Compared to July and August, the biggest advantage of visiting Xi’an in June is not that it is cooler, but that the influx of tourists on summer holiday has not yet started. Once July arrives, there will be a significant increase in tourist volume while the weather gets hotter and more humid.

Another advantage of planning your Xi’an trip in June is that the daylight hours will be long. Around the end of the month, the time for sunset is usually close to 8:00 PM. You won’t have to rush to visit all the attractions before it gets dark. Take a break around midday, when it is the hottest, then go out to visit the City Wall, Big Wild Goose Pagoda, or the old city district later in the afternoon.

If you don’t do well with the heat, the best time to visit Xi’an is usually April to May and September to October. If you can only visit during the summer, I would definitely recommend doing so in June instead of July or August.

What to Wear in Xi’an in June

For touring in the city, dress in summer wear like short sleeves, light trousers, dresses, and sneakers. Make sure you pack sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a light umbrella for the sun and unexpected showers.

There will be very little shading on the City Wall. You will be a lot more exposed under the sun on a clear day. If you’re planning on a cycling tour on it, sun protection would be particularly important.

For traveling to Mount Huashan, I suggest packing a light jacket. It may be hot in the city area of Xi’an in June, but it can still be a little cool and windy in the mountains. You will feel the difference after you take the cable car up or if you encounter a change in the weather condition.

Best Things to Do in Xi’an in June

1. Terracotta Warriors – Try to Visit in the Morning

If you are visiting the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum in June, I suggest starting your tour early in the morning.

Although the main pits are indoors, the whole scenic area is large, and you will do a fair amount of walking between the entrance and the different exhibition halls. Morning temperatures are lower, and I suggest allowing 2.5-3 hours for your visit.

After seeing the main pits, reserve for some time to see the bronze chariots. If it is a particularly hot day, you can return to the city for a break instead of adding another outdoor stop.

2. Ancient City Wall – Better Experience After 5 PM

You can cycle on the City Wall in June, but try to avoid the hottest time in the day.

You will have a great field of vision on the wall, but that also means there won’t be much shading. You will be directly exposed to the sun around noon and in the early afternoon. The heat may make your experience more tiring than enjoyable.

I recommend visiting the city wall after 5:00 PM. Around that time, the temperature starts to drop, and the sun won’t be so intense. The complete journey on the wall is 13.7 km. You don’t have to finish the whole thing — start at Yongning Gate, cycle a section, and walk part of the way back at your own pace.

As it gets closer to the time of sunset, look over the old city and the modern architecture in the distance from the City Wall. It’s a top thing to do in Xi’an in June.

3. Mount Huashan – Keep Your Dates Flexible

June is a great time to visit Mount Huashan. Check the weather forecast for the day you plan to go. The views are magnificent on a clear day with good visibility. But if you encounter continuous rainfall, thunderstorms, or low clouds, you may not get the travel experience you were hoping for.

If you are spending 3-4 days in Xi’an, I don’t recommend fixing your Huashan trip on day two or three. It’s better to remain flexible. Check the weather before your trip and plan your visit on the day with the most promising weather condition.

After you arrive at Mount Huashan, you can take the cable car up to save time and energy, then decide whether you should take a hike or which hiking route to take depending on the weather condition of the day.

4. Big Wild Goose Pagoda & Datang Everbright City – Visit Around Dusk

Daylight hours are long in Xi’an in June, so you don’t have to visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda area during the hottest hours of the afternoon.

If you want to go inside Daci’en Temple, do that before sunset. Then have dinner near the pagoda and head to Datang Everbright City once it gets dark. It is one of the top things to do in Xi’an at night.

The temperature drops after dark, making it a great time for a stroll. The lighting, street views, and night performances all add to the experience. If you’ve already done enough walking during the day, you don’t have to see everything in one evening — stop along the way and linger wherever something catches your eye.

5. Small Wild Goose Pagoda & Xi’an Museum – Best Afternoon Plan for a Hot Day

If one day of your trip is particularly hot, plan the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Xi’an Museum for the afternoon.

The pagoda sits in a classical garden with courtyards, greenery, and plenty of shade, and the museum galleries are a good place to spend the hottest two hours of the day.

What to Do in Xi’an on a Hot Day in June?

Good planning matters even more on a hot day in Xi’an in June. Here’s how I would handle it.

Make sure you keep your schedule flexible around the weather. That’s particularly important for traveling to Xi’an in June, especially for outdoor plans like cycling on the City Wall.

If you’ve already been to the Terracotta Warriors Museum in the morning, you can return to the city center around noon for lunch and a short rest, then go back out before sunset. You’ll enjoy it more than rushing between attractions all day.

If you don’t want to go back to the hotel in the afternoon, you can also find something to do indoors. For example, you can head to the Chang’an 12th Shichen Theme Block and wait out the hottest hours of the day indoors. Xi’an does get showers in June. If you see rain on the weather forecast, there’s no need to cancel your plans for the day. If you get caught in a sudden shower, sit down for lunch, switch to an indoor site, or rest at the hotel and head out again once it passes.

If you encounter continuous precipitation, thunderstorms, or strong wind, I suggest moving your Mount Huashan and City Wall plans first. Don’t risk your safety just to stick to the plan.

On a rainy day, you can plan for a visit to the Chang’an 12^th Shichen Theme Block or watch a Tang Dynasty music and dance show. Rain usually won’t disrupt your visit to the Terracotta Warriors Museum, but you will be walking around in the scenic area, so remember to bring your rain gear.
