How to Plan a Yunnan Tour for Expats in China

Written by Candice Zhao |

When planning a trip to Yunnan, as expats living in China, you may want to know more practical details beyond the typical travel guide. This article is not a general introduction to the scenic spots. Instead, we will share the most practical travel information based on the actual needs of international travelers.

For first-timers, the most classic route is to start your tour from Kunming and then follow the route of Dali – Lijiang – Shangri-La to experience the iconic cultures and scenery. The tour needs about 8 days. Xishuangbanna, on the other hand, it is well-known for the tropical charm and is recommended to plan a separate tour. Understanding the classic route gives you a reliable starting point for customizing your own trip

What is the Weather like in Yunnan?

The climate in Yunnan is mild all year round, but there are significant regional differences. Generally, spring and autumn are the best times to visit Yunnan.

Kunming: Known as ā€œSpring Cityā€, Kunming has an annual average temperature of 15 – 17 ā„ƒ. So, it allows travelers to plan a tour there all year round. But spring and autumn are generally the best seasons. In spring, flowers are in full bloom and there are occasional rains. It is the best time for outdoor activities and flower appreciation. In autumn, there are more sunny days and less rainfall. Red leaves and harvest terraces will feast your eyes.

Dali and Lijiang: Overall, the weather in Dali and Lijiang is moderate. It is neither too hot nor too cold all year. The best time to visit is from late September to November during the crisp autumn. It is also the golden time to witness the breathtaking moment of ā€œGolden Sunlight on the Snow Mountainsā€. Remember to avoid the rainy season (July and August) in summer.

Shangri-La: At a higher altitude, the temperature in Shangri-La is significantly lower with an annual average temperature of 12 ā„ƒ. Besides, the temperature difference is also large between day and night.

Xishuangbanna: Belonging to a tropical rainforest climate, Xishuangbanna is more humid and hotter. So,Ā November – AprilĀ is considered the best time, when the average temperature ranges from 15 to 26 ā„ƒ and the weather is relatively dry with little rain.

What to wear:

In most places, it is usually advised to wear short-sleeved shirts, thin long-sleeved shirts and sun-protective clothing at daytime in spring and autumn. However, there are many places with significant temperature differences between day and night in Yunnan, especially for cities at a high altitude such as Shangri-La, so a thicker coat is required.

What to pack:

  • Rain Gear for the Wet Season: AĀ folding umbrella or a light raincoatĀ is a necessity if travelling during the rainy season from late June to August.
  • Sun Protection & Altitude Preparation: In high plateau areas, especially Shangri-La and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the violet ray is strong, making sunscreen, sunglasses and sun hats essential items. Besides, do not forget to take anti-altitude sickness drugs. Please consult a professional doctor, who can give you reasonable advice according to your body condition.
  • Portable Oxygen: The oxygen bottle is useful in attractions at a high altitude. If you plan to visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, it is cost-effective to purchase it in advance at a pharmacy in Lijiang City (CNY 15 – 25 per bottle). The scenic area also offers oxygen bottles, but the price is higher, thus it is recommended for emergencies only. For a tour to Shangri-La, just buy it at any pharmacy in downtown area.
  • Mosquito repellent products: They are indispensable in Xishuangbanna due to to the lush rainforest.

The Most Worthwhile Ethnic Festival for Expats

Yunnan is home to a total of 25 ethnic minorities and each has its own characteristic festivals. As expats, taking part in these festivals is the most in-depthĀ way to experience the Yunnan culture.

The bonfire party in Square Street in Lijiang Ancient Town is a long-lasting tradition of local Naxi ethnic group, allowing you to deeply experience the ethnic customs. It is held daily from 19:00 to 20:30. The local Naxi people hold hands with tourists, form a circle and dance to the rhythm of Dongba ancient music or ethnic music. You will find their steps are simple but full of enthusiasm. Just join them.

Practical Tips for Joining in Festivals

  1. When taking photos of local people, smile at them and ask for permission. Also, show respect to those who do not want to be photographed.
  2. During the major events, stay alert in crowded areas and keep a close eye on your belongings.

Practical Travel Tips for Expats

  • Passport Copies: Take photos of the first page and visa page of your passport for easy carrying
  • Mobile Payment: Though WeChat Pay and Alipay have covered most areas, it is still necessary to prepare about CNY 500 – 1000 in case you travel to a remote area with poor signals.
  • Food Safety: June to September is the wild mushroom season. Please taste it in regular restaurants and avoid picking and cooking them by yourself.
  • Specialties Purchasing: Puer tea, silver ornaments and flower cakes are the most popular souvenirs. It is better to purchase in the licensed stores in downtown area. In scenic areas, prices may be 30–40% higher.
  • Traps to Avoid: Do not join in “low-price tours” without a contract, and do not purchase so-called “wild Chinese medicinal materials” by the roadside.
  • Useful Apps: Didi (car hailing), Meituan/Dianping (dining), Baidu Map/Amap (navigation)
  • Transportation booking: During peak season, the tickets for bullet trains are in short supply. It is essential to book in advance through travel apps such as Trip.com.
  • Respect local customs: When visiting temples or ethnic villages, dress properly. And learn about the local taboos in advance.
  • Altitude Sickness: After arriving at the high plateau area, avoid strenuous exercise and drinking wine. Leave enough time for your body to acclimatize to the altitude.
