Xiangshawan Scenic Area

Xiangshawan Scenic Area, also referred to as Resonant Sand Bay or Whistling Dune Bay, is a 5A-level desert attraction situated within the Kubuqi Desert in Inner Mongolia. The area is renowned for its resonant sands and dunes, which produce melodic sounds akin to musical instruments when people step on or slide down them. Spanning approximately 50 square kilometers, Xiangshawan Scenic Area boasts a unique crescent shape.

In addition to its natural beauty, Xiangshawan Scenic Area is a popular destination for desert tourism and entertainment. Visitors can partake in various activities and amenities, including camel riding, sand sliding, jeep safaris, cable cars, sand sculpture parks, Mongolian wedding parks, nomad theaters, and more. Often referred to as the “Disneyland in the Desert,” the area also provides an opportunity for visitors to experience Mongolian culture and customs by sampling roast lamb, drinking horse milk wine, watching wrestling and horse racing, and more.

Resonant Sands and Dunes: The area is famous for its resonant sands and dunes, which produce musical instrument-like sounds when stepped on or slid down from.

Best Time to Visit Xiangshawan Scenic Area

The recommended time to visit Xiangshawan Scenic Area is from May to October when the weather is warm and comfortable, the rainfall is moderate, and the desert scenery is spectacular. This season is also ideal for avoiding dust storms that may occur in the Kubuqi Desert.

Summer and autumn are considered the best seasons for enjoying desert activities such as camel riding, sand sliding, and jeep safaris. Early autumn, from September to early October, is the perfect time to witness the contrast of water and sand at Yemingsha (Moonlight Lake). However, visitors should prepare for the significant temperature difference between day and night, which can range from 10°C to 25°C.

Winter is also a unique time to visit the Xiangshawan Scenic Area and enjoy a different type of desert scenery with snow and ice. From December to February, the area hosts the “Xiangshawan New Year Carnival” and offers a desert ski resort for visitors.

Mausoleum of Genghis Khan: A sacred shrine dedicated to the founder of the Mongol Empire, offering visitors an opportunity to learn about his life and accomplishments while observing traditional Mongolian worship ceremonies.

Ordos Grassland: A vast grassland with stunning views of blue skies, white clouds, green grass, and herds of horses and sheep. Visitors can immerse themselves in the nomadic lifestyle and culture of the Mongolian people.

Ordos Museum: A contemporary museum showcasing the history, culture, and ecology of the Ordos and Inner Mongolia. The museum’s unique golden egg or sand dune-shaped architecture is a sight to behold.

Qixing Lake Desert Ecological Park: A scenic location offering a combination of desert and lake views. Visitors can enjoy various activities such as boating, fishing, sand sliding, and camel riding.

 

How to Get to Xiangshawan Scenic Area

By Train:

Take a train from either Hohhot or Baotou to Wulateqianqi, a nearby county to Xiangshawan. The journey takes approximately 4-5 hours from Hohhot and 3 hours from Baotou, with ticket prices ranging from 165 yuan to 300 yuan, depending on the train class and speed. From Wulateqianqi, visitors can reach Xiangshawan Scenic Area by taxi or bus, which takes around 30 minutes.

By Car:

Driving from either Hohhot or Baotou to Xiangshawan Scenic Area is also possible, which takes around 3-4 hours. The distance is approximately 280 km from Hohhot and 180 km from Baotou, with a well-maintained road and picturesque scenery along the way. Additionally, visitors can opt to rent a car with a driver in Hohhot or Baotou for approximately 500 yuan to 800 yuan per day.
