Visa & Logistics for International Families

Visa Requirements for Families Visiting Chengdu from Abroad

At present, Chengdu is incredibly open to foreign visitors. Citizens from the designated 55 countries, such as the US, Canada, UK, France, and Germany, are eligible for the 240-hour visa-free transit policy if they hold an onward flight ticket to the third country or region. For certain countries, their citizens can enjoy a visa-free stay of not exceeding 30 days in China.

Only in case that the above policies do not apply to you, you need to apply for a tourist visa in advance.

Getting to & Traveling around Chengdu

Getting to: Frequent International Flights

Chengdu is an aviation hub in China’s western region. Dozens of international flights connect Chengdu and foreign cities daily, making it rather easy to get to. At present, two airports in Chengdu, namely Shuangliu (CTU) and Tianfu (TFU), are in service.

Tianfu Airport is mainly used for international flights, and about 60 kilometers from the city center. You can go downtown by metro line 18 or airport shuttle bus.

Foreigners already in China can travel to Chengdu by either domestic flight or high speed train.

Navigating Chengdu Public Transport

Chengdu is quite friendly to parents travelling with kids. The internationalized public transport system will make your trip very easy. Metros cover the main tourist sites and commercial zones, with complete barrier-free facilities and baby-care rooms. Public buses are a powerful supplement. There are also special tourist buses to some scenic spots like Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and Dujiangyan Irrigation System.

Generally speaking, you need to pay by scanning your QR code on WeChat Pay or Alipay. Children below 1.3 meters can take public transport for free. For more convenience, it’s recommended to take a taxi or call a car on Didi App to travel around.

Tips you need to know for travelling with kids in Chengdu:

  • Avoid rush hours. The metro usually operates between 6:00 am and 11:00pm. It is extremely crowded during 8:00-9:00am and 5:00-7:00pm on weekdays.
  • Some taxi drivers may not understand English, please download Amap and translation app in advance.
  • Use the elevator when transferring between different metro lines.
  • Don’t schedule the itinerary too tightly. Leave some gaps for unexpected delays.
  • Take a taxi instead of metro whenever necessary.

Family-friendly Activities & Attractions in Chengdu

1. Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding

  • Location: 1375, Panda Avenue, Chenghua District, Chengdu
  • Opening hours: 7:30am – 6:00pm from Mar. 16 to Oct. 31; 8:00am – 5:30pm from Nov. 1 to Mar. 15
  • Entrance fee: 55RMB, free for children below 1.3 meters
  • Recommended visiting time: 3 – 4 hours

Why we bring kids here? This is the world’s largest breeding base for giant pandas, where kids can witness the entire life cycle of pandas, from tiny cubs the size of a hand to fully grown adults. When kids see the fluffy panda babies rolling around, climbing trees and munching on bamboos, they will feel very excited. The base is extremely large, and walking the entire way with children would be exhausting. Therefore, it’s highly recommended to purchase a ticket for the sightseeing bus. It allows you to hop on and off at will. The most important of all, arrive early because pandas are the most active between 7:30 and 9:00am.

2. Dujiangyan Panda Center

  • Location: Huaizhong Road, Shiqiao Village, Qingchengshan Town, Dujiangyan City, Chengdu
  • Opening hours: 8:30am – 5:00pm
  • Entrance fee: 55RMB, free for children below 1.3 meters
  • Recommended visiting time: 1 – 3 hours

Compared with the bustling Chengdu Panda Base, Dujiangyan Panda Center is quieter and more relaxing. You will be surrounded by fresh air, lush bamboo forests, and fewer tourists. Children can run around on the grassy field and watch pandas leisurely eating bamboos on the hillside.

The pathways to the exhibition halls are relatively even, so that you can pull the stroller easily. There is also a science hall for kids to learn more about pandas and a souvenir shop with elegant panda gifts that will dazzle your eyes.

3. People’s Park

  • Location: 9, Citang Street, Qingyang District, Chengdu
  • Opening hours: 6:00am – 10:30pm
  • Entrance fee: Free
  • Recommended visiting time: 5 – 3 hours

This is a living example to see the slow lifestyle of local residents. It’s not a commercialized scenic spot, but rather a place for children to experience the real hustle and bustle of Chengdu. They can watch the retired elderly people play Tai Chi, sing Sichuan Opera, and play chess.

In the Heming Tea House inside the park, parents can order a cup of tea and spend a leisurely afternoon, while children observe how the masters pour water out from a gooseneck kettle.

Of course, don’t miss the jaw-dropping Sichuan Opera mask changing show that involves fire-spitting stunts.

  • Entrance fee: 80RMB for front mountain, 20RMB for rear mountain; free for children below 1.3 meters
  • Recommended visiting time: 4 – 5 hours for front mountain, 5 – 6 hours for rear mountain

Mount Qingcheng is only one hour’s drive from Chengdu, but it feels like another world. With very luxuriant forests, it’s a natural bar for breathing fresh air. In summer, the temperature here is 5 to 10℃ lower than surrounding urban areas. This makes it an ideal escape from summer heat.

Besides, it’s a Taoist mountain, so that kids can learn some knowledge about Chinese Taoism. They may also encounter Taoist monks on the way.

Here comes the question: is Mount Qingcheng difficult for kids to climb? Don’t worry, it’s not that difficult. If you choose to visit the front mountain, a cableway is available

5. Jinli Street

  • Location: 231, Wuhouci Street, Wuhou District, Chengdu
  • Opening hours: All day
  • Entrance fee: Free
  • Recommended visiting time: 5 – 2 hours

Exploring Jinli Street is one of the best things to do in Chengdu with kids, especially at night. The moment the red lanterns are lit up, the entire street seems to be changed by magic. It is a truly favorite of children as a night market and an amusement park.

The stone-paved road reflect the lanterns’ glow. The snacks at roadside stalls will make your mouth water. The old man at the sugar painting stall is busy drawing creatures with a spoon of syrup.

Nearby, a vendor has the child blow air into sugar figures on its own, and a cute animal puffs up from the child’s mouth. Is that amazing? But Jinli offers more than this. As you walk along, you may see artists perform the classical face-changing show.

  • Duration: 60 – 70 minutes
  • Suitable for: All ages
  • Where to Go: Jinjiang Theater, Liyuan Guild Hall, Gaiwan’er Liyuan Tea House, Sichuan Opera Troupe

If you don’t watch Sichuan Opera during your family trip to Chengdu, you’ll miss the most thrilling part.

The actor on the stage will change a series of facial masks. It is so skillful and fast that you can’t tell how does the actor manage to complete the process in the blink of your eyes.

Then it will take a deep breath and spit roaring flames from mouth. The audience cannot help applauding and cheering. I’m sure this will be an unforgettable night for you and your kids.

7. Huanglongxi Ancient Town

  • Location: Huanglong Avenue, Huanglongxi Town, Shuangliu District, Chengdu

  • Recommended visiting time: 3 – 5 hours

Huanglongxi is an ancient town with a history of over 1,700 years. The core tourist sites include the ancient street, three temples, old government office, and a breathtaking gallery bridge.

What attracts kids the most, however, is the shallow stream that runs through the town. The water is only ankle-deep, with a stone-paved path beneath the surface.

In summer, kids can happily walk in the water while parents sip tea on bamboo stools. This can explain why Huanglongxi is listed among the most family-friendly attractions in Chengdu for kids.
