What Is Shanghai M50 Art District?Ā The Cultural Draw of Shanghai’s M50

From Factory Floor to Fine Art: The History of 50 Moganshan Road

Before 1999, this unique art district was stillĀ an ordinary textile factory. In the 1930s, Shanghai entrepreneurs established the Xinhe Yarn Factory here, marking the beginning of the history of the national textile industry. Over the decades, countless yarn products were produced here, making it an important part of Shanghai’s textile industry at the time. In 1994, it was renamed Chunming Spinning Factory.

At the end of 1999, due to industrial restructuring, this 100,000-square-meter industrial area with more than 50 factory buildings was officially decommissioned. BecauseĀ of beingĀ vacant and underutilized, the rent here was much lower thanĀ other bustling areas.

This, in turn, attracted the first group of artists, led by Xue Song, to move in in 2000. The tall factory buildings, uniquely shaped roofs, and red brick walls provided these artists with distinctive inspirations. From then on, this area began to be dominated by art and culture.

M50’s Unique Vibe: A Thriving Contemporary Art Community

M50 Art Park has a unique original atmosphere and cultural draw. The industrial-style appearance, with weathered red walls and rusty steel bars, tells the industrial stories of old Shanghai. The building walls are covered with graffiti created by artists using spray paint, which is also the soul of the old factory buildings.

Here, there are first-generation veteran artists who settled in around 2000, as well as many new artists who came for its fame. In total, more than 100 outstanding artists and designers have settled here. At any café in the park, you might encounter a well-known artist.

This inevitably brings to mind the Beijing 798 Art District. Like it, the M50 Art Park is an art district transformed from factories. The difference is that Beijing 798 Art District was developed under government leadership, so it is more commercialized. But M50 is a naturally formed art gathering place where artists spontaneously come together, preserving more artistic purity.

Additionally, unlike the flat and open grid layout of Beijing 798, M50 is located along the Suzhou River, with intersecting alleys and compact spaces inside, featuring a more intimate atmosphere.

Types of Art You’ll Find

Painting

In M50 Creative Park, the core mainstream art form is painting, which mainly includes abstract oil painting, watercolor painting, acrylic painting, etc., as well as experimental works exemplified by Xue Song’s “Burnt Painting”. These works are primarily exhibited in galleries, such asĀ ShanghArtĀ Gallery, Eastlink Gallery, and H Gallery.

Sculpture

A variety of sculptures are scattered in the alleys and squares of the park, most of which are made of recycled waste materials such as metal, wood, and glass. Most uniquely, some artists incorporate the remaining textile machinery parts from the park into their sculpture creations, endowing the works with a distinct M50 industrial style.

Photography

Photography Art in the park mainly covers documentary photography, art photography, conceptual photography, digital photography, etc., focusing on themes such as urban changes, social changes, and personal perspectives. The park’s industrial buildings serve as a natural backdrop for the display of photography works, enhancing their narrative sense.

Many other art types

In addition to these three mainstream art forms, the park also features a rich variety of art types including installation art, multimedia art, and graffiti art. These artworks are either displayed in exhibition areas or naturally integrated into the park’s buildings, waiting to be discovered by art lovers.

Furthermore, artists are making breakthroughs in experimental and cutting-edge art, and organizing special exhibitions covering performance art, sound art, mixed media art, and crypto art, and so on.

Things to Do in Shanghai M50 District

Visit Art Galleries at 50 Moganshan Road

There are a total of 46 galleries within the M50 art district, among which well-known ones includeĀ ShanghArt Gallery, Yibo Gallery, Eastlink Gallery, Polar Bear Gallery and H Gallery. Their artistic style primarily focuses on contemporary art, while also incorporating the naturally formed industrial elements of the former textile factory, creating a unique artistic style. The main art forms include painting, sculpture, photography, installation, new media, and experimental art. While visiting the galleries, you may also encounter artists in the district and have the opportunity to discuss and exchange your personal cultural and artistic views with them.

Photography & Street Art Exploration

As one of the most classic elements in the park, the street graffiti wall has become rich and colorful after more than a decade of painting by artists, making it an excellent choice for photography. But at what angles can we take artistic photos with explosive atmosphere? Below are some inspiring spots:

  • Entrance point: The wall directly facing the park has the most impactful color! You can stand next to the crow character and have a “live interaction” with it, such as reaching out to “pick up” a ball in the graffiti.
  • Corner position: Walking deeper into the park, there is a corner wall painted with three-dimensional patterns. Standing at the corner of the wall and shooting with a wide-angle lens, you will instantly become a “giant”, and the effect is very stunning!
  • Retro industrial style: There is a red brick wall of an old factory building next to the graffiti wall, where industrial elements collide with vivid colors, creating a super sensory effect. You can lean against the brick wall and pair it with a background wall with cool graffiti to take a “punk style” photo, which will definitely amaze your social media.
  • Light and shadow zone: When the sun is slanting from 3-4 pm, you can find a wall with mottled light and shadow, take side or silhouette shots, and directly elevate your photos to a higher level!
  • Childhood Fun Photo: There is a blue background graffiti wall at the innermost part, painted with various funny cartoon patterns. Squatting there to take photos or make exaggerated expressions, you can directly get a photo full of childlike fun!

CafƩs, Shops & Creative Studios

If you feel tired while admiring the art in the park, you can visit the cafƩ inside the old factory building and enjoy a freshly brewed hand-poured coffee. The park is equipped with numerous cafƩs, creative shops, and studios for leisure and shopping.

You can check out the exterior murals and the Hongqiao Tiande Thousand Trees on the rooftop at Shuita Café in Building 8, or visit LINsCafe to appreciate antique furniture with decades of history.

In the craft shops, you can pick out your favorite accessories and cultural products. And some stores offer DIY options to let you personally experience the artistic creation process.

The park also occasionally hosts workshops on pottery, oil painting, and accessory making, where you can directly interact with artists and share creative insights.

After these experiences, I believe you will truly grasp the M50 lifestyle: relaxed, unhurried, and leisurely, yet brimming with inspiration, creativity, and a rich artistic atmosphere.

Explore Old Factory Buildings in M50

Tall houses, mottled cement floors, vintage red bricks, old chimneys, and complex spiral staircases, these retro elements have been integrated with modern art to become today’s distinctive old factory buildings. There are more than 50 such factories in the park, each of which has been carved into a unique shape by artists and has now become a classic place for people to take photos and check in. Some of these locations have also been selected as filming locations for Chinese TV dramas. Here are some different perspectives for taking photos in the old factory building:

  • Overhead perspective: Climbing onto the terrace of the water tower coffee shop, you can enjoy a large part of the factory building from a top-down perspective.
  • Graffiti Wall Group Photo: The numerous graffiti walls along the streets of Moganshan are available for tourists to check in and take photos.
  • Detail shooting: Enter Building 5, where you can capture the intricate details of historic industrial equipment.
  • Rotating staircase: Capture the sense of hierarchy and lines of the rotating staircase, combined with light and shadow, to capture portraits!
