Note: The best time to visit Yuanyang Rice Terraces is during November to April, when the landscapes are the most spectacular. Irrigated with water, the rice terraces look like mirrors, reflecting the sky. The sea of clouds also appears frequently.

Tropical Charm Route: Xishuangbanna

• Time needed: 3 – 5 days
• Best for: Tourists who prefer tropical scenery and Dai ethnic culture.

Xishuangbanna is situated at the southernmost end of Yunnan and is adjacent to Laos and Myanmar. Tropical forests, Dai ethic culture, Buddhist temples and bustling night markets are all its highlights. The travel experience is quite different from the classic route and it is well worth visiting.

What is the Weather like in Yunnan?

The climate in Yunnan is mild all year round, but there are significant regional differences. Generally, spring and autumn are the best times to visit Yunnan.

Kunming: Known as “Spring City”, Kunming has an annual average temperature of 15 – 17 ℃. So, it allows travelers to plan a tour there all year round. But spring and autumn are generally the best seasons. In spring, flowers are in full bloom and there are occasional rains. It is the best time for outdoor activities and flower appreciation. In autumn, there are more sunny days and less rainfall. Red leaves and harvest terraces will feast your eyes.

Dali and Lijiang: Overall, the weather in Dali and Lijiang is moderate. It is neither too hot nor too cold all year. The best time to visit is from late September to November during the crisp autumn. It is also the golden time to witness the breathtaking moment of “Golden Sunlight on the Snow Mountains”. Remember to avoid the rainy season (July and August) in summer.

Shangri-La: At a higher altitude, the temperature in Shangri-La is significantly lower with an annual average temperature of 12 ℃. Besides, the temperature difference is also large between day and night.

About the best time for a tour, May – June features pleasant weather and is the flowering period for rhododendrons, making it an ideal time for hiking and photography. From September to November, it is easy for you to capture memorable photos of clear snow mountains and blue skies.

Xishuangbanna: Belonging to a tropical rainforest climate, Xishuangbanna is more humid and hotter. So, November – April is considered the best time, when the average temperature ranges from 15 to 26 ℃ and the weather is relatively dry with little rain.

What to wear:

In most places, it is usually advised to wear short-sleeved shirts, thin long-sleeved shirts and sun-protective clothing at daytime in spring and autumn. However, there are many places with significant temperature differences between day and night in Yunnan, especially for cities at a high altitude such as Shangri-La, so a thicker coat is required.

What to pack:

• Rain Gear for the Wet Season: A folding umbrella or a light raincoat is a necessity if travelling during the rainy season from late June to August.
• Sun Protection & Altitude Preparation: In high plateau areas, especially Shangri-La and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the violet ray is strong, making sunscreen, sunglasses and sun hats essential items. Besides, do not forget to take anti-altitude sickness drugs. Please consult a professional doctor, who can give you reasonable advice according to your body condition.
• Portable Oxygen: The oxygen bottle is useful in attractions at a high altitude. If you plan to visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, it is cost-effective to purchase it in advance at a pharmacy in Lijiang City (CNY 15 – 25 per bottle). The scenic area also offers oxygen bottles, but the price is higher, thus it is recommended for emergencies only. For a tour to Shangri-La, just buy it at any pharmacy in downtown area.
• Mosquito repellent products: They are indispensable in Xishuangbanna due to to the lush rainforest.

How to Travel to & Travel Around Yunnan?

Arrival in Yunnan: Flight and High-speed Train

Flight: The most common way to arrive in Yunnan. Now, the flights from major cities, such as Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Chongqing, Wuhan, Nanjing and Lhasa, to/from Kunming, Lijiang, Dali, Shangri-La and Xishuangbanna are all in operation.

Note: Kunming Changshui International Airport is the main international gateway in Yunnan with direct flights to many countries. It also operates the densest domestic flights compared with other cities.

High-speed Train: Another convenient and cost-effective way to get to Yunnan. There are direct trains to many cities from Kunming, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Guilin, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Changsha, Zhengzhou, etc.

Travel Around Yunnan: High-speed Train

Flights, trains and long-distance buses are all well-connected and can take you to travel to and from each city conveniently and efficiently.

Every day, dense high-speed trains run from Kunming to Dali, from Dali to Lijiang and from Lijiang to Shangri-La. The travel time is about 2 – 3 hours, 1.5 – 2.5 hours and 1 – 1.5 hours.

About the high-speed trains to Xishuangbanna, Kunming operates about 20 departures daily with the fastest train taking about 3 hours. Dali and Lijiang operate only 1 departure every day.

If you plan to head to Jianshui County or Yuanyang County, you need to take a long-distance bus or charter a bus from Kunming. The journey takes about 2 hours and 1.5 hours, respectively.

Where to Stay in Yunnan?

Kunming

• Hotel types: Vary from 3-star to 5-star hotels

Kunming is the most suitable to be the first stop and transfer city. When booking the hotels, it is better to choose those near Kunming Station, Nanping Street, Dianchi Lake and Green Lake. For first timers, staying near Green Lake is the most worry-free, as it is convenient to enjoy the scenery around (especially feeding the red-billed gull in winter) and taste meals.

Dali

The most common choices are areas near Dali Ancient City, Shaxi Ancient Town and Erhai Lake.

3. On the first day of arrival, do not take a shower in case of getting a cold, which may trigger or worsen the symptoms of altitude sickness.

Xishuangbanna

It is highly recommended to live near Gaozhuang Night Market, offering you great convenience for dining and travelling around. If you expect a quieter environment, choose the hotels in downtown Jinghong. Another popular choice is the Songkran Square, the gathering place of 4-star and 5-star hotels.
