How to Get to Harbin: Flights and Trains
Harbin is an international city friendly to foreigners. Whether you take a flight or train, it is very convenient to get to Harbin. Those who are from countries bordering China may take a direct flight to Harbin. If not, take a flight to Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou first, and then transfer to Harbin by air or train.
Arriving by Air: Harbin Taiping International Airport (HRB)
Some neighboring Asian countries like Russia, Japan, South Korea and Thailand have direct flights to Harbin. If you depart from Europe or America, itās advised to take a flight to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, or Xiāan first, and then change to a domestic flight to Harbin Taiping International Airport. This airport is about 33 kilometers from the city center, with VIP lounges, cafes and fast-food restaurants.
Arriving by Train: Harbin’s Main Railway Stations
In case that you have already arrived in a major city of China such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang and Dalian, taking a high-speed train to Harbin is a comfortable and economic way of transportation.
At present, there are altogether four railway stations in Harbin, but only two are mainly used by travelers, i.e., Harbin Railway Station and Harbin West Railway Station. With its advantaged location adjacent to St. Sophia Cathedral and Central StreetĀ at the city center, Harbin Railway Station is the first choice of travelers. By comparison, Harbin West Railway Station is about 10 kilometers from the city proper, but has more high-speed trains.
Generally speaking, it takes about 5.5 hours from Beijing to Harbin by high-speed railway, 6.5 hours from Tianjin, 4.5 hours from Dalian, and 2 hours from Shenyang.

Get to Harbin from Major Cities
Get to Harbin from Beijing
Well, itās so wise of you to choose Beijing as the transfer station because flights and high-speed trains to Harbin are readily accessible there. Every day, there are plenty of flights from BeijingĀ Capital International Airport and Daxing Airport to Harbin, with a cost ofĀ aroundĀ CNY 1,500 – 2,000. A single trip takes 2 hours or so.
The majority of high-speed trains from Beijing to HarbinĀ depart from Chaoyang Railway Station, while two are from Beijing Railway Station and one from Beijing West Railway Station. A first-classĀ seat is priced at CNY 952 and aĀ second-classĀ seat CNY 595. TheĀ duration is 4.5-5 hours.
Get to Harbin from Shanghai
Flight is preferred by most tourists for a travel from Shanghai to Harbin, because it takes only 2.5 – 3 hours. And there are dense direct flights from 07:00 in the early morning to 22:00 in the late evening, you can depart at any time you want. The price is about CNY 490+.
Compared with flights, the choices of trains are very limited. Every day, only one bullet train transports passengers from Shanghai Hongqiao to Harbin West. It departs from 09:33 and arrives at 21:38, which means you will have to spend the entire daytime on the train. A second-class seat costs CNY 1025. In addition, one normal train runs from Shanghai to Harbin West every day with a duration of 24 hours and a cost of CNY 463.5 for a hard sleeper.
Get to Harbin from Guangzhou
Considering the long distance from Guangzhou to Harbin, travelers also take the flight as the first choice. The direct flights operate from 07:30 – 20:00. There are also a few transfer flights at around 06:30 and 17:00 every day. As for the duration and cost, it is about 4 – 4.5 hours and CNY 700+, respectively.
Unfortunately, no high-speed train is available currently. So tourists can only travel by normal train. Every day, 3 trains leave from Guangzhou Baiyun Station at 07:20, 18:20 and 19:57, respectively, which are Z112, Z236 and T227. The former two take a relatively short time, about 34 – 35 hours, while the last one takes about 44.5 hours. If you plan to take the train, remember to bring toiletries and enough food. A hard sleeper is priced at CNY 576 – 595.
Get to Harbin from Shenzhen
To travel from Shenzhen to Harbin, the flight also ranks top one as above. Different from other cities, no night flights are provided in Shenzhen, but during daytime, about 20 direct flights and about 10 transfer flights can be chosen. A single trip takes about 4.5 hours and costs CNY 700+.
Also, no bullet train runs between the two cities. And only one normal train Z310 can escort you from Shenzhen to Harbin. Taking about 37 hours, you will take the train at 17:42 at Shenzhen East and arrive at Harbin at 06:53 on the third day. The price for a hard sleeper is CNY 586.
Get to Harbin from Hong Kong
Though without direct flights, there is no need to worry. Numerous transfer flights are provided by several airlines in the whole day. You can also leave at your preferred time. And the flight will take you to Harbin in about 7 – 12 hours with a cost of CNY 900+.
Between Harbin and Hong Kong, neither high-speed trains nor normal trains are available. So if you plan to take the train, a transfer is also needed. Beijing, Guangzhou and Shijiazhuang are all recommended. Based on the choices of trains, the cost ranges from CNY 700 – 1,700 and the travel time ranges from 20.5 – 39 hours.
From Harbin Airport to Downtown
Upon arrival at Harbin Airport, you may ask how to get to the city center. Currently, there is no subway linking the airport and city center, yet itās complicated and time-consuming if you take public buses. Therefore, airport shuttle buses, taxis or private pickup service are highly recommended.
