Kashgar Transportation: Getting to & Around the City

Written by Ivy Dong |

Diving into the far west of China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, you find Kashgar, meaning ā€œthe place of jadesā€ in the ancient Turkic language. This is the filming location for the movie ā€œThe Kite Runnerā€, a stone cityĀ bathed in the reflection of snow-capped mountains, where on sundays, you walk through bustling streets, the sweet sounds of the Twelve Muquam beginning to fill the air. Fresh fruits and veggies, glistening with dew, are casually placed a long the roadside, as if the town is adorned with necklaces and bracelets of colors. It is chaotic yet whole, quietly embracing you into its rhythm.

The Yarkand and Kashgar Rivers rush from the highlands, breathing life into the oasis and its epic stories. The Silk Road, split into northern and southern routes to bypass the desert, reunites here, thriving in trade before crossing the Pamirs toward South and Central Asia. This guide will introduceĀ Kashgar’s transportationĀ to give insight into how it all come together.
