What Are the Avatar Mountains?

The Avatar Mountains actually refer to the thousands of slender, pillar-like peaks made of quartz sandstone, which are mainly standing in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in China. As many of the peaks reach over 200 meters high, they would pierce through the morning mist and clouds, and this will make them look like they are floating in the sky, and that’s how they became linked with the movie Avatar.

The Connection Between Avatar Movie and Zhangjiajie

Even though the movie Avatar was not filmed in Zhangjiajie, the director James Cameron and his team were reportedly inspired by the amazing scene of peaks and misty valleys. In 2010, one of the most famous pillars was was renamed Avatar Hallelujah Mountain from the “Southern Sky Column.” And this move is designed to highlight the mountain’s link with the film. And it has indeed, attracted more visitors from all over the world.

Where Are the Avatar Mountains Located? (Hunan, China)

The Avatar Mountains are mostly located in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. It is China’s first national forest park (1982) and later part of the UNESCO-listed Wulingyuan Scenic Area. The park is a really large one, and except for the peaks, it also includes many famous spots like Yuanjiajie.

Avatar Hallelujah Mountain – The Most Famous Peak

Among all the Avatar mountains, Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, which reaches a height of about 1,080 meters, is the most famous and most visited. It is a quartz sandstone formed via water erosion and tectonic shifts for over 380 million years.

Even though its height is already shocking, the dramatic scene it creates is another important reason for it to become famous: the base of the pillar disappears when clouds and mist flood the villages below, so that the upper part of the peak will be like it’s floating in the middle of the air. And thus it has become an icon among all its fellows.

The History and Facts of the Avatar Mountains

How the Hallelujah Mountains Got Their Name

The name “Hallelujah” stems from the movie Avatar. Originally it was called the Southern Sky Column, but local authority had renamed it Avatar Hallelujah Mountain in 2010. The renaming was, indeed, part of a tourism strategy. Since then, more and more tourists have come to the site and explored its connection with the movie.

The name helps add layers of mythic and artistic meanings to a natural wonder, which eventually blurs the boundary between fantasy and reality.

Geological Formation and Unique Sandstone Pillars

The Avatar Mountains were shaped by nature’s work for over hundreds of millions of years. After the layers of sandstone were laid down, they were then lifted by movements of the earth. Over time, rain, wind, plant roots, and the freezing and thawing of water all together slowly wore the rock apart. In the humid climate of Hunan, softer rock eroded faster while harder layers stayed behind, leaving tall and narrow stone pillars. Unlike limestone hills, these are sandstone formations, which explains their sharp, upright shapes. As cliffs broke away, many isolated columns were left standing, each with a unique look.
