiness. Delicate brick and wood carvings can be seen everywhere in the yards. What’s worth your special attention is the glass ball hanging in the middle hall. It can reflect all figures in the room and is recognized as the world’s earliest surveillance camera. How amazing it is! How clever Shanxi merchants were!

On scale, it is much larger than the Qiao Family Compound, boasting over 35 yards and 340 rooms. Actually, the area of Wang Family Compound even surpasses the size of the Forbidden City, no wonder it is often hailed as the Top 1 Folk Residence in China. During a visit, you may found it more like a fortified, self-contained city rather than a residence.

Strollling along its many alleys, you will find many exquisite stone carvings, wood carvings, and brick carvings. Each of them are elegantly designed and has rich meanings. Following a local guide will help you discover all its unique designs and carvings.

See PingyaoĀ Again – An Outdoor Scene Performance

Are you eager to travel back to China’s Qing Dynasty? If yes, don’t miss this amazing theatrical performance. It was adapted from a touching true story between a Pingyao banker Zhao Yishuo and his manager Wang. When Zhao learned that all families of Wang died only leaving a son stranded in Russia, he mortgaged all fortune to rescue the son. Then he organized a team of 232 bodyguards and embarked on a 7-year odyssey. At last, the son was saved and brought back to homeland, but sadly all others sacrificed. This is a true portrait of Shanxi merchants’ morals of faith and honesty.

Throughout the show, you are not a passive audience, but part of the cast. You will walk following the actors through a marketplace, escort agency, ancestral hall and a final hall successively. It’s like the tale is happening before your eyes!
