If you’re traveling to Xi’an in the winter, apart from visiting iconic attractions like the Terracotta Army, City Wall, and Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, you can also go on a ski day trip.

Although Xi’an is not commonly known for its skiing destinations, there are plenty of ski resorts around Xi’an. For first-time skiers, Zhaojin and Cuihua Mountain are two of the best options. If you’ve had some experience with skiing, Aoshan would be the top choice. If you have limited time or are not traveling in winter, look into the indoor ski resorts in Xi’an.

Most outdoor ski resorts near Xi’an open in December and run through February. Even if it doesn’t snow in the city, modern snowmaking techniques will still guarantee great skiing experiences.

1. Aoshan Ski Resort — Best for Experienced Skiers

If you already have some experience with skiing and would like to go beyond the typical 2-3-hour beginner experience, Aoshan Ski Resort is worth making a trip to.

Aoshan is located in Taibai County, Baoji, Shaanxi Province, relatively far from Xi’an city center. It may not be suitable for visitors who are just looking for their first skiing experience. It’s best to set aside a whole day for this resort. You can even spend a night there.

The biggest advantage of Aoshan is its scale and specialization. It has hosted stages of the Super Orienteering Ski Open, a top national skiing event. Compared to other ski resorts near Xi’an that mostly cater to beginners, Aoshan is the better choice for experienced skiers, usually with a longer ski season.

Highlights

  • The best-known professional ski destination in Shaanxi Province
  • More trails to choose from, longer ski season
  • Suitable for experienced skiers
  • Great for 1-2-day ski trips from Xi’an

Suitable for

  • intermediate skiers, experienced skiers, visitors who are willing to set aside 1-2 days for skiing in Xi’an

If it is your first time skiing, there is no need to make a trip this far. But if you’re passionate about the sport and have some experience in it, Aoshan Ski Resort will definitely be worth the trip.

2. Zhaojin International Ski Resort — Best Overall Experience

If you are thinking about a full ski day trip from Xi’an, Zhaojin International Ski Resort is worth your consideration.

The resort is located in Zhaojin, Tongchuan, Shaanxi Province. It covers about 1,000 mu (roughly 165 acres), with 150,000 square meters of snowmaking area. It has 8 trails, 5 magic carpets, and 1 cable car, and is currently the largest ski resort in Shaanxi Province.

For your first time skiing, you can practice in the beginner’s area. With some experience, there are more slopes to choose from. It is also very family-friendly, with a snow play area for kids.

Highlights

  • Largest ski resort in Shaanxi Province
  • Suitable for both beginners and experienced skiers
  • Magic carpets and cable car available, as well as a snow play area for kids
  • Same-day roundtrip from Xi’an

Suitable for

  • First-time skiers, families, friend groups, visitors looking for a full-day experience

If you have over 5 days for your Xi’an tour and don’t want to go too far outside the city, I’d highly recommend Zhaojin.

3. Cuihua Mountain Ski Resort — Best for First-Time Visitors

If you’re traveling to Xi’an for the first time and have never experienced skiing, Cuihua Mountain Ski Resort may be a good option for you. Located in Chang’an District of Xi’an, it is very convenient to reach from the city. Apart from skiing, you can also see the snowy landscape in the mountains if you visit Xi’an in the winter.

The ski trails are about 800 meters long, which cater to the general public instead of professional skiers.

The biggest advantage of Cuihua Mountain Ski Resort is its convenient location in Xi’an. If the focus of your trip is the iconic attractions of Xi’an like the Terracotta Army and ancient City Wall, and you only wish to experience skiing on one day, you won’t have to spend too much time on the road.

Highlights

  • Located in Chang’an District of Xi’an
  • Friendly for first-time skiers
  • Great for a half-day or full-day trip
  • Beautiful winter scenery of the Qinling Mountains

4. Xi’an BONSKI / Xi’an Hot Snow Miracle — Best Indoor Skiing Site

Most outdoor ski resorts near Xi’an are not open before November or after March. If you are traveling outside the winter months, you can still go skiing at Xi’an BONSKI.

Xi’an BONSKI makes year-round skiing in Xi’an possible without the restrictions of the outdoor venues. The resort has beginner and intermediate sections, as well as other snow activities. Different ticket options may include equipment like ski clothes, boots, skis, and helmets.

For travelers from tropical regions like Singapore and Malaysia who have never experienced skiing, indoor skiing may be easier for a first experience.

Highlights

  • Skiing available year-round
  • Not affected by weather conditions
  • Friendly to beginners and families with kids
  • Located in the city of Xi’an

If you’d like to see the winter scenery in the mountains, you should definitely visit an outdoor ski resort near Xi’an. But if you’re only seeking a first skiing experience, indoor skiing will be easier.

5. Bailuyuan Ski Resort — Best for a Short Ski Experience

Bailuyuan Ski Resort has been popular among locals and visitors for a long time. Its advantage is not the scale but how close it is to the city.

If you’re happy with a 2-3-hour ski experience and would like to return to the city after that, Bailuyuan would be a great option for you, especially for first-time skiers, travelers with kids, or those with limited time.

Visitor Feedback

Visitors from Malaysia and Singapore have shared their first skiing experiences on Tripadvisor, recommending Bailuyuan for beginners and visitors with kids. It’s a great resort for a casual ski experience, but if you already have some experience with skiing, I would recommend Zhaojin or Aoshan.

How to Plan a Ski Day Trip from Xi’an

If this is your first visit to Xi’an, I don’t recommend prioritizing a ski trip over your other plans in the city. Here’s an example of a Xi’an itinerary for your reference.

Day 1: Xi’an arrival

Day 2: Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum & making your own mini clay figure

Day 3: Xi’an City Wall & Giant Wild Goose Pagoda & Night views

Day 4: ski day trip in or around Xi’an

Day 5: Xi’an free exploration or departure

Zhaojin or Cuihua Mountain are great for winter day trips from Xi’an. For visiting Aoshan, I recommend setting aside 1-2 days.

More Essential Tips for Skiing in Xi’an

Best Time to Ski Near Xi’an

The outdoor ski season in Xi’an is usually from late December to February.

The specific opening dates of the resorts depend on a few factors: temperature, snowmaking conditions, and each resort’s operating plans. Make sure you check the specific dates before your Xi’an winter trip.

If you can be flexible with your dates, try to make your trip on weekdays. During the winter, expect bigger crowds on weekends, during the winter school holiday, and around Spring Festival. There may be longer lines for renting equipment, finding a ski instructor, taking the magic carpet, or the cable car.

Can You Ski in Xi’an Without Natural Snow?

Yes, skiing in Xi’an is still possible without natural snow.

The city area of Xi’an does not see snow every day during the winter. Lots of ski resorts near Xi’an may still open because most make artificial snow. So not having any natural snow does not mean that the resorts will be closed.

If you’re really hoping to see snow in China, I wouldn’t suggest planning your trip around snowfall, because snowfall in Xi’an varies from year to year.

Is Skiing Near Xi’an Foreigner-Friendly?

Most ski resorts near Xi’an welcome international tourists, but there may not always be service in English. Sometimes you may need to make your booking in Chinese or through WeChat with things like purchasing your ticket, renting equipment, putting down a deposit, or booking a ski instructor.

I suggest double-checking what your ticket includes, how to reserve an instructor, and the rental process. Save the Chinese name of the resort and its address on your phone beforehand.

  • To skip all of those complications, you can contact China Xian Tour. We can help you check the latest status of the resorts, ticket and instructor information, and arrange your transportation from Xi’an.

Do You Need to Bring Ski Equipment?

You don’t usually need to bring your own skis or ski boots. Most resorts have rental services.

Before booking your ticket, check whether it includes:

  • skis, ski boots, poles
  • helmet
  • ski clothing, gloves
  • locker
  • lift or magic carpet
  • insurance

Some items or services may not always be included in your ticket price, especially ski clothing, gloves, helmets, lockers, and personal instructors.

Do You Need a Ski Instructor?

If it’s your first ever skiing experience, I suggest that you work with an instructor.

For your first time, learn to stand on the skis, control your speed, stop, and make simple turns.

If you’re just looking to experience it, 2-3 hours is usually enough. It takes a lot of energy, so you don’t necessarily need a full day.

What to Wear for Skiing in Xi’an

The key is to stay warm, windproof, and waterproof. I suggest that you prepare:

  • a warm base layer
  • a fleece jacket or a lightweight down jacket
  • a windproof and waterproof ski jacket
  • snow pants
  • waterproof gloves
  • ski socks
  • neck warmer

Make sure that your clothing is waterproof, especially gloves and pants. Falling over is normal, even more so for beginners. If your clothes get wet, you’ll feel cold quickly.

Can You Go Skiing in Xi’an with Kids?

Yes, you can definitely go skiing in Xi’an with kids. For a first experience, Xi’an BONSKI, Cuihua Mountain, and Zhaojin are the best options.

If your kids only want to play with snow, they don’t have to learn how to ski. There are resorts with snow play areas for you and your family.

Is Xi’an Worth Visiting Just for Skiing?

If the main purpose of your China trip is skiing, places like Northeast China, Chongli, and Xinjiang will have more developed facilities. But if you’re visiting Xi’an and would like to spend a day on a unique skiing experience, it’ll definitely be worth it.

Especially for visitors from warmer regions like Singapore and Malaysia, this may just be an unforgettable day of your Xi’an trip.

China Xian Tour can help you find the best resort for you depending on your travel dates and experience, and work it into your Xi’an itinerary.
