If you can only add one natural attraction to your Dunhuang tour,Ā then make it Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake.
The most magical scene is the two seemingly incompatible landscapes that have coexisted for thousands of years: the āsingingā sand dunes and Crescent Lake, a pool living in the shifting sand for over two thousand years.
How did they get their names? Well, the sand dunes produce a low, lingering hum when the wind blows across, so people call it āMingsha Mountainā (Singing Sand Mountain). Crescent Lake (Yueya Spring), meanwhile, lies like a crescent moon in the sea of sand. And it is also called the āFirst Spring of the Desert.ā
For most visitors, Mingsha Mountain and Crescent LakeĀ are where their imagination of Dunhuang comes true. Camel rides, sandboarding, āFlying Apsarasā themed photography, and starlit concerts–feel free to enjoy these iconic sand activities.

Top Things to Do in Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake
The natural scenery in Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake is astonishing, but not the greatest appeal. Most visitors are coming for the interactive activities. So weād recommend spending at least half a day here to combine sightseeing with recreational experiences.
Sandboarding ā The Classic Experience
Sandboarding is one of the most popular activities at Mingsha Mountain.
You can ride sandboards down slopes that are dozens of meters high, and that would be the greatest time to hear the āsinging sandā phenomenon created by the friction of sand grains.
Tip: Itās most comfortable to sandboard in the evening after the sand has cooled down. During the day, the sand can be scorching. Avoid wearing shorts, since the high temperature will burn your skin, and the descent can cause chafing.
Camel Rides Through the Sand Sea
A camel ride really guides you to capture the spirit of the Silk Road.
You can see a large herd of camels in the scenic area. You can take one and follow a set route across the dunes, imagining yourself in the scene of ancient caravans traversing the Hexi Corridor. The camel caravan at dusk is particularly spectacular and is one of the most beloved scenes for photography enthusiasts.
Tip: Camel guides can assist with taking photos during your ride for a small gratuity of about 20 RMB (2.78 USD). This is a common practice and is completely at your discretion.

UTV Dune Surfing and Dune Biking
If youāre a thrill seeker, you can opt for UTV desert off-road vehicles or desert motorcycles.
The vehicles race at high speeds through undulating sand dunes, and you may feel like taking a ādesert roller coaster.ā In recent years, this has become one of the most popular activities among young visitors.
Aerial Views: Helicopters, Hot Air Balloons, and Gliders
Crescent Lake is so beautiful that you may want to take a panoramic view, thus aerial activities are well worth trying. From a birdās-eye view, youāll see the crescent-shaped emerald-green lake suddenly appearing in the middle of a golden sea of sand. The whole experience is far more visually striking than from the ground.
We recommend hot air balloons, sightseeing helicopters, and powered gliders. Among these, gliders are typically less expensive than helicopters. You can freely choose the experience based on your budget.
Tip:Ā The airspace directly above and surrounding Crescent Lake is a restricted zone. Flying drones without authorization will result in penalties. To capture a panoramic view, you can climb to the top of a sand dune or participate in the aerial activities mentioned above.
Hanfu and Feitian Costume Photography
Dunhuangās Feitian culture is also a highlight for sightseeing, and it originates from the nearby Mogao Caves. For the best photos, you can go inside the Mingsha Mountain Scenic Area, find the photography studios, and change into Hanfu, Western Region princess outfits, or Feitian fairy costumes.
You can climb the sand dunes for your photoshoot, with Crescent LakeĀ (Yueya Spring)Ā and the desert as your backdrop; every shot will be stunning.
Best shooting times: 2 hours before sunset (golden side lighting) + the āblue hourā (approximately 20ā30 minutes after sunset; you can get dream-like shots of your silhouettes after Yueya Spring is illuminated).

10,000-Person Starry Sky Concert ā The Hottest āDesert Raveā
In recent years, Dunhuangās night activities have gotten to the next level. During the peak summer and fall seasons (mid-June to late October), desert concerts, starlit concerts, and light and sound shows are frequently held.
As night falls, the sand dunes become a natural audience seating area, offering an experience far surpassing that of a conventional theater.
Tip: No additional tickets are required. You only need to bring a picnic blanket or small cushion, and remember to dress in warm layers (temperatures drop sharply in the desert at night).

Desert Camping on the Outskirts of the Scenic Area – Official Campgrounds
If you want to experience a true desert night, we recommend joining a desert camping tour. A typical camping tour allows you to enjoy the desert sunset, a BBQ dinner, a bonfire party, stargazing, photography, and the sunrise the next morning.
April through October is the prime camping season. Dunhuang, unlike major cities, is far from light pollution, so you can expect to see the Milky Way with the naked eye.
Tip: Campsites usually offer pick-up and drop-off services from downtown Dunhuang. There are three things you need to confirm before booking: 1) whether private restroom facilities are available, 2) if windproof tents or blankets are provided, and 3) whether meals are included.

What Are the Unique Features of Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake?
Although they are often mentioned together, Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Lake are actually two completely different natural landscapes.
Mingsha Mountain
Mingsha Mountain is a vast dune system stretching for dozens of kilometers.
Key features include:
- Fine, soft sand grains
- A āsingingā sound when the sand shifts or slides
- Constantly changing dune shapes due to wind
- Spectacular sunrise and sunset views
One of the most fascinating things you may see is that even though countless visitors leave footprints on the dunes, the wind can always restore the sand to a smooth surface overnight.
Crescent Lake
Crescent Lake is one of the most famous desert oases in China.
Key features include:
- Crescent-moon shape
- Approximately 100 meters in length
- Surrounded entirely by towering sand dunes
- Has never dried up for over 2,000 years
- Scenic reflections of ancient buildings and reeds along the shore
Its long-term existence is believed to be related to
- underground water replenishment
- surrounding terrain and wind patterns
- a unique ecological system.
Indeed, itās a great wonder that the sand here does not bury the spring, and the spring never dries up in the desert.

High-SPF sunscreen + sunglasses + wide-brim hat + windproof scarf/mask |
UV levels are extremely high. Strong winds with blowing sand can occur suddenly without a sign. |

Important Rules (Avoid These Mistakes)
- Do not step into or reach into the fenced area around Crescent Lake. It is strictly prohibited to protect the water source.
- Drones are strictly forbidden. Do not chance it, as security systems are in place and violations will be detected.
- Always use the designated wooden stairways when climbing the dunes. Do not create or follow āshortcutā off-trail routes. Steep slopes and shifting sand can be more dangerous than you think, and this behavior may damage the natural dune structure.
- Camel ride photo services along the route are completely optional. If you are not interested, simply decline with a polite gesture or smile.
Is Mingsha Mountain Worth Visiting at Night?
Absolutely. A night visit to Mingsha Mountain is highly recommended.
At night, the desert will get a much more comfortable temperature. You may be charmed by the breathtaking views of the sunset glow, the desert under the stars, the illuminated Crescent Lake, and even occasional desert starry-sky concerts.
