What is the Tibet Travel Permit?
Tibet Travel PermitĀ is a mandatory document for tourists from Taiwan ofĀ ChinaĀ and all foreign touristsĀ travelling to Tibet. Different from China visa, it is an additional permission for entering Tibet, thus also called Tibet Visa, Tibet Entry Permit, and Tourism Permit. Citizens of the Chinese mainland, residents of Hong Kong and Macao,Ā and overseas Chinese with valid Chinese ID and passport do not need to apply.Ā Tourists from Hong Kong and Macao can travel to TibetĀ on their ownĀ as long as they holdĀ Chinese special administrative region passports, Home Return Permits for Hong Kong and Macao Compatriots or Mainland Travel Permits for Hong Kong and Macao Residents.
Who Canāt Get the Permit?
Due to the special identity or profession, some people can not obtain the permitĀ via a travel agency, including the foreign journalists, foreign government officials and diplomats. They are supposed to apply via Foreign Affairs Department of Tibet with their valid documents.
What is the Tibet Travel PermitĀ Look Like?
Tibet Travel PermitĀ consists of two pages of A4 paper stamped with the official seal of the government departmentās approval and anti-counterfeiting mark. On the first page, the dates of entry and exit from Tibet, the scenic spots visited and the name of the travel agency will be indicated. And the name, birthday and passport number of tourists will be displayed on the second page.

Tibet Travel PermitĀ Requirements & Documents
To apply for the Tibet Travel Permit, the required documents include passport and itinerary. Specifically, the scanned copy of the first page of the passport is needed and the validity period of the passport must be more than 6 months. Itinerary should include the following information: the dates of entry and exit Tibet, means of transportation, and planned cities and tourists attractions in Tibet.
The situations for China Visa varies based on countries, tourists from visa waiver countries do not need to provide it, while others need to provide its scanned copy of the valid China visa page. And if tourists do not hold a tourism visa, such as a work visa or a student visa, then relative certification documents may be required.
As for Residents of Taiwan, they need to provide their Taiwan Compatriot Entry Permit. Taiwan compatriots residing in the Chinese mainland may also need to provide residence permits or certificate of employment.
Applying from Chengdu, Shanghai, or Kathmandu
Applying from ChengduĀ and ShanghaiĀ follows the normal procedures, i.e. apply through a travel agency. While the application process in Kathmandu is special. How to Get a Tibet Travel PermitĀ If Enter from Nepal?
There are two main steps for tourists entering from Nepal. The first step is to apply for a Tibet Permit and visa invitation letter through a Tibetan travel agency and then get a group tourist visa from the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu with the assistance of the cooperative local travel agency. The required basic documents include the original and copy of valid passport, two recent white-background ID photos in the same size as the passport photo and information of your itinerary.
And here are some important things you should pay attention:
- Your original Chinese visa may be canceled or regarded as invalid when you apply for a group tourist visa.
- Contact the travel agency and determine the itinerary one month in advance. And ensure you stay at Kathmandu for at least 3 – 5 workdays for the application process of the visa.
- When applying for the group visa, your original passport will be submitted to the Chinese Embassy for a few workdays, so during this period, you cannot use the passport for other international travel, but you can enjoy the tour within Nepal with a copy of your passport.
- With a group visa, tourists can only enter via the designated ports.
How long does it take to obtain the permit?
The approval duration for Tibet Travel PermitĀ is usually 10 – 15 days. After getting the permit, the travel agency will send the original document to the touristsāĀ hotel in China by express delivery, which will take 3 – 5 days. So it is highly recommended to contact the travel agency at least 20 – 30 days earlier in case of delay of your Tibet tour.
Can I Apply for the Tibet Travel PermitĀ On My Own?
No. To facilitate unified management, ensure the safety of tourists, and protect the culture and ecological environment of Tibet, foreign travelers are not allowed to apply for Tibet Travel PermitĀ by themselves, they can only apply through a local travel agency.
Costs & Key Details
Fee: Ā„300–500 (included in most tour packages).
The Tibet Travel PermitĀ itself is free of charge, but an additional service fee needs to be paid to the travel agency, which is about CNY 300 – 500. For the majority of Tibet group tours, the service fee is usually included in the total cost directly and there is no need to pay it separately. You can confirm with the travel agency whether it is included when booking the itinerary.
If expedited processing is required, the travel agency may charge an additional expedited service fee. And if the tour covers border areas such as the Everest Base Camp, AliensāĀ Travel Permit is required which costs CNY 50 and is paid to the Public Security Bureau directly. Besides, additional service charge will be paid to the travel agency.
Validity: Usually covers your entire Tibet itinerary.
The permit does not have a fixed validity period. Usually, it is exactly the same as the duration of your confirmed China Tibet tour.
When Will My Tibet Travel PermitĀ be Checked?
Airport
The permit will be checked at the check-in counter, security checkpoint and boarding gate in the airport. And no matter which cities are you in, the original permit is a must.
Railway station
At the railway station ticket window and entrance, the Tibet Travel PermitĀ will be checked. Besides, when the train attendants check tickets, the permit should also be provided. If you take the train at Xian, Chongqing and Lanzhou, the original document is needed. However, if you travel from other cities, the color printout is also acceptable.

Additional Permits You May Need for Tibet Travel
Alienās Travel Permit (for destinations outside Lhasa)
Alienās Travel PermitĀ is the second most important permit required for your Tibet travel. With the permit, foreign tourists are allowed to enter non-open borders or controlled areas within the Tibet. It is issued by Exit and Entry Administration and also requires application via a travel agency. The cost is CNY 50. The applicable regions include Everest Base Camp, the Ali region and parts of Shannan city.
Military Permit (for remote areas like Mount Kailash or Nyingchi)
Military Permit is used in the non-open border areas of Tibet, such as Ali Region, Nyingchi, and parts of Shannan city, etc. So if you plan a Tibet tourĀ to these places, it is also necessary to apply for the permit with the assistance of a travel agency on the basis of holding the Tibet Travel PermitĀ and the Alienās Travel Permit. With a longer approval duration, it is recommended to apply at least half a month to one month in advance.
Tibet Group Visa (for travelers from Nepal)
Tibet Group VisaĀ is specially designed for all travelers entering Tibet from Nepal. And only tourists joining in group tours organized by a travel agency are permitted to enter via Nepal. The most important thing is that no matter whether you already have a China visa or not, a group visa is needed and your original China visa will be canceled. The Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu is responsible for issuing the visa. And only a local travel agency can submit the application.

Submit your application early
